Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 56 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by dkwins on 9/22/2023 & rated 90 points: I love Lewis cabs, so I can’t review too low, but aside from recognizing components of a well structured wine, this is noticeably past its prime and should be drunk now. Very muted fruit, much different than when enjoyed at what I believe is the typical Lewis sweet spot of 5-10 years. (243 views)
Tasted by phandel on 6/30/2020 & rated 92 points: Wonderful depth; seems to be just barely over the crest and on the way down, drink up! (1431 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 6/27/2020: PnP. Drank after a 2012 Morlet Estate which was much more complex and interesting. This is a classic easy going Lewis Napa. Only got one glass at the tail end of the evening so I'm not going to score. Holding up well with lots of life left. Fruit driven with lively finish. (1458 views)
Tasted by dkwins on 6/2/2019 & rated 92 points: I love Lewis Cab and this has the ruby color and is a rich wine, but not as jammy and lacking the same smooth finish. Good, not great. (1660 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 12/23/2018 & rated 94 points: great as usual, no real loss of fruit. (1838 views)
Tasted by dkwins on 5/11/2018 & rated 92 points: This would be more impressive if I wasn’t aware of how much better other vintages are in terms of richness and structure. It is dark in color, but subdued. (1947 views)
Tasted by dkwins on 2/20/2018 & rated 93 points: Classic, big fruit forward Lewis Cab. Very good, but not as complex and jammy as 2004, 2007 or 2008. Other years a bit longer finish and distinct blackberry, cherry notes. (1556 views)
Tasted by dkwins on 12/31/2017 & rated 93 points: Excellent, rich, jammy and very smooth. Strong, but pleasant grape jelly aroma. (1537 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 11/1/2017 & rated 94 points: The fruit was still really good. Very flavorful, yet the age in the bottle also softened it and brought out secondary flavors. It felt developed and very balanced. I was expecting the fruit to be really dialed down but no, and a pleasant surprise. I heard this year had smaller berries; could that have concentrated the wine? Lewis never lets me down and I don't know why i don't purchase more. Still has a few more years in in, maybe five tops. Recommended. (1785 views)
Tasted by dkwins on 10/20/2017 & rated 94 points: Rich smooth and still drinking very well (1330 views)
Tasted by franm on 8/21/2017 & rated 87 points: cheers - another huge CA cab that just doesn't cut it. too big, no subtle flavors; would rather drink a $20 rioja. (1235 views)
Tasted by Brix786 on 5/31/2016: Drank 5/30/16; good, can drink (2047 views)
Tasted by wine4lux on 8/12/2015: PNP with steaks, primary note is the length of the finish- wonderful flavor and textures lingered. (2273 views)
Tasted by Vailman on 7/25/2015 & rated 90 points: A year and a half later and I still have my reservations about this wine. Good fruit, smoke and prunes but missing something on the finish. What is that when the wine bites you on the back of your throat? Tannins? acidity? (2108 views)
Tasted by KendraPM on 7/5/2015 & rated 95 points: It smells like blackberry, prune, toast, blueberry, chocolate and espresso. (2112 views)
Tasted by benny on 10/11/2014 & rated 94 points: This is Lewis at the top. Classic CA cab notes without the over oak. Aged just right. (2551 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 5/11/2014 & rated 93 points: Delicious sweet cassis and black cherry flavors with well integrated oak and soft tannins. (2088 views)
Tasted by HBvino on 2/8/2014 & rated 92 points: Massive smoke and charcoal mid palate. Plenty of lush and ripened dark fruit. (1956 views)
Tasted by Vailman on 1/5/2014 & rated 88 points: This wine was disappointing, especially after spending $80. Vegetal, green pepper notes. The heat never blew off and masked what fruit this wine had to offer. Maybe the hour I gave it to open up wasn't enough or maybe I got a bad bottle. We'll see-I have three more left. (1906 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 6/6/2013 & rated 93 points: Lewis consistently makes a very decent cab. It doesn't have the taste of a trademark appellation (Stags Leap, rutherford, Pritchard Hill) but it doesn't need to because it is very good. It does everything right. Nice full bodied taste, no harsh edges or apparent alcohol either. Cork well made. I would drink this within 15 years of 2006. Recommended. (2397 views)
Tasted by Bobc7had on 6/1/2013 & rated 91 points: Everything in balance.
Had with a marinayed skirt steak.
Delicious. Deep and dark. (1932 views)
Tasted by Surfdoc on 3/10/2013 & rated 92 points: Rich, chewy, full-bodied cassis flavor slathered in toasted oak. Not my favorite style but a well made wine. (1866 views)
Tasted by George Lopez on 2/14/2013 & rated 94 points: Very enjoyable wine. My score may be inflated by 1-2 points because of the excellent food pairing (smoked lamb chops). Nevertheless, once this wine opened up (about 30 minutes), this wine really shone. Personally, I think this wine is drinking at its peak right now. I suppose it could cellar for a while longer, but I found the tannins relatively mild. Great black fruit on the nose with distinctive mocha and tobacco notes on the mid-palate, and a nice finish. (1905 views)
Tasted by RobertDwyer on 9/28/2012 & rated 94 points: Tremendous stuff here with depth, power, and grace that's incredibly hard to find south of $50. This wine rekindled my interest in the category. Off to find some wines that like this for $30. Wish me luck. (3058 views)
 Tasted by tp096255 on 2/1/2012 & rated 92 points: ---
COLOR: Deep purple-garnet with garnet-ruby rim
NOTE: Nice typical Lewis Cab with blackberry/mulberry jam, strawberry, cherry tobacco, tar and some cracked pepper. Mouth is rich with loads of ripe, sweet blackberry fruit, very hedonistic, with lots of mocha and 60% cocoa. Then the finish gets a bit ash-driven and has some green oak which knocks it down a couple notches. I don't know that this will improve with time.

2006 Lewis Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Winemaker: Brian Mox

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
