Community Tasting Notes (average 87.9 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 58 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jmoulder on 5/26/2014 & rated 88 points: a bit hot for my tastes, but still a good wine (3371 views)
Tasted by Discdoc on 5/11/2014 & rated 90 points: Supple and lithe now with broad palate, after inviting nose. Opens quickly. couple of years left in this one.
The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like tobacco. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. (3198 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 11/30/2012 & rated 91 points: I continue to like this wine...good QPR. Some barnyard on the nose, but excellent fruit and is developing some complexity with bottle age. (4144 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 12/2/2011 & rated 91 points: Nice CDR. Drinking well. Not a complex wine, but enjoyable and easy to drink. Good dark fruits. Balanced with nice depth. Meat, some tobacco. (5197 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 5/24/2011 & rated 90 points: Decanted half an hour. Deep crimson color. Aromas of lavender, red berries, rose petals and garrigue, with heavy, meaty overtones. Nicely balanced, with red fruit, white pepper, spice and meat flavors on the palate. Finishes nicely, picking up a minerally/iron quality. Drink now-2013. (5565 views)
Tasted by bcmatthias on 10/18/2010 & rated 86 points: Medium bodied. Needs food. (3789 views)
Tasted by Capt M on 8/12/2010 & rated 86 points: Solid wine, very well structured, full weight, good intensity of dark fruit flavors, plus relevant nuances of tobacco and black pepper towards the finish. Somewhat balance between fruit, flesh and structure, though it shows more structure than fruit. (3965 views)
Tasted by careyd on 6/7/2010 & rated 90 points: Thursday, June 18, 2009 - Tonight I'm tasting from a remaining half-bottle opened for over an hour and then vacu-vinned last night, to get a more 'open' impression of this wine.

Color: Dark purple, a little hazy (non-filtered). Nose: Really open now. roses, lots more cherries vanilla and cedarbox.. On the palate: Really nice. Smooth black cherry, blackberry, even a little blueberry., plush texture. The fruit, while abundant and fairly extracted, is not that typical bright new world in-your-face fruit, but rather has a little more of that muted old-world impression. In the midpalate I get bacon fat, gaminess, mulch, tobacco, black currant and blackberry. The finish has a little black pepper and spice and smooth round tannins. The palate is left quite dry with a little 'grip' of tannins and latent plums.

Sadly this is my last bottle of my half-case buy on this wine. Every bottle has improved over the age of this wine. I think it will continue to improve for another two or three years at it's current trajectory. (3625 views)
Tasted by Capt M on 5/12/2010 & rated 85 points: Found it slightly off dry and somewhat disjointed. I think this wine is not improving anymore. (3408 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 3/2/2010 & rated 88 points: nose: dark red fruits, dark cherries, some bits of spice and herbs with a touch of pepper

taste: real good medium/full feel with tones of dark red cherries, bits of spices, pepper, and dark red fruits

overall: Excellent feel with good medium acidity. Good body with excellent tones, this is real good and does ask for some food when drinking it (3079 views)
Tasted by pjgo123 on 2/27/2010 & rated 89 points: Nice medium bodied wine for the price. Better in comparison to a bottle drank in December, 2008. Benefits from aging (3520 views)
Tasted by caboychuck on 8/10/2009: Great nose, peanut butter, red berries, smoke or shoe polish. The wierd stuff blew off. Good fruit, nice acidity, a citrus element. Really, really good, 3 days later still terrific with a little licorice. (3933 views)

Compare/contrast with earlier notes I made on less 'open' states of the wine. Short version: It gets BETTER! (4291 views)
Tasted by cbuhlman on 6/9/2009 flawed bottle: 3 bottles, consistent notes.

heavy bretty, dirty aromas, but luscious fruit here. I'd love to try a clean bottle. (4228 views)
Tasted by cbuhlman on 6/9/2009 flawed bottle: heavy brett, smelled like a stadium urinal (4241 views)
Tasted by sarciero on 3/7/2009 & rated 91 points: A terrific wine especially for the price. Deep , dark, oh so smooth. Very nice nose. Plenty of fruit. Drinking very well, thank you. (3496 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 2/1/2009 & rated 86 points: Had this with a deep dish sausage & mushroom pizza from Malnatti's--went great. Nose initially somewhat juicy, but that blew off to give a slightly meaty, somewhat earthy nose that also had nice darker berries. Fruit forward but still slightly earthish when tasting, this gave a pretty nice finish as well with good acid and a firm structure--better structure & balance than I expect at this price. 86+. Drank this over about an hour, would have been curious to give it a decant & drink over more time. (4514 views)
Tasted by careyd on 1/31/2009 & rated 90 points: Tasting notes virtually identical to before (see careyd below) with the added note that I finished the bottle 2 days later and it had survived nicely in a vacu-vinned half-full bottle on the counter. The only changes to note are that the wine developed a more expressive nose, seemed slightly more alcoholic, and the finish/tannins were less tight, but also a little drier. Very nice though. I'm thinking a 1-2 hr decant of a new bottle would set this wine up 'just right', for where it is at today (Feb 09). (4570 views)
Tasted by SparkyL on 12/9/2008 & rated 91 points: Deep purple color. Nose of spice, dark berry fruit, pepper.
Taste - fruit forward, spice, leather, earth. Nice QPR. Good case buy. (3762 views)
Tasted by mclgreenville on 11/11/2008 & rated 90 points: WOW.
This is a fun wine. Fruit forward for a Rhone but still has hints of earthiness on nose and palette. The noise reminded me of wet leaves on a fall morning. Take a handful of craberries and mix w/ potting soil. That's the nose.
First impressions were fantastic. I tasted and smelled the clay and dustiness. Went perfect w. my NY Strip. Thank god I bought 6 of these.
Want to get more. This is a great wine and I'm happy about the price. Get it. (4793 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 11/9/2008 & rated 88 points: Dark, thick, inky and savory. Should have decanted. Old world aromas and flavors, new world body and texture. Nice offering. (4686 views)
Tasted by gbauer on 11/7/2008: Great at this price < $10. (3528 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 11/4/2008 & rated 88 points: Dark red in color. Unfiltered, and it shows, with a thick, pulpy mouthfeel. Good extraction and loaded with cherries, plums and vanilla. A good amount of tannins here. A nice, but somewhat generic wine. (4721 views)
Tasted by EricFromMD on 11/1/2008 & rated 88 points: Deep red color. Lots of sour cherry and cedar aromas. Big & tannic with lots of sour fruits. Nice medium finish. Quite good- paired well with paella (4634 views)
Tasted by Grape_ape on 10/23/2008: similar to previous notes (4801 views)

Les Vignerons d'Estézargues

Producer website
Les Vignerons d’Estézargues is a co-operative in the small town of Estézargues located to the south and west of Avignon. The co-op is truly unique in the wine world. All over France the co-ops still play a very important role in the production and sale of wine. They receive grapes from members and then make wine from them in large batches from many different vineyards blended together with the focus on producing wine in quantity rather than quality. Les Vignerons d’Estézargues takes a fundamentally different approach; starting in 1995 the ten different growers in this co-op began to vinify their wine separately and make single cuvées from their best plots. On the heels of the single cuvée project, Les Vignerons d’Estézargues began to practice natural winemaking – possibly one of the only co-ops in the world to do so. They use no cultured yeasts, no filtering, no fining and no enzymes during vinification or aging and only add a small amount of SO2 at bottling

2006 Les Vignerons d'Estézargues Côtes du Rhône Domaine d'Andézon

This tank-fermented blend of 90% Syrah (40-year old vines) and 10% Grenache (60-year old vines) exhibits gorgeous floral, blackberry, licorice, lavender, and roasted Provencal herb-like notes. In the mouth, it reveals flavors of sweet cherry and blackberry fruit in a silky, medium-bodied, pure, long style. This is an amazing bargain!

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
