Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 57 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by blanquito on 10/20/2015 & rated 88 points: This is good, better than expected. Fruity, spicy, some minerality, with plent of acidity. Blessedly, almost no new oak showing. On the simple end of things, but friendly and enjoyable with enough seriousness to keep it from heaviness. Ready now, should hold for a while though.

Update: I froze the leftovers for a few days and I am drinking the second half of the bottle tonight... whoa, the new oak has come on strong! It's very caramel'n'wood now, which merits a few point downgrade in my book. Not sure what this means, but I much preferred things on day 1. (465 views)
Tasted by Dexter Morgan on 8/9/2015 & rated 91 points: Swanky, high-toned, and ripe, this is just cruising along. Black raspberry and cherry bouquet, followed by earthy elements of pencil shavings, conifer, sassafras, and hints of black truffles and leather maturity. Tight and savory in the mouth, it's back loaded with a perfect balance of dark fruit and umami elements. Crushed rocks on the finish. (479 views)
Tasted by capacious on 7/14/2015 & rated 90 points: Drinking well now, mouth filling, nicely integrated, nothing wrong with it, just too much like the bulk of Napa. So that gripe aside, this is very good now, but I doubt it's got the structure to be there for us in the long term. That's ok, I need ten year old wines to drink at this point. (821 views)
Tasted by winemanintheden on 10/25/2014 & rated 89 points: Good solid 2005 Cali Cab Sav. Decanted for 30 min. Wine is nicely integrated now with slight tannins left. Can still easily age for a few more years without issues. Nose of medium dark red fruits with some oak and a short-medium finish. Good balance. Nothing spectacular or profound, but solid.  Tasted by miadelt on 9/5/2014 & rated 92 points: Very good Napa cab. Leans towards an old world style but still a napa cab. (1538 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 8/16/2014 & rated 91 points: Ready to drink. (1387 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 7/24/2014 & rated 92 points: Deep dark center, dark red rim with clear signs of age.
Sweet, cassis, plums, roasted cherries, black olives, crushed blackberries, a little creamy cheese.
Smooth, a little green olive and then brambles, a little sweet, toasty, intense black fruits, good acidity and tannin, integrated oak, fantastic length of toasty fruit.
Drinking very well now but has the backbone to last 5+ more years. (1370 views)
Tasted by brich on 3/3/2014 & rated 90 points: Very approachable and has aged well. It actually can go a little more timewise. Lovely palate and finish. Too bad you can't buy more! (1800 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/8/2013 & rated 93 points: Very dark red/purple color with a slightly lighter 2mm meniscus. PNP and drank 2+ glasses over 2.5hrs. I was thoroughly enthralled by this wine. Looking back at my note from 2 & 3/4 years ago this matches up perfectly. The nose has wonderful damp earth, lovely cassis and pure dark cherry notes along with tobacco, coffee, and dark chocolate. The palate has medium plus body and is nicely layered giving plenty of nuance to the core of cassis and cherry fruit. There is tobacco, subtle vanilla, and dark chocolate as well. The earthiness of the wine is so nicely balanced with the fruit, tannin, and oak here. Still can go another 5+ years. I only wish this wasn't my last bottle. 93+pts. (1681 views)
Tasted by miadelt on 8/22/2013 & rated 90 points: Good wine. Seemed to be in a dumb period as I was not getting much fruit. This may be even better in a few years. Drink next 2015. (1670 views)
Tasted by domco on 8/6/2013 flawed bottle: Bad bottle. Lots of sediment and some sort of 'slime' on the cork. Bricking around the edges, bret on the palate. Dumped. I hope an isolated bottle as have some '02's and another '05 in the cellar. (1554 views)
Tasted by TheBigD52 on 4/1/2013: Deep Purple. Plenty of fruit. Very smooth. Plum taste. (2009 views)
Tasted by nrickman on 3/22/2013 & rated 92 points: Deep, Dark Purple. Very smooth. Still with tons of fruit. Very nice by itself, with Popcorn or would be better with a nice piece of steak. (1633 views)
Tasted by nrickman on 2/9/2013 & rated 93 points: Lovely smooth wine. Still plenty of fruit and jammy. I thoroughly enjoyed this wine and could drink it everyday. (1538 views)
Tasted by Barry Notes on 1/14/2013 & rated 89 points: PnP w/15 min. decant. Pretty clear considering unfiltered. Extremely deep, dark purple color. Med Cab nose. Definately on the bigger side. "Old Napa" flavor profile. Some saddle, big tannins. Off traits blew off with more air time. Long finish. Should hold well for years yet. $39. (1677 views)
Tasted by graemeg on 10/8/2012: NobleRottersSydney - non-Oz cabernet (Alio's, Surry Hills): [cork, 15%] {DavidC} Dark ruby colour. Blueberry, liquorice, jam. Lifted, alcoholic nose. Explosive, really. Newton or neutron? Heavily macerated black fruit flavours, big but coarse tannins battle over the porty taste. Not much noticeable acid here. At the extreme end of the spectrum, so that will determine your reaction to. Within the style, it’s a very good example, and at 7 years, holding together better than many. (2074 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 9/9/2012 & rated 91 points: This improved immensely over three days. On day #1, it was tight and unbalanced. By day #3, it was full bodied with balance without being flabby or heavy. Really nice Napa cab. (1515 views)
Tasted by mdfuller on 8/2/2012 & rated 88 points: a very safe predictable CA cab ... drink and enjoy but do not expect your tongue to dance (1536 views)
Tasted by Rowchan on 7/9/2012 & rated 85 points: clear, purple with crimson rim, light tears. Clean, med intensity, aromas of blackcurrants, stewed plums, banana, and mushrooms. Dry, full-bodied, grainy (perhaps the unfiltered effect), med - acidity, med + alcohol (which contradicts the tears), med tannins, complex with hints of ash, licorice, bursting black berries, charred cedar, twigs, blueberries. This wine opens up amazingly in the glass but has a medium finish. A nice treat. (1571 views)
Tasted by cbkamp on 7/3/2012 & rated 90 points: Couldn't really take notes but I remember this being red fruit driven with some cassis and a ton of oak, but not in an off-putting way. Very soft tannins - I also remember thinking that this is probably ready to drink. (1474 views)
Tasted by TheBigD52 on 5/15/2012: Dark red color. Taste of dark red fruit and earth. finish is (1367 views)
Tasted by emf on 10/22/2011: Good, with dark red color and aromas of earth and dark red fruit. Lots of mineralness with tastes of dark red fruit and some black licorice. Wine changed with air and time and became smoother. (2035 views)
Tasted by zoeldar on 6/4/2011 & rated 92 points: Surprisingly excellent bottle here...took the nose awhile to open up...deep complex Napa cab, with layers of minerality I didn't expect. Definite edge of iron/ferrous in a very good way (complimentary). Maturing but plenty of time left. (2375 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 2/6/2011 & rated 92 points: Dark red purple color. Excellent nose of damp earth, cassis, black cherry, dust, and coffee. The palate is full bodied with layers of black fruits, cedar, coffee, and spice box and a velvety mouth feel. Tannins are round and integrated and accentuate the long finish. This bottle was aerated and decanted for about 30 minutes. Love that nice heavy sediment as well. 92+pts. (2673 views)
Tasted by emf on 8/13/2010: Lots of fruit on the nose and in the glass. Tasted like a Bordeaux with a fruity midpalate and integrated tannins. Lots of depth and complexity, good wine. (3029 views)

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in over 100 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"Napa Valley and virtually all of the North Coast of California (which obviously includes Sonoma and Mendocino Counties as well) has been on a qualitative tear since 2012. 2012 was a great vintage for nearly every varietal in North Coast California, but what is even more remarkable is that 2013 may turn out to be the finest vintage I have experienced in tasting North Coast varietals over the last 37 years. It's a game-changer in terms of the consistency of quality, the depth of quality, and the across-the-board excellence for so many wines." - Robert Parker
