Tasted by hrazdiiv on 5/6/2021 & rated 92 points: Like some of the other recent reviews, I too was worried that this was a bit over the hill but found that was absolutely not the case. The wine has a beautifully aged medium/light red brick color, showing both life and maturity at the same time. Nose is all secondary elements at this point: tobacco, cedar, with perhaps some dark fruits lurking in the background. Tannins, though clearly on the downslope, are still present, a very nice surprise that nicely elongated the finish. Elements of blue fruit, charcoal and cigar smoke round it out nicely. I'd say that it's approaching the end of it's ideal drinking window, but in fairness, some other drinkers thought that 5 years ago. Also worth noting that at current release prices (~$100) it offers relatively good value among California equivalent offerings. (1987 views)
Tasted by Timk257 on 1/5/2021 & rated 91 points: Rummaging through the gift bin and worried I’d let this go too long. Nope. A wine for grown-ups who prefer balance. Enjoy. (1954 views)
Tasted by Paul Lin on 7/26/2020 flawed bottle: Corked. (2087 views)
Tasted by Sir-Harrie on 6/5/2020 & rated 91 points: Bereits nach dem Öffnen sofort präsent. Tiefes dunkles Rot vereint Fruchtnoten von Heidelbeeren, Schwarzkirsche und Waldfrüchte. Leder, etwas Kaffee und schöne Erdaromen begleiten einen schönen Abgang. (2134 views)
Tasted by Roentgen Ray on 7/28/2019 & rated 93 points: Dark red purple in the glass.
Purple tinged.
Blueberry, raspberry, and acidity. (2719 views)
Tasted by SeattlePaul on 7/17/2019: A very pleasant can with good profile. Went very well with a steak. (1678 views)
Tasted by Ecoenophile on 12/22/2018 & rated 92 points: Well integrated... nice nose with cherry notes and rich blue fruits; palate was similar with a little leather and earthiness on the finish. Tannins were fine grained... a little "dusty". Overall very enjoyable. (2043 views)
Tasted by Nekodab on 9/16/2018 & rated 96 points: Drinking beautifully!!!! (2180 views)
Tasted by Mr.Overhill on 7/15/2018 & rated 95 points: This silky beauty is in a very good place right now, a wonderfully smooth and expressive vervet fog of a dar k cassis and milk chocolate covered cherries. Really beautiful oak integration, with a creamy and sweet cedar mid palate and such soft tannins. It's got some laser sharp focus right, and with a subtle acidity the finish is long and expressive. I think it has several good years ahead of it, but it's so nice right now I wouldn't wait to find out if it can. (2394 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 11/14/2017 & rated 93 points: So sad, my final bottle, and p'n'p at a restaurant. No real breathing time. A great wine, might even be worth another point... (2947 views)
Tasted by Pantera on 9/13/2017 & rated 95 points: We wanted to open a special bottle for our 3rd anniversary, so we went with a bottle purchased during our honeymoon. While visiting Shafer vineyards, the 2004 One Point Five was their cellar selection, purchased for $95. Once the cork was popped, the aromas were immediately evident. Let it breathe for 1 hour in a decanter. On the nose were notes of blue and black fruits, sandalwood, forest floor and an almost perfume like aroma. Flavors of blackberry, licorice, dark chocolate and earth with a finish that lasted 40 seconds. This wine took me back to our visit to Shafer vineyards and I cannot wait to go back. (3209 views)
Tasted by Hamersly on 6/6/2017 & rated 93 points: Ready to go after just a little air. Smooth and seamless, with lots of dark cherry throughout and rather more elegance than I expected. Tannins are fine and unobtrusive but still have plenty of grip. Delightful. (3327 views)
Tasted by Paul Lin on 5/18/2017 & rated 89 points: Decanted off its sediment an served immediately. Mouthwatering aromas of grilled meat, cassis, blueberry, dried tobacco, sage, and cedar. Smooth and polished on the palate, with resolved tannins and excellent acidity. The finish does peter out, however. Nonetheless, this a very nice wine to be enjoyed with a steak. Fully mature and ready to go; there's really no need to hold it any longer. (3340 views)
 Tasted by Nekodab on 12/4/2016 & rated 95 points: Temecula-ish (3834 views)
Tasted by Lax4 on 11/24/2016 & rated 92 points: What a great tasting wine that paired well with Thanksgiving. (3119 views)
Tasted by levinml on 9/28/2016 & rated 93 points: Worthy of the Shafer label and drinking well right now. Great flavor, balance and depth. Unclear why community has window ending this year. Good for a few more. (3161 views)
Tasted by swade on 7/17/2016 & rated 89 points: Blackberry aromas. Pruney, ripe flavors. Cashmere texture. This came across more porty than the 1985 Graham VP with which we finished. 89 (3297 views)
Tasted by DJSeiler on 4/14/2016 & rated 93 points: Still very amazing. Busted a cork, but, still a great wine. Opened up with an appealing aroma of blackberry. Well balanced with smooth tannins that are supported with the deep flavors of fresh cherry, blackberry and a hint spice. As a full-bodied wine. Other than the cork... Amazing wine! (3714 views)
Tasted by JoeDwine on 4/2/2016 & rated 93 points: Great bottle but a clear 2nd to 1994 Caymus S.S. really still big but was great with Steak. (742 views)

Tasted by WineWright on 9/3/2015 & rated 94 points: That kind of day. Just had to pull one out. Since our last bottle and my subsequent tasting note, the only differences with this offering were a perfect cork and fully integrated tannins. Absolutely Beautiful grape. (2708 views)

Shafer

Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
