Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 94.1 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 61 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by essenceofreal on 3/29/2024: This was a bit of an enigma.

Opening was big, clumsy, wave of heat from the alcohol and unbalanced. Decanted, an hour later smoothed out but not complex nor interesting. Had a very slight tinge of cardboard on the very back end. Seemed like it was past its prime by a while, not really drinkable. Nothing like previous bottles I've had.

After 3 hours in the decanter cardboard blew off, smoother, but still felt the flavor was lacking. Got better, a bit decent, yet still not even close to previous experiences. Saved half the bottle to try in the next day or two.

Regardless, could tell was a really nice wine at some point in its life, just that those years were long gone unfortunately. (90 views)
Tasted by vvWine.ch on 3/1/2024 & rated 90 points: (100% Marsanne, 13.5% Alkohol) Gereiftes Gelb. Trinken.  Tasted by Peech on 3/15/2023 & rated 86 points: very oxidized and overripe, lots of acetone and pineapple notes. (587 views)
Tasted by the player on 2/17/2023 & rated 96 points: Still an incredible experience even this being my 11th bottle in more than 10 years. Golden metallic amber yellow, decanted and aerated for 90 minutes then drank over two hours. No more gun flint on the nose but rather mature dark yellow fruits, honeycomb, apricots, some stone however no sweetness but rather plump and complex on the palate, pure power and can stand up to most reds. Finishes long and layered. A true marvel of a wine. The Château Latour of whites in my book. (738 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 1/13/2023 & rated 96 points: Wow! This is big and rich, in fact probably the biggest white wine I've ever had. Golden amber colour. Fully mature, honey, caramel, dried apricot and canned peaches. Long and complex. Drink now. I'm afraid I don't know how long it will last but the caramel tells me it is likely to decline from here.  Tasted by hkbob on 8/22/2022 & rated 98 points: Bright gold. Viscous with an oily texture. Very fresh with slate, honeysuckle, marzipan and tropical fruits on the nose. Incredible complexity, depth and length on the polished, impeccably balanced palate. Our only sin was not giving this 3 hours of air before we proceeded to finish the bottle. Remarkable quality and hedonism on offer. (1075 views)
Tasted by Chris Keller on 5/2/2022 & rated 96 points: Golden and deep in color with notes honey, flower petal, nuts, pineapple, pear, lemon, cucumber, vanilla, creme brûlée and burnt sugar along with a bit of a tea note very long huge thick and extracted with an acidity and minerality that is drying and keeps it from becoming dessert like. Spectacular!!! Drink now thru- 2055. (1337 views)
Tasted by Peech on 10/25/2021 & rated 90 points: a little ripe on the nose, and definitely ripe and alcoholic on the palate, but not too oxidized as I had feared. A little sweetness and some bitterness on the palate. Almost a little tropical. (209 views)
Tasted by yaCellar on 3/21/2021 & rated 92 points: Layers of nuttiness, orchard fruits, tropical fruits. Richly textured. A long, lingering finish of waxy richness. I had a bottle of this last summer and it was much fresher. (1832 views)
Tasted by shafer1994 on 3/5/2021 & rated 98 points: A nearly perfect white wine. After 18 years still a yellow Colour, a Bit golden. Incredibly fresh and complex nose, Deep, Needing air and Patience. Opulent, thick, superconcentrated, oily consistence with a Bit of Butter and vanilla plus Citrus, honey, Young pinapple, supercomplex. Completely mouth filling. Dominant. Powerfull, but also elegant. Really Full body. A wine to start philosophy. Amazing. Overwelming. (1698 views)
Tasted by yaCellar on 9/26/2020 & rated 96 points: Aged Marsanne is my jam. Alluring nose. Unctuous mouthfeel. Complexity in spades. Long finish. (1882 views)
Tasted by the player on 8/15/2020 & rated 96 points: Another favorite white. Decanted and aerated for two hours then drank over an hour. Deep golden color, very dense wine. Nose open of honeysuckle, beeswax, crushed stones, marzipan, lemon tart but make no mistake the wine has no sweetness and can pair with the juiciest piece of red meat. However we had it with creamy salmon truffle pasta and the wine’s buttery and long finish went well. Very powerful wine and very complex. A wine to follow over many years to come just to see its evolution is an experience in itself. The gun flint nose is gone as I’ve seen the last few years. Let’s see what happens in 3 to 5 years. (1844 views)
Tasted by Poisey on 7/30/2020 & rated 96 points: Decanted an hour then poured back in bottle. This wine is amazing. Oxidative notes. Dense and a massive body. Weighty on the pallet. Closed a little on the nose and needed time to open. Perfect balance and acidity. Fresh with one of the longer finishes I have encountered in a white. Goes for minutes literally. This will keep another 20 years I imagine. Drink 2025-2045. But who knows. Its a freaky good wine. (1727 views)
Tasted by the player on 5/6/2020 & rated 96 points: Outstanding and drinking well although has another 10 to 20 years of potential. Golden yellow color, viscous wine. Decanted and drank over 2 hours. See previous notes but the power combined with complexity and subtlety I have rarely seen in a white. (1445 views)
Tasted by Escalus on 4/27/2020 & rated 94 points: Golden, hints of raisin. Improved from prior tasting. Big and can cut through and compliment a fatty fish dish. (1358 views)
Tasted by the player on 4/17/2020 & rated 96 points: Amazing golden yellow color. Very evolved and viscous. Decanted and drank over 90 minutes. This wine pairs with every type of food you can think of. On the nose very buttery, honeysuckle, beeswax, pineapple and rocks but none of the gun flint aroma present when the wine was younger. Very powerful palate, amazing structure and complexity and a very long finish. Outstanding white at par with the best burgundies. (1201 views)
Tasted by the player on 4/3/2020 & rated 95 points: First time in almost two years. The wine has definitely evolved becoming more buttery and fat. Beautiful golden color and nose of honeysuckle, slight gun flint, pineapple and butterscotch. Fat on the palate, opulent fruits mid palate, powerful and amazingly balance although no sweetness. Very oxidative so had to place in decanter. (1206 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 2/15/2020 & rated 96 points: Similar to prior note; outstanding, drink or hold. It was a great brown bag wine; consensus was a younger, west coast roussanne (1462 views)
Tasted by Peech on 5/26/2019: acetone and beeswax notes. Only took a small pour. (103 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 3/11/2019 & rated 95 points: SO'd for an hour, creamy apricot & pineapple, long finish; delicious, drink or hold (1711 views)
Tasted by the player on 7/29/2018 & rated 95 points: Amazing complex white wine, very oxidative and powerful. Can match any dish and stand up to any powerful red wine. See previous note from 2015. Not much evolution, very slow to age. Tremendous structure, balance and length. (2011 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 1/11/2018 & rated 92 points: [Magnum] Big projection off of the nose, pineapple, apricot, smoky honey, beeswax, and lemon curd. Don’t know much about white Rhone wines, but this was stylistically different than Chave’s Hermitage Blanc in that although this has a viscous mouthfeel, it was not overly oily. Tight knit. Plenty of ripe tropical fruit. Actually quite delicious. (2581 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 11/24/2017 flawed bottle: Game dinner with friends: Corked (2809 views)
Tasted by Blake Brown on 6/2/2017 & rated 95 points: 2003 M. CHAPOUTIER DE L`OREE ERMITAGE [Marsanne]- fabulous, this had some petrol in the nose followed by pineapple notes being delivered in a creamy texture which thankfully prolonged the finish; it was in nice balance and although on the serious side, it had an elegance about it that stood out (2424 views)
Tasted by SWHighlander on 3/5/2017 & rated 95 points: This is a great wine. From a magnum format, this was golden in color. A bit of floral, citrus, mineral notes. Full bodied, dry, complex, beautifully balanced. Drinking well by itself and also with some hen. Long finish. (2995 views)

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Hermitage

Guide to Hermitage wine Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
