Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by DBdeParis on 10/27/2021: Absolutely excellent. A bit muted on the nose and palate at first but with aeration hit its stride. Would mark as ready to drink but no rush. Just love chenin when the nuttiness elements start to emerge. (583 views)
Tasted by arvidpalmqvist on 9/22/2021: Pleasant nose with hints of butter and nuts. Elevated acidity, citrus and yellow fruit, with hints of green, brine and grapefruit rind. (663 views)
Tasted by qtsam11 on 12/12/2020 & rated 93 points: Our experience with aged Savennières is maybe 2-3 bottles - we typically drink recent vintages - so my frame of reference is non-existent. We opened a 2016 of the regular Baumard, for uh, science. The cork came out beautifully, never would have guessed it was 20 years old. Poured a deep golden color, like a sauternes or a 10-year old scotch. The nose is rich in character, highlighted with apples and honey. The mouth is amazing. Slightly oxidative, baked apples and pears, apricots, nectarines and honey. Acidity is perfect, and the finish lasts for what seems like an eternity. Aged Savennières is definitely polarizing, with the Mrs. thinking it is way past. I think this is a fantastic wine and am happy I don't have to share! Compared to the 2016, it's hard to tell these are the same grape. I feel like this would pair really well with smoked trout, popcorn or french fries. (890 views)
Tasted by R Z on 2/23/2019 & rated 95 points: Exceptional Savennieres. Honeydew, faint floral notes, slight muskiness, light honey, ultra-long finish and a profound nose. I've often read that Savennieres was the rare white wine that improved with age, and this Baumard certainly proved it. I'd tried a bottle of the same wine 10 years back, and it had nowhere near the complexity, depth or flavor. Was a great match with authentic Indonesian rijstafel at Java restaurant in Park Slope, especially the vegetarian and seafood dishes. (1397 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 10/13/2015 & rated 91 points: Rich honey apricot colour.
Flinty apricot, honey, stone fruit and mineral spice.
Medium weight, excellent depth, bright acidity leaving a brilliantly crisp zinging finish.
Rich fleshy flavours of honey, peach, honeysuckle, orange rind, apricot, with a core of dry extract and mineral spice. Delicious drinking. (2770 views)
Tasted by f22nickell on 11/12/2014 & rated 91 points: Interesting wine. Deep gold color, some oxidized notes at first, then it freshened up quite a bit with air. Some honey, straw, and a funky earthy bass note. Sweet on the nose, dry and woolly on the palate. Nice long, crisp finish. (2666 views)
Tasted by olemski on 8/25/2014 & rated 93 points: Deep golden - almost amber. Sweeter on the nose than in the mouth, and it kept improving for as long as anyone had it in the glass. Wet wool, woodsap, a touch of honey, and in the mouth it had weight and autority but little charm. The aftertaste was slightly burning. However, it got more mellow with time and temperature. A singular wine. (2766 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 5/24/2014 & rated 90 points: Not many notes here other than marzipan aromas and good intensity. -and it was a great wine! (2719 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 11/13/2013 & rated 90 points: Golden yellow. Ripe, unctuous honey and floral notes on the nose. This smells sweet, but is bone dry on the palate. There is just a whiff of oxidized apple on the finish. Very interesting and contemplative wine. A ridiculous QPR at <$25 (2824 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 5/31/2013 & rated 93 points: Wonderful nose reminiscent of sweet botrytized Chenin, yet the wine was dry.
A plethora of intense aromas of wax, crushed apples, honey, quince, marzipan etc,
exploded from the glass. The wine although 13 years of age has not lost its vigour.
Palate has weight and strength but it lacks the focus and tight structure of Coulee de Serrant '06
with which we had it together, although it was far more expressive and aromatic. (1651 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 5/31/2013 & rated 93 points: Dark yellow-gold. Explosive and sweet nose with pronounced marzipan, honey, beeswax, candied quince and candied apricot. Obvious botrytis character, reminiscent of a sweet wine. Full-bodied and dense with amazing freshness of fruit given the age and balancing acidity. Persistent aftertaste. Surprisingly versatile in its pairings given the unique character. (2312 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 5/22/2013 & rated 92 points: Golden colour, glowing, amazing nose, prunes, honeyed stone fruit, waxy, still some lime/ grapefruit character on the palate, herbs as well. Different. Really very good, balanced and complex, great acidity and freshness, good length and persistence. (1444 views)
Tasted by BobJohnson1 on 10/31/2012: This bottle was over the hill. (1730 views)
Tasted by Biggsy on 10/18/2012 & rated 85 points: Very mineral heavy nose, stony and almost austere. A little hint of honey with time in the glass. Well defined and layered with waxy lemon peel, woody herbs and a nice grip keeping it tight together. Really good, but let-down by the heat on the finish that threw everything out of shape. A shame; maybe an odd bottle? (1497 views)
Tasted by vespasian on 9/11/2012 & rated 92 points: Golden colour; great intensity - aromas leap from the glass. Honeyed golden stone fruits, orange peel minerals; powerful orange pith palate with honeyed notes, really quite lovely at 12 yrs old. Good length too. (1492 views)
Tasted by Olderbhoy on 5/27/2012 & rated 85 points: Rixh deep yellow. Glowing! The nose is rich too, full and it gives the expectation of a sweet wine. The palate is full and rich but dry - lovely and long but i as expecting more than is in the glass. (1358 views)
Tasted by ghood on 4/8/2012 & rated 94 points: This is getting awesome. Haven't had a bottle in at least 2 years, but drinking it tonight it's obvious that its early promise is being fulfilled. The ripe apple, lemon fruit has given partial way to hints of beeswax, nuts, leaves, and wet wool. Very balanced right now. Drink now if you like the ripe fruit/funk combo, hold for many more years if you like the funk to sing loud. (1839 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 12/4/2011: Full, wax and wool, rounder than most Savennieres, good but better as it warms (though then goes just a little hot on finish). No signs of oxidation. B+ (1635 views)
Tasted by jmht on 8/1/2011 & rated 94 points: Consumed as part of a larger Baumard tasting (multiple Trie Speciale, Clos Papillon, Clos Ste Catherine and Quarts de Chaume vintages).

One of the best bottles of the lineup. It was everything Savennieres aspires to be... and yet, it was quietly fantastic, everything in its place, nothing pushing any envelopes, balance, balance, balance, and complexity. (1619 views)
Tasted by CerveloGuy on 6/25/2010: A huge savennieres, but nothing is out of place. This has lost much of its youthful fruitiness and is just starting to show its funky wolliness. Not for the faint of heart. I love it, but some people will hate how in your face it is. (1883 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/27/2010: Deep yellow. Fabulous nose of bright orange/tangerine and melon. Marvelously layered feel that recalls Grand Cru white Burgundy with zippy acidity, fruit as above, and the soil of Savennieres. Wonderful combination of perfect ripeness and no perceptible residual sugar. Fresh, alive, fantastic wine. (2095 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 5/21/2009: Ripe, rounded palate with flavors of Tree Top apple juice, bitter almond, spice, mineral. Just a hint of yogurt/lactic, perhaps partial ML? Medium bodied and concentrated, with that lovely Savennieres slightly grippy texture without heaviness. Better with a slight chill; at room temperature shows more of its warm vintage character, almost a touch flabby and alcohol much more aggressive. Overall a pretty good showing, with some positive development apparent but still room to grow. (2067 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/15/2009: Tulip/medium golden color. Almost indescribably complex nose. Some oxidative, nutty notes opened but then disappeared to reveal grapefruit, orange rind, and quince with an intriguing whiff of smokiness. This smelled progressively fresher and fruitier with time. Rich and amazingly glycerine, dry, and great, soil-infused finish. Prodigious wine with the palate impression of a Grand Cru white Burgundy. Fantastic stuff! (2136 views)
Tasted by br on 12/25/2006: a little clumsy and disjointed. bit of bitterness that may smooth out with some time. not the most elegant Savennieres, but lots going on and has a nice, long finish. (2599 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 12/21/2005 & rated 92 points: My notes read wooly, wooly, wooly. Bigger, rounder, and riper than most Savennieres I've drunk, but by no means fat or ungainly. Opens up a lot over the evening, put away for several more years. (2919 views)

Savennières

Savennières is a small, relatively well-known Loire Valley region producing wines made from the chenin blanc grape.

They are not conventionally fruity, and benefit from extensive aging.

Savennieres often have smells like white truffles and animal notes, even when young. They can last for a tremendous amount of time, and some people mistake the evolved aromas after 10-20 years with oxidization, but I have yet to taste an oxidised chenin blanc, since the amount and type of acidity (many g/l and tartaric) preserve the fruit in a much more effective way than e.g. chardonnay.
