Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 4/29/2015 & rated 83 points: Is there value in Sonoma Zinfandel (Chris H's home): I put this in as an extra bottle to have an aged Zin. There aren't many that age but Swan and Ridge are two that I have in the cellar. This did not show well, but I am not sure if it was the age or what. It was mine and the groups last place wine. Purple/ruby in color. The nose shows cherries and menthol but also a candied quality. On the palate, sour cherries and very tart. It is disjointed at this stage. Not sure what is going on here. Oh well, it happens. (1868 views)
Tasted by glaze3 on 10/8/2011: Enjoyable now but this may go forever. Red and black fruit on the palate with so much energy it just begs for food. Nice spice with a medium weight mouthfeel that shows the tangy and restrained side of Zinfandel. I will hold off on the next bottle for many years. (2466 views)
Tasted by Ben K. on 9/17/2011 & rated 91 points: Absolutely delicious restrained zin. Spicy, good full taste. Wish I had more. (2536 views)
Tasted by sethomps on 7/29/2011 & rated 90 points: Great acidity. Nice balance, and rich, juicy fruit without being one dimensional. (2557 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 5/12/2011: 14.2% alcohol. Classic Swan Zinfandel profile. A lovely, cherry-laden nose with spice and minerals. In the mouth, lively and focused, with great verve to the palate. This has opened up beautifully over the past two years. A delicious, food-friendly Zin with a red-black fruit profile, spice, tangy acidity, and a long finish. It has taken some time to come around, which makes me think of the 1999 Mancini, which continues to drink well. This has a happy future ahead. A- (2847 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 4/19/2011 & rated 89 points: Joseph Swan/Rod Berglund Tasting at Byerlys (Byerlys Wine Shop, Golden Valley, MN): Nose: Loamy aromas with dark fruits. Palate: Great acid levels with very subtle dark fruits in the background. Even though this is a 6 1/2 year old Zin it could use more cellar time to integrate further. (2632 views)
Tasted by SuitePhoto on 3/18/2011: Old School. Not really recognizable as Zinfandel if you are looking for big jammy fruit and 16% alcohol. Floral nose with cigar wrappers and red fruits - a touch of spice emerges with air. A middleweight in the mouth - more red fruits with a strong thread of acidity all the way through the spicy, 30 second finish. Some wood toast and a faint green streak round things out. Not a blockbuster, not over the top. Just a really nice drink on Friday night that disappears much faster than expected. (1998 views)
Tasted by Brady D on 1/18/2010 & rated 88 points: A nice zin. not too dark, a slightly rusted red. started off with a strong nose of menthol and brambly spice. Tight upon opening, it opened up over the course of the night. spicy, dark fruit. medium bodied, average finish length. very nice.

This is a mid-style zin, halfway between a monster Turley or a claret-like Ridge. (1925 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 7/21/2009: 14.2% alcohol. Beautiful, aromatic Zin. Filled with spicy black fruit with a red edge to it, bright acidity, and a long finish. Pure delight to drink, if a tad simplistic at this stage. B+ (1817 views)
Tasted by garambler on 7/18/2009 & rated 89 points: My brother-in-law and I tasted this at the winery on 7/18/09. It had aromas and flavors of blackberry, plum and spice. I thought it was fairly unremarkable. (1731 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 12/6/2008: 14.2% alcohol. This is classic Swan Zinfandel. Rich red color. Has the aromatic sensibility of a Pinot, with dusty cherry aromas, spice, and strong minerality. In the mouth, this betrays its youth. Somewhat shut down, but plenty of that lighter styled Zinfandel fruit. Lots of acidity. Long finish that is clamped down by some tannins. The entire wine seems tight, like it's wearing a straitjacket right now. B+ (1803 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
