Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 146 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by shafer1994 on 7/26/2023 & rated 93 points: Ripe, Cabernet based wine. Dark color. Dark fruit, black currant, black cherries, some chocolate, pepper. Harmonious and well balanced. Medium to long finish with still some acidity. Might keep for 2-3 more years. (461 views)
Tasted by Darkman on 7/29/2022 & rated 92 points: The wine is still in a fantastic shape - the nose is pronounced, with flavors of bell pepper, black fruit, cedar and vintage leather. What a great wine to try with 16 years of age (977 views)
Tasted by sbbulldog on 6/19/2022: Fathers day selection. For my tastes, I loved it, Rate? 93. At first it could have been almost any grape. With air, the lineage became more clear. Very nice blend, Bothe power and fruit. (1037 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 3/13/2022 & rated 92 points: Drinking superbly and at peak - drink or hold but leaning heavily on the drink, even though this does have likely 2-3 years left before degradation kicks in I see no upside to further cellaring. 6 more bottles left and will be knocking one off every 2-3 months. Subtle, beautiful, medium - full bodied, dark purple, balanced and with a medium length aftertaste. Nose of more red then dark fruit, floral with violet notes and garrigue. Flavor profile of more cedar then oak, dark cherry, cassis and then leather and grilled meat. Definitely recommend with the caveat that these need to be drunk up shortly. CanNOT believe that this is anyone's 2nd label wine. (1097 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 11/7/2021 & rated 93 points: Nice if not profound, with a lovely warm satisfying finish. Black and red fruits, cedar, touch of leather, spice and pepper, with a touch of menthol. Medium length finish with some complexity. Drink now and over the next 10 years. (1412 views)
Tasted by hargy on 1/1/2021 & rated 90 points: quite a gentle wine now with fruit slowly starting to fade - I would be inclined to drink this soonish (1665 views)
Tasted by awever on 10/11/2020 & rated 93 points: Perfectly matured, Jörg Müller, Sylt Oktober 2020 (1532 views)
Tasted by Gr8penut on 9/20/2020 & rated 88 points: light bodied for my palate (1511 views)
Tasted by hargy on 5/5/2019 & rated 91 points: lovely drinking wine - no rush (2239 views)
(2413 views)
Tasted by ctjared on 10/20/2018: nice blend (1966 views)
Tasted by maxima on 6/3/2018 flawed bottle: Bouchonnée! (2729 views)
Tasted by jseal@hotmail.com on 6/3/2018 & rated 89 points: slightly orange rim deep obscure red, slightly sour cherry smell. Napa valley. Bordeaux blend style, very good. (1831 views)
Tasted by Marcyrillo on 2/5/2017 & rated 90 points: Very ripe in the beginning, but became more classic and rounded after 1/2 hours. Better in the second day. (4007 views)
Tasted by CranBurgundy on 1/9/2017 & rated 94 points: This wine has class. It's certainly not a fruit bomb - it's a well executed & subtle Cab dominated blend that hits all the right notes. Very tame nose, and a well balanced palate consisting of dark fruit, light white pepper notes, cocoa powder, mild tannins that aren't astringent on the finish, and a very faint hint of leather & tobacco. It was soooooo easy to drink! Decanted for 45 minutes, then poured back into the bottle for the 1/2 hour trip to the restaurant. About a thimble full of coffee ground sized sediment was left in the decanter. It was singing within a minute or two of hitting the glass. (3969 views)
Tasted by Domfrenette on 9/24/2016 & rated 90 points: Solide. Équilibre parfait... c'est très bon! Longueur moyenne. (4401 views)
Longueur moyenne. (4352 views)
Tasted by HOS on 3/27/2016 & rated 93 points: Opened 1/2 hour prior to pouring. Dark fruits and earth in a full bodied, well integrated wine. Drinking great b (4634 views)
Tasted by Uncle John on 12/22/2015 & rated 91 points: Cork broke so filtered into a decanter. The wine continued to open over the next two hours. Nice dark fruit with low acidity and smooth tannins. A blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. An excellent mid priced Cali cab blend with a little bit of Bordeaux influence. This went great with prime rib roast. (3009 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 12/8/2015 & rated 86 points: Drank at Bob Bob Ricards
Nose of dark fruit and tobacco. Light palate. (2906 views)
Tasted by ProfByron on 7/27/2015 & rated 92 points: Less concentration than the 2005, but also more freshness of fruit. Ripe fruit sweetness although refreshingly dry claret, and instantly attractive. A fine wine that is awfully hard not to like.

Napa and great value - who would have thought!

Drinking well now. Will it change with further age, I suspect not a great deal, but worth seeing. Will it live for another decade - yes probably, or more.

14%ABV sealed with cork. (2999 views)
Tasted by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on 4/14/2015 & rated 91 points: Decanted for one hour before drinking. In a much better place now than when I last drank it one year ago. (3389 views)
Tasted by eporres on 3/8/2015 & rated 90 points: As the proprietor says, it's a great BBQ wine! Leathery and dark. (2431 views)
Tasted by BCharlieG on 2/26/2015 & rated 94 points: Little confused by the lower ratings of this wine out there - this wine is brilliant. Flint, cool, delicate and round - drinking perfectly right now for this vintage. Absolutely delicious wine and well balanced and composed. Hints of toasted cherry, raspberry, vanilla, hints of oak and cedar. Rounding notes of soft mint and cool cassis. Gorgeous. (2883 views)

(Napanook) #1; COLOR-dark; NOSE-really pretty; very candied to me (purple gummy bears); hint of bell pepper on the back-end; really dark candied fruit; sweetness coming through on the back-en; PALATE-some black olive which I really like; a very chewy wine; quite approachable for being so young; velvety smooth; exuberant bright California fruit, but has good finesse and structure; a black tea earth component; I like this; I love the way this wine finishes; finishes very old world; Bordeaux lovers looking for a little California sunshine would love this; at the price this is very attractive; will easily last 7-12 years; a really good effort that is better than many more expensive Napa wines; RP-92; GV-90+  90+ points

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Napanook Red

The Napanook Red Wine was first created in 1996. It is a 'second wine' to the main Dominus Estate wine. Confusingly, some mid-90's vintages of the Dominus Estate (1991 through 1996 we believe) were labeled as Napanook Vineyard, so people often try to create older vintages of this wine. None should exist before 1996.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
