Tasted by vvWine.ch on 3/1/2024 & rated 88 points: Gereiftes Rubin. (119 views)
Tasted by C9dP4ever on 3/11/2023 & rated 96 points: Excellent CdP.
Decanted and aired for 2+ hours. Kept the nose and the taste for the entire consumption over 1 1/2 hours. Powerful nose, taste lasted for over 90 seconds.
All the Cdp traits are there, simply a wonderful wine. (701 views)
Tasted by bugdoced on 2/24/2023 & rated 92 points: getting better with age
2nd and 3rd day with more integration and length
A new fan of grenache! (665 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 2/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Decanted from magnum and kept decanter standing on ice to serve a bit cooler than I usually would for a red. Big wine for sure but I did not get any heat or overripeness. At the same time while the nose was fairy aromatic with plenty of dark fruit, smoked and earthy notes, the palate was very smooth with plenty of licquorice but in my eyes not particularly aromatic or deep. Perhaps the trade off when serving a bit cooler. Any way, a very well made C9dP in the vintage context but not a truly great wine in my eyes. (825 views)
Tasted by JHSP on 12/29/2021 & rated 93 points: Very dense, balanced and silky wine , madeira port wine, dried plums, smoky bacon, dried sweet red fruits - long finish - with 15% too heavy for my liking - lacks therefore a bit elegance - however a special wine which improved over the 2nd in the btl! Next one in 5 yrs+ (1616 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 8/6/2020 & rated 94 points: CDP redemption night at Maison Dakota. Tasted blind. Drank in Grassl 1855.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour with wide garnet rim. Long legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of meat, smoke, dark spice, garrigue, earth, dark red cherries, black cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (16%!), velvety smooth high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of herbal menthol, dark red cherries, black cherries, black licorice, sweet kirsch and caramel, smoke. Long finish.
Very good quality. Big and powerful but with sufficient supporting acidity to give it enough lift. Will continue to develop well over the next 3-4 years. No need for extended ageing beyond. (2779 views)
Tasted by pigdaddy on 6/26/2020 & rated 92 points: decanted one hour+. it is an interesting paradox to find a wine such as this, well-constructed & fully representative of the best technique & winemaking, throughout the process. but I no longer love wines like this, as special as it is in terms of capturing the vintage & reflecting the house's approach to winemaking. the alcohol shows, it's not brutal but notably present; the grenache fruit is very sweet, strawberry, cherry, clean yet almost candied; tannins fully resolved, lots of depth, tho soft & low acid on the finish. many folks will love this, no longer in that group. so why 92? arbitrary scoring to reflect the well-made process; just not my style so much these days. it was good w/dinner.

Tasted by k H i L o on 12/2/2019 & rated 93 points: Il est à son apogée ! Ce vin chante comme dans un opéra de Verdi ! (2702 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 11/10/2019 & rated 98 points: Singing! Medium rusty red; expressive nose, plum in madeira, caramel and strawberry; elegant, sweet, well-balanced, rounded body; has it all going for it, better CdP might be hard to find (?); 2007 was a great year in CdP - they are all drinking really well right now (2609 views)
Tasted by UFGators on 3/7/2019 & rated 94 points: No denying the quality of this wine. It has concentration without weight. Loads of strawberry jam. 2007 was the ideal CDP vintage and this wine benefited from that. I have never had a bad wine from chapoutier. This wine is a little jammy for my taste and this was enchanbced by not being aged in oak. Still a great wine at a great value. (2640 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 1/27/2019 & rated 98 points: 2007 is an astonishing wine and my bottle was at a fantastic stage to drink full of fruit.
Color is a clear and limpid medium-ruby towards garnet.
Nose has an amazing clarity of fruit - no brett here - cherry, strawberry, smoke and the proverbial provencal herbs.
Full bodied and soft on the palate, with amazing depth of flavour and lingering finish.
Can age much further but right now it's just perfect. (2231 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 10/16/2018 & rated 97 points: Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #032: Wines with 98+ points: Very ripe fruits dark berries in the bouquet, truffle, autumn forest, red berries, laurel, garrigue and sweet spices. On the palate ripe juice as well, laurel, chocolate, toast, a lot of sweetness and also good acidity and tannin. Beautiful and complex wine with still a good future. 96 - 97 (2664 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 3/30/2018 & rated 97 points: A wonderful wine which shows the greatness of the 2007 vintage while ageing beautifully. Tonight the 2007 Barbe Rac delivers the most profound dark mature fruits, classy morellos and sweet liquorice one could ever dream of. This is a stunning nose! Secondary tones of spice and garrigue emerges as after about ten minutes in the glass. The palate is elegantly integrated and totally balanced. Actually the definition of balanced wine could be this one. There is no oak at all which pushes the fruit forward in the overall impression. All other components in the wine make up a velvety and silky background to the symphony of fruit. Colour is even more brick red compared to previous tastings - age is moving forward... A true pleasure tonight and an absolutely lovey wine! (2760 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 9/23/2017 & rated 96 points: Once more fantastic showing. The bottle I had in 2013 must have been badly stored because today this wine showed incredible freshness.
Expressive nose with red and dark berry fruit - strawberry, cherry - with just a hint of lactic and a tiny barnyard note. Some notes of vanilla cream as well.
On the palate medium + to full bodied with lots of glycerin but also some acidity to keep it in check. Sweet with purity of fruit, velvety texture and rather high alcohol which I did not mind.
Superb wine!

Tasted by Neras on 9/16/2017 & rated 95 points: Very pleasant and balanced. No component stands out - everything seems to be in the right place. (2714 views)
Tasted by ChopperWine on 7/29/2017 & rated 92 points: I must admit that this was a little disappointing. Thinner than I expected.
Not as chewy or rich as I like from these older CDP's but I did find that the wine had aromas of dark berries, slight leather, licorice and spice. Tannins still present in a more youthful way. Flavors of dark fruit and prune. (2939 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 5/5/2017 & rated 97 points: A true masterpiece, hitting its perfect drinking window. The nose exhibits the most profound dark mature fruits, classy morellos and sweet liquorice. Secondary tones of spice and perhaps a whiff of garrigue are starting to emerge. The palate is totally integrated and so balanced a line dancer would find it enjoyable. There is no oak at al and this helps move the fruit forward. All other components are just a silky background to the fruit symphony. Actually there is not hard edge to this effort. Certainly this is the most velvety and silky wine experience I have enjoyed in many years. Colour is brick red at the rim telling me no one is immune to ageing. A true joy and a totally lovey wine! (3404 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 6/25/2016 & rated 96 points: A lovely example of Grenache and a stunning example of the 2007 vintage. The wine is open from first pour, but continues to develop in the glass for at least an hour or more. The nose reveals abundant and profound dark mature fruits, morellos and sweet liquorice. The palate is totally integrated. With a total absence from oak, the fruit is certainly in the front seat here. All other components, e.g. Acidity and tannins are close to perfectly integrated. Actually there is not hard edge to this effort at all. It is like drinking silk. Colour is getting slightly brick red at the rim, telling me ageing is a fact also for this wine. A true pleasure to drink tonight. This wine certainly is a true joy to drink!

Last but not least a few words on how the 2007s are progressing. This wine has behaved very similar throughout the years. The incredible silkiness makes it a bit difficult to tell about further ageing. Still my sincere guesstimate is this wine should be drunk not in a too distant future, still it is just lovely so why wait? (4003 views)
Tasted by Motz on 11/22/2015 & rated 94 points: Drank over three days. Huge wine! Came away with the same impression as 18 months ago. There is a lot to this wine and some of it may be over-the-top. The label states 16 abv and, unsurprisingly, Port-like heat is ever present. There is nothing subtle or reserved to this enigmatic yet delicious offering. No where near peak; drink through 2025. (3923 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 12/5/2014 & rated 95 points: Much different than last bottle I had a year ago.
This is much younger and less evolved, even color is ruby rather than garnet.. Wine is not better though, this bottle seems to need time, especially on the palate...
Nose is very open and expressive with notes of cherry liqueur, leather, grilled meat and violets. On the palate it is full bodied but extemely soft with astonishing purity of fruit, also liquer like and a tad sweeter than I would have liked. Soft tannins, low acidity and clean and long cherry-like finish.
A great wine. (4806 views)
Tasted by JulianSkeels on 11/10/2014 & rated 94 points: Not yet ready, for my taste but showing amazing potential. Rich but not as dense yet as expected. 100% Grenache and it shows in the amazing nose of sweet cherry. Lots of current kirsch alcohol notes in the mouth currently dominate the sweetness, some vanilla and tonnes of spice. Decanting for 2hrs helped, but still felt that there is more integration to come. With more age I expect this to become denser and very much on the Burgandian end of the CNDP spectrum. Lots of upside, am leaving rest of case until 2020. (4450 views)
Tasted by pigdaddy on 6/22/2014 & rated 93 points: double-decanted, followed over 3 hours. garnet red, violet paling at rim; terrific kirsch-dominated nose, w/baked cherries, warm stones & wild herb florals; rich & ripe, intense cherry liqueur, roasted red berries, very mineral & loads of dry extract, alcohol shows on the long, long finish. first of six, seems to be in mid-career, but no experience w/this particular bottle's evolutionary track.

grilled rosemary & coriander seed-marinated quail, ladypeas w/gold beets & snap beans, oxheart tomato marmalade (4552 views)
Tasted by Motz on 5/7/2014 & rated 94 points: Beyond racy, the 2007 Barbe Rac is at very least flamboyant, and perhaps borders on the hedonistic. Opulent and remarkably spicy bouquet that features the finest qualities of Rhone Grenache, cherry and blackberry compote...even berry liqueurs, pine resign, mint, peppers, cedar chips, and a strong hit of alcohol. The palate shows all these elements, great minerality, a bracing well-structured mouthfeel, and a long finish of excellent grip and noticeable alcohol.

I recently tasted the 2010 Saint Damien Les Souteyrades (Gigondas) and would suggest these two wines share a few comparable markers. Where the Barbe Rac features unbridled opulence, the Les Souteyrades shows focus. In my opinion the Barbe Rac is marginally more concentrated and the Les Souteyrades marginally more rounded. Both wines are also marked by high alcohol that may or may not integrate.

This Barbe Rac may age gracefully for seven to ten years or may remain a flashy and sexy wine. I really enjoyed the experience and am glad to have another bottle to try in the future. 94-95. (4101 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 5/3/2014 & rated 94 points: Muted and a bit restrained, the 2007 Barbe Rac is on its way of loosing its baby fat, i.e. the primary fruit seems to be fading. There is nothing wrong with that, but right now this wine is neither "mature" nor "young and fresh". There is plenty of dark fruit left, exhibited quite nicely alongside the tones of sun warm sand stone and the lovely Grenache kirsch. The palate is perfectly integrated and reveals the master craftsmanship behind this effort. It is simply adorable and proof that Chateauneufs can also be elegant and refined. The overall impression is very positive, but I am also curious on how this effort will continue to evolve. (3567 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 11/13/2013 & rated 97 points: Absolutely gorgeous wine!
Medium garnet colored looks older than expected.
Nose is also mature - the wine has lost its initial freshness and purity of cherry fruit and a melange of kirsch liqueur, strawberry jam, violets, undergrouth, herbs and spices, has taken its place. Nose is ethereal. I would not call it typical CdP at all, it's more like a cross between a mature Burgundy and a mature Hermitage or Cote Rotie. Quite full bodied with high alcohol and just medium acidity it is still immensely quaffable. Surprisingly evolved I hope it does not die soon... (3107 views)

M. Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac

Barbe Rac
Selection Parcellaire / Single Vineyard
Biodynamically grown certified

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red "Barbe Rac"
10 acres, 100% Grenache

This vineyard is littered with the famous "galets" or pudding stones characteristic of the area, but in reality the subsoil is far more important - quaternary terrace, with a complex and varied mixture of red clay and ferruginous sand. The vines are the oldest Châteauneuf-du-Pape vines in existence (about 90 years old age). This unique hilltop vineyard West of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape makes some of the silkiest and most elegant wines in the region. Its biodynamic culture ensures the low yields (15-20 hl/ha) necessary to create a pure and intense Grenache-only wine. Late picking develops exotic aromas in this very well-built and long flavoured wine.

Grape variety
Grenache. 90 year old vines

Soil
Quaternacy terrace with a surface of shingles coming from the former bed of Rhône. The plot producing this single vineyard has a complex and various geological composition.

Harvesting
The grapes are carefully selected during the harvest. This sorting is compulsory and allows the selection of the best brunches of grapes.

Vinification
In vats made of concrete covered with epoxy resin as Grenache is sensitive to oxidation. The grapes are 100% destemmed, fermentation lasts about 3 weeks at a temperature which varies from 30 to 33° C. Only the free-run juice is used in this single vineyard.

Maturing
Ageing in vats for 14 to 16 months. Then 6 months ageing in bottle.

Tasting

Colour : Intensive garnet

Nose : Herbacy, spices (liquorice), chocolate, fruits (strawberry)

Palate : Ample, fleshy, hot and round. Outstanding density with an impressive length.

Ageing potential: +25 years

Matching food
All kind of meat. Large game. Stew

Closure
Cork

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
