Tasted by melvinyeowq on 5/3/2023 & rated 89 points: S$100-$150 open theme: So dark in colour with high alcohol and extracted fruit. My first instinct was a 2005 right-bank but once it was revealed to be a non-Bordeaux, it was obvious that this was a Oz Shiraz from the same period. Couldn’t have been a new-world Cab with the lack of greenness, and plummy notes - the slate of new-worlds tasted last Saturday helped me out here. Not my style but drinkable. (1596 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 9/5/2022 & rated 92 points: Even though I assumed it would be DOA, I took it to a Labor Day party hosted by a guy who loves Aussie Shiraz. As usual, I was wrong. It was more vibrant and alive than a bottle I opened a year ago. Prominent American oak, but plenty of blueberries and interesting secondary notes and flavors. Quite rich, with a terrific finish. Still great and still has some life left in it. (1076 views)
Tasted by ShirazTrain on 9/3/2022 & rated 95 points: Wine making that goes into a command.
120+ yr (Planted in 1894) old vines on its own root stock,.
This is a great example of the old Barossa vine fruit smashed with oak
and holding its own.
(on the last glass with airing)
Dark fruit, coffee, surprising red fruit,
liquorice, blackberry on the palate,
long dark berry finish,
outstanding command but needs 3+ yrs to be fully appreciated

Tasted by joeroth on 2/10/2022 & rated 93 points: I know Penfold’s and other iconic wineries in Australia are considered possibly better. And there are many good ones. But Elderton still is my go to. 16 years and drinking beautifully (1408 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 11/14/2021 & rated 89 points: Definitely past its best, partially oxidised. Leather alongside damson, blackberry and mulberry. This would have been an extracted fruit forward wine but almost certainly lacking the acidity and possibly the tannin to carry the fruit long term. Long and quite complex. Drink up. (1584 views)
Tasted by graemeg on 11/3/2021: NobleRottersSydney - Barossa Old Vine (Fix, St James, Sydney): {cork, 14.5%} [DavidM] Plenty of leather and old American oak. Chocolate, vanilla and old carpet too. A real generation away from the previous reds, despite just the few year’s difference in age. Its hefty, mature palate is neither fresh nor especially complex in its aged leathery, decaying fruit flavour way. It’s medium-full in weight, with medium/high dusty, oak-driven tannins and low/medium acidity. Surprisingly for shiraz, it seemed to only exist on the mid-palate, with little presence at the front of the tongue at all, and just a medium length finish. Ready to drink and not worth cellaring longer. There was some conjecture as to whether this technically met the ‘old vine’ criteria, but it was probably close enough. The back label admitted to 32 months in oak. Wow. Another wine that would have benefited from earlier picking I think. (1183 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 9/4/2021 & rated 92 points: Took to a party, so no detailed notes. Extremely dark and opaque, with no signs of age. No noticeable varietal characteristics. Extremely silky and rich. Tannins faded, but still there. Absolutely bodacious finish. Past its peak, but probably has several years left. (1040 views)
Tasted by stayhappy21 on 7/17/2021 & rated 88 points: Opened this wine and drank it with a group of drinking enthusiasts at a wine mate's place. The theme of the evening: Aussie Shiraz from 2006.

Purple in colour with ripened dark fruits and some fading dark chocolate, cigar and cherry notes. Wine does not integrate as well as compared to previous bottles from the same vintage; could be due to bottle variation or the vintage is going downhill.

Nevertheless, a good wine that can be a good pair for a good steak or chop. (1257 views)
Tasted by RobertLA on 8/17/2020 & rated 94 points: Beautiful full bodied well rounded Shiraz. Drinking at its peak. Still has possibly another year on it but not much longer. Definitely a winner (1880 views)
Tasted by Inny on 6/20/2020 & rated 93 points: Beaut deep rich fruit in this solid Shiraz.
Lovely integrated timber, well balanced.
This example drinking beautifully, but with plenty of life left in it. (1761 views)
Tasted by SSGibson on 1/1/2020 & rated 92 points: Deep ruby and not showing much age on the edges. Nose of dark fruit, cigar box, and a hint of strawberry. Very smooth, balanced and well integrated, with loads of sophisticated fruit and not much tannin. This bottle was stored well, but it is probably a good thing that it is my last one. (2257 views)
Tasted by nic.fcn on 10/26/2019 & rated 92 points: Wow. My last bottle. This has aged so well. Nose was woody. Smell like Swedish sauna wood. Taste took just 30 minutes to open. Fantastic. Drink now! (2315 views)
Tasted by bethel31 on 10/26/2019 & rated 89 points: Spicy nose and a bit strong alcohol coming through. Medium tannins and dryness and needs more time to air. Sweetness came through in the second day with a bit tobacco. Not too complex and not sure I enjoyed it. (2092 views)
Tasted by gesusser on 10/6/2019 & rated 93 points: Smooth as silk after 1+ hour decant...excellent with grilled
Lamb chops ..in its drinking window (1458 views)
Tasted by BBinSC on 8/24/2019 & rated 91 points: 90-91: on the decline for sure, but this bottle was not stored in my fridge, so I'm expecting a well-stored bottle will be much better. It still has the cedary notes, and there is plenty of blue fruit. Tannins and acid are about fully resolved, the wine has a lingering finish. It's good, but past peak. (1443 views)
Tasted by gesusser on 6/23/2019 & rated 93 points: 2 years later still great after a 2 hour decant... (1254 views)
Tasted by Al-Vino on 5/5/2019 & rated 88 points: Past the drinking window. Going downhill fast. (1254 views)
Tasted by rhapsody5435 on 3/5/2019 & rated 90 points: open and sweet. drink for about 2 hours and it fall (1359 views)
Tasted by ddingley on 12/6/2018 & rated 90 points: A bit disappointing for the price and pedigree, but a pretty good wine. Completely unlike the 2004 I drank two years ago, this was more restrained and had some savory and even cranberry qualities in lieu of the over the top fruit and vanilla of the earlier version (I wasn't wild about that style either). (1746 views)
Tasted by nic.fcn on 8/19/2018 & rated 90 points: Very fragrant. Opens pretty fast (2266 views)
Tasted by Drinking Trees on 7/13/2018: Nose shows big notes of red fruit, anise, and caramel. Palate is big, broad, and mouth-filling, but not intense. Broad, smooth tannins, bright acidity, and massive fruit flavours of cherry, raspberry, blackberry, rancio, caramel, and smoke. Finishes with moderate but persistent acid and tannin. I was blown away by the 'bigness' of this wine: it's opulent, yet balanced. By far my favourite wine of the night. (2537 views)
Tasted by hebill on 4/22/2018 & rated 90 points: Reasonably well made. A bit too much jammy fruit and oak on the front and doesn't develop much complexity on the end. Elegant but lacking in structure to make it great. Great BBQ wine. (2613 views)
Tasted by Psdycp on 3/25/2018 & rated 92 points: Warm and spicy nose of black pepper and licorice with blue berries, violet and toasted cloves. A touch more minerals, smoked olives on the palate which is silky smooth on a full-bodied mid-palate. Nice acidity and very fine tannins provide the structure for the fruit. Hints of sage round off the finish. Less fruit forward and intense than the 2005 Command Shiraz. Personality of a cooler climate Shiraz. Friends of Barossa Shiraz will wish for sweeter and more intense blue fruits. At its peak now, will likely last for another 5 years.

Retasted in Oct 2020, nose remained unchanged. Palate is fresh and less intense compared to 2010 and 2007 vintage. This is also not as silky as the 2005, 2007 and 2010 vintage. (2624 views)
Tasted by nic.fcn on 2/18/2018 & rated 90 points: Not as complex as the 2007 but still quite a good drink. Drank with little airing but I reckon it could open more with 2 hours in a carafe. (2360 views)
Tasted by Al-Vino on 11/16/2017 & rated 91 points: Big, chewy Aussie with a touch of Marsala on the finish...or would have rated it higher. One hour decant was plenty. In the middle of its drinking window IMHO. (2735 views)

Elderton Wines is a small, family owned and operated winery, situated in Nuriootpa, in the heart of the Barossa Valley.

Elderton was the name given to a vineyard that was first planted on the banks of the North Para River in Nuriootpa in 1894 by early German settlers, the Scholz family. In 1916, it was purchased by Samuel Elderton Tolley who built himself a sprawling homestead on the Estate and sold the fruit to his family’s winery. It was run successfully for many years, but became derelict in the early years of the vine pull (circa 1975).

“If you buy the house, I will give you the surrounding 72 acres of old vines for nothing”. This was the proposal offered to Lorraine and Neil Ashmead in 1979. The rambling old homestead looked ideal for a growing family and the Ashmead’s worked tirelessly to salvage and restore a phenomenal treasure of a vineyard. In 1982 the first wine was made under the Elderton Label. Tough times prevailed, but ultimately the vision of the founders shone through and Elderton is today celebrated as a major reason for the rejuvenation of the Barossa.

In 1993, Elderton shot to Australian national prominence after winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy. International success ensued, including the World’s Best Shiraz Trophy at the 2000 London International Wine & Spirits Competition. Media accolades have also been extensive, including: five star winery rating from James Halliday in his 2016 Wine Companion book (as well as the six previous editions); wines named in Matthew Jukes Top 100 Best Wines in Australia in 2014, 2011 and 2009; and being named in the Top 100 Wineries in the World, Wine & Spirits Magazine 2005.

The wines of the Elderton Nuriootpa vineyard are enjoyed globally for their richness, vibrancy and uniqueness. They are celebrated for being traditional examples of the best of the Barossa.

The second generation took the reins of the business in 2003. Brothers Cameron and Allister believe very strongly in continuing the traditions that began a generation earlier, on the Nuriootpa vineyard. Wanting to take the family company to the next level, they together devised a plan to buy great vineyards in other significant sub appellations of the Barossa.

Through using sustainable practices, the hope is that the next generation of the Ashmead family have a lot to work with when they are at the helm. In 2007 a great little vineyard in the Eden Valley was purchased and this was followed in 2010 by the purchase of a vineyard on the northeast corner of Greenock. The intention of making wines from these exceptional vineyard sites is to celebrate the differing terroirs of the Barossa and showcase the absolute best that the Barossa has to offer.

Single Vineyard

The wine takes its name from a single vineyard owned by the Scholz family, in the northern area of the Barossa Valley. This single vineyard Shiraz is a great example of vibrant Barossa fruit. Dense dark fruits and a hint of chocolate. An exercise in opulence.

Elegance and fineness wines, sourced from a single vineyard, planted to develop a specific variety.

The vineyard surrounding the 1905 built Ebenezer church in Barossa's north are defined by a distinct bright red clay soil. The Scholz vineyard has a remarkable lack of variation across this block. This area of the Barossa is renowned for its richly flavoured Shiraz with intense and luscious middle palate flavours. The wine from the Scholz Estate vineyard is an excellent example of this.
