Community Tasting Notes (average 87.6 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 59 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by pbaek on 12/19/2020: Still going strong, this is now on darker fruit, is more nuanced but still shows great purity and balance. Authentic wine, by no means over the hill, but maybe more charming at age 10-12. (797 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 8/26/2018 & rated 90 points: Celebrating Judi's Birthday (Sun Wah): Courtesy of Kevin, this punched well above its weight tonight. Lovely spice and brambly red fruit aromas. The palate shows nice depth, with dark fruit, sage, pepper and red currant flavors. Finishes with good length. (1302 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 10/27/2017: At 11 years old this is still a young wine that shows the restrained, light red-fruited side of Grenache with notes of raspberry and cherry fruit and subtle tannins that are yet to be fully resolved. Great purity of fruit as usual, marks of earth. Pure Grenache in a glass. (1433 views)
88 pts (2384 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 4/15/2015: PopnPour, tasted over 2 hrs
-mostly opaque vibrant dark red with slight bricking
-moderately expressive perfumed melange of faint but sweet black fruit kirsch and mature elements
-med acidity, med weight with impressive depth on somewhat simple mid-palate comprised of some black fruit and bitter soil tones, rather abundant chalky tannins
-mature CdR drinking well now, don't anticipate positive development despite some residual tannic structure (2803 views)
Tasted by humagne on 11/20/2014 & rated 89 points: Still in excellent shape. Red fruit and earthy notes, good balance. (2607 views)
Tasted by TheGrizz on 5/4/2014 & rated 87 points: While it is past the consensus drink by date still showing well. A little lean when first opened, dried fruit and slight smokey ness came out with time. Silky smooth and very approachable. (2698 views)
(2948 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/31/2013 & rated 88 points: For a basic Cotes du Rhone this is a very ok wine. (See also previous note.) Pleasant garrigue in both the nose and the mouth. Good acidity and tannin with a soft bite. Really nice and certainly for the price. Ready now and no real hurry. Drink ultimately in 2014 or 2015. (1629 views)
Tasted by humagne on 1/4/2013 & rated 90 points: Gorgeous fruit and some smoky notes. Balanced. The alcohol level of 14.5% is not apparent. Well made wine. (2200 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 9/8/2012 & rated 87 points: Drank this bottle over 3 days and kept open at room temperature. And even on day 3 it is still ok, which is amazing. In the bouquet good cherries and some garrigue. On the palate lovely acidity, juicy fruits, white pepper, herbs and other spices. The tannin is soft, but still offers a nice bite. Kept in a good cellar this will still be nice around 2015. (2439 views)
88+ pts (2518 views)
88 pts (2451 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 2/17/2012: More serious, upright, restrained and tannic than usual for a 6-year old Charvin but nevertheless utterly impressive and delicious. There is no overt Grenachy cherry fruit here, not at all. This wine is all about pretty red fruit, spices and white pepper. Subtlety and structure are key words. Wait with this one, wait 3 years for the tannins to settle down. And buy 2004 and 2006, they really are outstanding vintages in the south. (2209 views)
Tasted by theusualsuspect on 5/25/2011 & rated 90 points: After a disappointing Charvin 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape a week ago, this was a stunner.Very much CDP quality. Dark fruits, some spice, powerful extract, and unusual length for a Cote du Rhone. Drinking nicely but absolutely no rush required. Wanted the 2005 - wasn't avaiable so bought this. If I've ever had a better Cotes du Rhone, I can't recall when. That said, I buy Cote du Rhone as a value based on its fresh fruitiness. This wine is well above that picture. (2740 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 5/14/2011: A great vintage for Charvin's Cotes du Rhone and much better than the 2007. As usual for Charvin, the fruit is pure and clear with a very obvious mineral mark. Good structure and balance here. Lovely. (2554 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 4/15/2011 & rated 88 points: Tasted the 07 and 06 side by side. Both were dark fruit, garrigue and white pepper. Not a whole lot of complexity or subtley but a really nice wine with a good qpr. The 07 was softer and more accessible. The 06 firmer and had a significantly more tannic finish, but both were equally enjoyable. (2562 views)
Tasted by rayq on 12/26/2010: Good juicy fruit.
Pure cherry fruit aroma. Some glycerin but Lively acidity. Good example of top quality cdr.
No hurry to drink up (3300 views)
Tasted by Nohedes on 12/21/2010 & rated 88 points: Bright still young CdR, berries, leather, touch of camphor on the nose. Rich red fruit palate, dried cranberry, earthy. Medium finish, good CdR coming into the sweet spot. (3023 views)
Tasted by khmark7 on 12/21/2010 & rated 88 points: I get lots of dark fruits and leather on the nose with a good spicy palate and lingering finish. Classic for the vintage and ready to drink. (88-89) (3100 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 11/29/2010 & rated 91 points: This drinks above it's appelation status. Red fruited, expansive in mouth, lovely balance and lacey texture. Really enjoy this! (3263 views)
Tasted by BYOB on 8/8/2010 & rated 89 points: Nice recommendation from Jwobbk. Ripe strawberry and cherry notes, with a subtle pepper finish. Looking to buy a few more. (3690 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 7/26/2010 & rated 91 points: Loved it! Ripe but not over the top. Great fruit and class. Beautiful stuff! (3742 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 7/23/2010 & rated 89 points: Medium ruby core with watery rim. Nose is brambly fruit, blackcurrant and berry with earth notes, herbal. Taste is blackberry and currants with firm integrated tannins with balanced acidity. A food wine and serious for Cote du Rhone. (751 views)
Tasted by wilmette vino on 3/31/2010 & rated 86 points: spicy fruit with garrique notes, ready to drink, and moderate length. Good bottle for the Cotes du Rhone appellation and needs a rich meat or spicy dish to match up with. (4025 views)

(LE POUTET Charvin CdR) Charvin #2 Dear Friends, I've been compiling my notes from the Great Producers Tasting but it's slow going to get the pertinent details down on each wine - it's become almost a mini-newsletter (reminds me of the old Recent Impressions newsletter from 5-6 years ago that I used to pen) - hopefully I will finish it this weekend. So far, lots of interesting stories and information so it should be an interesting read (not to mention dozens of tasting notes). It will also include my notes on the Mugnier Musigny vertical from a few weeks ago plus various Cote Roties (La Mouline, Belle Helene, etc). Now to the Rhone... I've been following this wine with curiosity over the past year and its finally begun to realize the potential that lurked behind closed doors. What was once a one of the more expensive Cotes du Rhone disappointments of the vintage has turned a corner with weight and richness notably absent the last time I tried it (Thanksgiving 2008). I can now recommend the wine as a full-toned example of the Southern Rhone and a verifiable value from one of Chateauneuf-du-Pape's most respected producers. Normally priced closer to $20 or more, this wine won't change your world but it will certainly satisfy your desire for old-world Grenache on a Monday night come this October or November... ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this price with impeccable provenance: 2006 Charvin Cotes du Rhone "Le Poutet" Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone6712

OWNERS & HISTORY:
The Domaine Charvin was founded by Guillaume Charvin in 1851. 16 years later, in 1867, the entire planting area was destroyed by vine fretters. But William Charvin and other members of the family didn’t let this get them down, and replanted the soil. At this time, the family name also changed from Charavin to Charvin – due to an administrative error. The winery is situated in the northwestern part of the region next to Château Maucoil.

The family began its work with four hectares of land in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The first bottling at the winery – intended only for private consumption – took place in 1951. During the following years, most of the wine was sold to dealers. In 1990, with Laurent Charvin, the sixth generation took over the family business. During his first year, he produced some 8,000 bottles of wine. The remainder was still sold to local dealers. Since 1990, the amount of wine produced has increased each year. At the moment, the winery has 8.2 hectares of land in three different lieux-dits: Maucoil, l’Arnesque, and Cabrières, all in the northwestern part of the region. The soil there consists mainly of limestone and loam, and is more or less covered with stones. The average age of the grapevines is 45 years. Laurent Charvin loves to philosophize about nature, adjusting himself to whatever happens outside: to the weather, the soil, and the grapevines. He explains:

“I’m not sure whether the quality of the wines increases with passion; the potentials of the soil and of the grapevines are more important. You have to comprehend what you have. Besides, you should never try to copy your neighbors, because each parcel has unique material with its own DNA.”

GEOGRAPHY & VARIETALS:
Only a single red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced; it consists of 85% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Vaccarèse. The wine is made in a very traditional manner. No stems are removed; after sorting, the grapes are lightly pounded and then poured into fermentation tanks made of concrete. The wine is recirculated daily during alcoholic fermentation and maceration, which last around three weeks. Laurent is no friend of excessive extraction of the wine, but rather aims at more balance, freshness, and structure in the wine. Experimentally, and always striving to maintain optimum freshness, Laurent uses concrete tanks exclusively during the ripening process lasting eighteen months. All of the wine is bottled without interruption and without filtering, in order to avoid even the slightest differences from one bottle to the next. Annual production amounts to around 30,000 bottles.

"It would be no problem for me to make two cuvées: a powerful one and a light one. But I am convinced that only a mixture of the two will make a wine the way a wine should be, and the way I like it!"
- Laurent Charvin

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
