Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Vinacull on 4/18/2011 & rated 85 points: P&P, color as previously noted, no sign of bricking. Bouquet smells of dark fruit mildly oxidized, leather and meaty notes that were not apparent when last tasted a couple years ago. On the palate the fruit tastes baked and somewhat oxidized, along with leather and some earthiness. Strangely, the acid is medium-plus despite obvious signs of age, with spikes of brightness on the sides of the tongue in tart cherry flavors in the finish. Moderate tannins are fully integrated. This was well-cellared, but has not held up well in that the fruit has lost its vibrancy and it is considerably less elegant now. If you have any, drink up, and quickly. (2295 views)
Tasted by ecola on 2/3/2011 & rated 90 points: Aromas of leather, tobacco, and red berries on the nose. Medium to full body with cherry juice flavors and moderate tannins on the finish. Very easy to drink and really enjoyable. Well balanced. ($13) (2285 views)
Tasted by amateurwino on 11/20/2009 & rated 88 points: I'm not 100% sure if I tasted the 04 or the 05... anyway, this was what you might expect from a minervois - some garrigue, some floral, some spice on the nose - the palate was pretty user-friendly, rounded off by a good dash of oak. A shade too much for me, but this will be accessible even to those new to Languedoc wines. (2570 views)
Tasted by pete s. on 8/24/2009 & rated 90 points: This wine is delicious. Loads of dark fruit and chocolate on the nose. Intense red fruit and plum flavors on the palate with a nice mocha finish. Also a nice smoky, oak element that I enjoyed. Smooth and balanced with no rough edges. Definitely a crowd pleaser. 90+ (2684 views)
Tasted by RDHudak on 8/10/2009 & rated 92 points: Color: Beautiful dark Nose: Alcohol, some wood and beautiful red raspberry, cherry, plumb, etc..Taste: Definite black cherry with some sour cherry, raspberry again and lighter flavors of spice and herbs. Nice acidity with a hint of earthiness. Very well balanced with a medium-fuller body. Finish: Very pleasant and reasonably complex flavors that seem to last quite a while, especially the sour cherry finish which has seemed to soften somewhat since I last tasted this. Seemed to get even better as it was opened a bit. This is an outstanding value at $13.00. Easily worth double that. (2806 views)
Tasted by Vinacull on 7/29/2009 & rated 90 points: This was even better than the last time we had it, so I have bumped it a point. Respi-Aerate to decanter and consumed over two nights. Dark cherry red color that is nicely concentrated. Both in the nose and mouth this is strongly perfumed with potpourri of flowers, cherries, red currants, and earth. Elegant smooth mouthfeel, acid that is stronger on the back end, and noticeable but accessible tannins all around. A surprisingly long finish of nearly thirty seconds that has a distinct resinous tart cherry flavor. On night 2 many of the same fine qualities with the fruit darker and only faintly oxidized, and more earthiness present. Every time I drink it I am reminded of how much I enjoy this wine, and now wish I had bought more. Really over-delivers at a price point of 13. (1276 views)
Tasted by JJKinch on 7/25/2009 & rated 86 points: A little disjionted the first night - too much oak, but with some good fruit and some earth. Better the second night, more integrated. Good for the price. (1362 views)
Tasted by RDHudak on 5/18/2009 & rated 92 points: Nice color. Nose: Huge with scents of plumb, red raspberry, black and red cherry and oak. Taste: Very full flavors of various red and dark fruits with excellent acidity.A slight sour cherry note in the finish would be my only dislike. Nice complexity to the medium body and a long finish. We drank this $13.00 purchase along side $40.00-$70.00 wines and the group agreed it held its own. Several members picked it as a favorite and no one knew the wine or its price upon tasting. All were shocked at the price point. I have opened this at several parties and it is always a favorite. Wish I bought more than a case when it was available. Purchased at Winelibrary.com last summer.  Tasted by D H Grant on 3/21/2009: Will reserve scoring it at this time and will say that I probably should taste this again. I have seen and heard a lot of praise for this wine but really, in a way it did not impress me first time out. Les Sept Vents has some nice things going for it. The initial hit of the bouquet is fragrant, full and suggestive with red current, pomegranate and notes of garrigue. The palate I found to be somewhat one dimensional, even a little hollow on the mid and without the complexity that the nose suggests. This did not change even after a day or so. This syrah blend is intriguing and I want to give it another try for sure. (1443 views)
Tasted by pete s. on 2/22/2009 & rated 90 points: Aromas of plum, spice, vanilla, and cocoa on the nose. Medium bodied with nice fruit in the mouth and more vanilla. Creamy finish with lingering chocolate notes. Medium tannins. Not over the top fruit but would not have guessed old world. Great QPR for $13. (1560 views)
Tasted by Vinacull on 2/7/2009 & rated 89 points: {ST} P&P. Color dark cherry red, medium body with inkiness that clings to the glass, clear. Lovely perfumed nose of cherries, currant, some earth and oak, all of which transfer to palate but the oak is in check. Tart cherry resin, smoke, and a little chocolate in the finish of about 20 sec. Medium-plus acid, mild level of firm tannins, fairly well balanced. As noted before this is an excellent candidate to serve to someone who has been turned off by heavy OTT Aussie shiraz. Drink over the next 2-4 yrs. Excellent value at 13. (1485 views)
Tasted by CLDWLL on 8/31/2008 & rated 88 points: Excellent QPR from the Minervois. 100% Syrah. A nose of black fruit (blackberry & plum), currant, bay leaf and pepper. Medium-bodied. A little one dimensional (primary) on the palate. Oak accents. Solid finish. A tad modern for my palate but for $13 bucks there is plenty to think about. 88 points on night one. 89 points on night 2.  Tasted by TLHWG on 7/20/2008 & rated 90 points: This was a Wine LIbrary 4th of July free shipper. Just popped this 15 minutes ago....

Nose: fresh white capped mushrooms, dark strawberry and raw chestnut.

Taste: bright, fresh sour fruit, slight elements of fresh hay, mushroom, etc. This is different (but not bad): the aftertaste left in my mouth resembles that of a red apple.

Medium to light red, e.g., bigger than pinot noir but smaller than the other common reds, e.g., merlot, etc. And well-balanced.

I can't believe this is a syrah. It bears no resemblance to, e.g., popular Aussie syrahs.

Day 2: this wine has really opened up well and is showing a fuller bouquet. On the palate, its bigger than yesterday, still balanced but its tannins are showing better/better integrated with the rest of the wine. All of the flavors described are still present but are better integrated with one another. Pepper (black, white, who knows) has definitely made its appearance on this second day as typical of syrahs.

As of day 2, I would recommend.

Score: 89-91. (1775 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.
