Community Tasting Notes (average 92.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 306 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Eantnay on 12/17/2023 & rated 94 points: 3 hr decant; served with braised Mediterranean brisket. Dark purple, with herbal notes on the nose. Full bodied, yet soft on the tongue, with a velvety mouthfeel. Tannin still showing a slight bit of grip. Excellent pairing with the brisket. Got better as the meal progressed. Perhaps will be even better in another a year or two. (595 views)
Tasted by Rond on 7/28/2023 & rated 95 points: Dark purple, with just a bit of brown beginning to show. Notes of dark cherry, cedar, and licorice. Very long finish. Really nice. (1087 views)
Tasted by Hazeo on 6/26/2023 & rated 94 points: This is drinking wonderfully and firing on all cylinders, still has the dark inky fruit but the fruitiness has toned down a lot since the note from over 10 years ago. The mineralogy and elegancy is still there, and as another taster noted the tannins are still noticeable but they melt in your mouth and don't distract. Wonderful! Wish I had another to share with dad. (1181 views)
Tasted by LARich on 2/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Bottle said 2008. Still wonderful (1681 views)
Tasted by Rond on 1/29/2023 & rated 94 points: Notes of anise and juicy blackberry. Very nice, but fruit is fading. Drink up. (1672 views)
Tasted by LeVin66 on 12/29/2022 & rated 93 points: This was beautiful tonight. (1461 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 12/24/2022 & rated 93 points: PnP. Some bricking. Plenty of mocha and blue fruits but also loads of blackberry; a distinctive minerality and touch of menthol. Tannins are still thick with some coarseness that took the wine down a point for me and I doubt they will fully resolve before fruit fades. Drink up. (1094 views)
Tasted by Jeff Jacob on 10/6/2022: This was so beautiful tonight. Balanced yet nuanced. Smooth and full. Lovely.I think it is at a great drinking window (1333 views)
Tasted by Joelene on 9/5/2022 & rated 93 points: Big beautiful wine. Stony minerality, nice earthy notes, good acidity, big structure, long drying finish. Licorice and spice, some green pepper and mushrooms. Really nice wine, still seems young. Likely just entering the beginning of prime drinking window I’d think. (1028 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 8/27/2022 & rated 94 points: One of my personal favorite “Super Tuscans”; I’ve enjoyed five vintages dating back to 2004 with a cellar holding three yet untouched vintages. Heavenly, complex aromatics of dried flowers, intoxicating perfume, red currant, dried tobacco, green herbal tea, old shoe leather, cocoa powder, and dusty earth. Flavor profile yields much the same with dried red berries, cooked plums, stewed raspberries, crunchy herbs, taut leather, old tobacco, and chunky, dried red dirt. Definite signs of bricking with the deep, muddy ruby core being surrounded with a clear meniscus. Mature fruits, mellow tannin, and integrated acidity all in harmony. Paired with a grilled Tuscan pork loin, cheesy riced cauliflower and broccoli…perfect! Still shows some power on the finish, enhancing the food. Last of three bottles purchased back in 2009…a definite reason why cellaring high quality wines yield enjoyment many years later! Drink now, but can safely cellar, and drink well for another 3-5 years. Outstanding. (983 views)
Tasted by SteelerFan on 7/19/2022 & rated 92 points: Needs a decant and a some air, but very good once it opens up. Smooth with good fruit and mild tannins. Beginning of drinking window. (1041 views)
Tasted by PB wino on 7/13/2022 & rated 93 points: Has become tertiary, prunes and plum. Still balanced acid. Muted fine tannins.
Drink up and enjoy (983 views)
Tasted by Mark van Delft on 4/30/2022 & rated 94 points: One of my favorite Super Tuscans: bramble, plum, prune, espresso, tobacco, blackberry, blackcurrant, medium plus body, great long finish - 94. Wining with Bas en Bo. (1232 views)
Tasted by LARich on 4/10/2022 & rated 94 points: Wow! Drink now (1207 views)
Tasted by tedcholl on 4/9/2022 & rated 92 points: A recent wine auction purchase. Rated #15 in the 2008 Wine Spectator Top 100. Some conflicting info on the blend, I believe this is 50% Sangiovese, 25% each of CS and Merlot. Powerful and intense, tannins still very present, long finish. blackberry, tobacco, leather, plum, tar. (1198 views)
Tasted by Rond on 1/17/2022 & rated 95 points: Wow! Notes of dark cherry, plum and smokey meat. Great complexity and balance. Still has plenty of life. (1551 views)
Tasted by jsebiri on 12/26/2021: Broken cork , so required some surgery. Very nice juice , nice backbone, the nose was a bit subdued , very well done across the board. (1603 views)
Tasted by MS86 on 10/28/2021 & rated 93 points: Blended with 50% Sangiovese. Very intense deep ruby in the glass. Youthful.
Powerful, young, oak dominant nose. New leather, chocolate, menthol, tobacco. Background suggestions of black cherry and blueberry.
Tannins are wonderful, very fine, if still firm and powerful. Well-balanced powerful and persistent acidity. Warm finish.
Flavours show more fruit than the nose. Black cherry and blueberry pie. New leather and mint.
Exceptionally long finish.
Needs a couple of years and will last for at least a decade. (1666 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 10/5/2021 & rated 96 points: Italian Wine Scholar Class at the Texas Wine School. 40% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Sangiovese. Deep, opaque ruby. M+ dried Damascus rose, ripe black fruit, red fruit, dried herbs, tobacco and mocha from 18 mos., in French Oak. Dry, with M+ acidity, M+, silky tannins and high alcohol (14.5%). Full-bodied, with M+ to pronounced flavor intensity and length. A delicious, complex, big yet well-balanced Super Tuscan from Eastern Tuscany, it is drinking better now than 11 and 3 yrs ago. Probably has quite a few years left. WS 96. (1651 views)
(1873 views)
Tasted by gesusser on 7/24/2021 & rated 93 points: One plus hour decant..execellent with veal parmigiana and filet medallions in wine reduction and mushrooms (1942 views)
Tasted by BillyRayValentine on 4/17/2021 & rated 95 points: Agree with note by SFWinelover1. Excellent wine. Paired well with skirt steak. (1898 views)
Tasted by sfwinelover1 on 3/6/2021 & rated 94 points: One off ($90) in the large private purchase last fall. On the nose and palate, blackberry paste, smoke, tobacco, cedar, anise and graphite with a powerful mocha note on the end. Dark purple with a slight brown tinge, medium body and legs. Medium++ acidity and tannins (with the drying quality per usual in these parts), both fairly well-integrated out of the bottle (tasting notes generally consistent after 90 minutes of air and over 3 nights), no heat. Impressive persistence, intensity and intensity. I've always been fond of this bottling, but paid a a bit more than I ordinarily would have to finalize a large purchase last fall. This wine is my favorite kind of Super Tuscan--a word which has become practically meaningless to mean most red wines made in Tuscany, from 100% declassified sangios, to sangio-Bordeaux blends to straight Bordeaux blends to syrahs--a blend of sangio with Bordeaux varietals, which has, alas, become rare (Oreno started phasing sangio out shortly hereafter before stopping completely, as did LMPG). While I find sangio gives this wine, and many of the better Toscana blends which include it, a lovely raciness, fully intact 15 years later, that also comes from the deft, light touch of the local winemakers and the wonderful terroir, which can make full Bordeaux blends seem more like a BdM than a Napa cab, IMO. While this bottling's persistence and intensity are impressive vintage in and vintage out, what I like most is its raciness, an almost ethereal quality, which makes the wine quite good as both a standalone and a complement, particularly rich red meat. In this week and a half of outstanding cabs and Bordeaux blends, this doesn't have quite the power of its Napa kin, but like the Blankiet which preceded it, largely makes up for that in my eyes with subtlety, balance and elegance, and if the fruit isn't as vibrant, the wonderful savory and saline notes are excellent compensation. Great drinking window which should have 5+ years left, maybe a good bit more. While I've never done a blind tasting, I feel confident that I could pick out the STs from their brethren in the wine-producing world. Recommended, and at the $60 I paid for the '15 and $112 I paid for a mag of the '16, a real qpr winner, even if, alas, the sangio is no more. Hoping with all I've got that both the world and I will be in better places in '22 and I can visit my favorite winemakers in Bolgheri, Maremma, and bestill my heart, Montalcino. 93-94 (2645 views)
Tasted by burlingtonm on 2/26/2021 & rated 92 points: My WOTN in a tasting of disappointing Super Tuscans. This stood out as having good energy, ripe fruit and concentration, notes of leather and cassis and drinking well at this point in time. (1968 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 1/20/2021 & rated 93 points: Ripe, sweet fruit and great concentration of flavors.Well together and structures. Perfumed with full body mouthfeel. ENORMOUS amount of sediment, make sure that bottle is not disturbed during opening! Decant one hour to room temperature. (2054 views)

Tenuta Sette Ponti

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Tenuta Sette Ponti lies in the heart of the Chianti area, not far away from Arezzo. The oldest vines were planted in 1935 by Duke Amadeo d’Aosto vice-king of Ethiopia, in remembrance of a victory. It has been the property of different members of the Italian royal family until the end of the 1950s, when architect Alberto Moretti bought it from Princesses Margherita and Maria Cristina di Savoia d’Aosta, daughters of Vittorio Emanuele III, king of Italy from 1900 to 1946. The Moretti family started working at the estate as soon as the end of autumn 1957. In 1996, Antonio Fioravante Moretti, Alberto’s son, took over. He was the leader of a group of companies in the sector of luxury and fashion, but decided to follow his passion. He decided to bottle the wine directly at the estate. His 1998 Crognolo and his 1999 Oreno have both become symbols of the oenological vocation of Tuscany. The winemaker is Carlo Ferrini, one of the best in Italy, who also works for other prestigious Tuscan estates such as Fattoria di Petrolo, Talenti and Brancaia. The vineyards comprise 150 acres. The estate, like many Tuscan estates, is multi-dimensional. The huge 750-acre property incorporates a stud farm for race horses, breeding of native Tuscan Chiana cattle, a preserve for a rare breed of pig, and fields of sun flowers and maze.

The Sette Ponti estate lies fifteen miles northwest of the city of Arezzo in the heart of the Chianti zone. The name Sette Ponti translates as "seven bridges" and refers to the seven bridges crossing the Arno River on the road from Arezzo to Florence.
Curiously, in a region where 200-year-old wineries are commonplace, Sette Ponti didn't even make wine until 1997, when owner, Dr. Antonio Moretti, asked his good friend Piero Antinori if he thought the estate could produce great wines. Antinori's response, loosely translated, was "Ya, sure, ya betcha!"

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.
