Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 36 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by BradE on 8/4/2023: Close to "too" mature, but still on the good side. Fun bottle. (772 views)
Tasted by TotalEclipse1976 on 5/6/2023 & rated 88 points: Opened a bottle last night. It was clearly past its prime. Very little bubble left. Nose and taste still quite enjoyable, but should have opened it a 3-5 years sooner. (842 views)
Tasted by Artem Gulyaev on 5/23/2022 & rated 98 points: Fantastic 🔥 (1630 views)
Tasted by BradE on 5/5/2022: This was hiding in the cellar, and it's been a decade. Very tasty, liked by all (loved by some). Showing its age, but still very enjoyable. Drink up if you have some. (1751 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 10/15/2021: Back to the auctions (Bar Bould Sud): From a magnum. We had a few of these a few years ago and they were very different. Not sure if it's a question of storage or what. This poured like a champagne that was a fraction of the age. Very light and bright and almost a bit more blanc dominant. It is good and tasty. (1921 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 10/15/2021 flawed bottle: Magnum. Some cork taint. Otherwise decently fresh and alive. (2121 views)
Tasted by Odedis.Wine.reviews on 8/24/2021 & rated 92 points: Light yellow in color with a golden hue.

Strong nose of bread, spices, earth, wet leaves, herbs, yeast, white pepper, lemons, yellow apples and river rocks.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and soft, small bubbles.

Dry on the palate with light citrus, over ripen apples, spices, yeast, bread, river rocks, herbs and white pepper.

Short finish with limes.

This 28 year old Champagne is still delicious, although probably on its last leg.

Showing great complexity with a nice mouthfeel. Soft and elegant.

Not much fruit is left, but enough to make it tangy and interesting.

Good by itself or with food. I paired it with caviar and good friends. Very tasty, especially with the caviar.

12% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$550. (1647 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 5/19/2021 & rated 94 points: SLDS May 2021: Lemon, plenty of orange, woody spice. Plenty of life and lift on the palate, energetic and lively. Lots of texture and depth to this. Finishes clean and quite focused. Killer bottle, one of the best Cristals' I've had. (623 views)
Tasted by Vinophiliac559 on 11/16/2019 flawed bottle: Oxidized, tasted like a slightly fizzy sherry (2672 views)
Tasted by Vinophiliac559 on 6/30/2019 & rated 92 points: Fully mature, some oxidative notes, yeasty (2737 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 12/11/2017 & rated 93 points: Besser als das letzte Mal, aber in diesem Flight keine Chance gegen 95 und 96. Wirkt weit entwickelt. Jetzt austrinken. Sicherlich einer der Top 3 Vertreter dieses Jahrgangs. 93 (5692 views)
Tasted by Papies on 8/6/2016 & rated 93 points: Light oxitative , rich yeasty feel, good ripe fruits on the palate and a few times it reminded us more of a rose than a bite champagne. Well matured and needs to be drunk sooner than later but still very healthy and alive. Very special either way. 92-93 (7475 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 7/9/2016: Great wine with great friends (Long Island): Poured from a magnum. Interesting - usually I think of Cristal as being a bit more in the light vein with floral and fruits. This was mostly toast although it worked quite well for it. (7720 views)
Tasted by StiGGe on 6/1/2016 flawed bottle: Fragrance: Somewhat subdued and trapped scent. Ingrained smell of mildew.

Taste: Very acidic. Acid attack starts immediately. Taste flora is subdued and trapped with mold character.

Comment: A very weak vintage, even for being famous Cristal. There is an overall flavor of mold the character of the wine, with quite unpleasant tones and hiding. Approved quality of the bottle, etc., but in taste so you can enjoy not that you should do.

Edit: I must have gotten a really bad bottle!

50 points. (5997 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 2/14/2016: Escape from the Cold; 2/12/2016-2/15/2016 (Sunny & Warm Florida (Del Ray Beach, Jupiter)): Soft and supple - like cashmere. It's the standard Cristal where it's more fruit forward. Low toast. More one dimensional than I would have liked. Excellent pairing though with the Gougčres. (7041 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/20/2014: Wine Tasted at Acker Auction (Bowery Hotel - New York, NY): Tasting, brief note. Very advanced with a barnyardy character. Not much of interest left here. (5908 views)
Tasted by vinovin on 5/4/2014 & rated 94 points: Drank at Breakers for Nikki's 40th! Everything I was hoping and more- great almond nuttiness, toast, golden raisin- definitely complex, loads of bubbles, and long finish. (4119 views)
Tasted by Wine_lvr on 4/22/2013 & rated 93 points: Very nice mature champagne. Breadcrust, gooseberry, nice sweetness and acidity. Very elegant and a woderfully matured champagne. (5484 views)
Tasted by Shorepower on 11/23/2012: Lite mörkare än flaskan som drack senast.
Tasted by avp on 11/1/2012: Slightly oxidated apple purée nose with burnt sugar and some shellfish character.
Dry and pleasently crisp palate with decent moussé and oxidated appley fruit. Some burnt sugar and bitter citrus. Lengthy.
Framework ok, but aromatically rather OTH. (5696 views)
Tasted by BradE on 5/30/2012 flawed bottle: DOA. (5121 views)
Tasted by Vintomas on 4/27/2012 & rated 90 points: Lieux-Dits Champagnes from Jacquesson vs Selosse (Stockholm): Bright yellow colour. Nose of mature yellow fruit, mineral, hint of smoke, rather developed toasty notes, some cocoa, some flowers. Minerally on the attack, yellow fruit, high acidity, slight bitterness, spiciness, freshness. Some development, but still rather young. Surprisingly "blanc de blancs-styled" impression for a blended Champagne.

Tasted blind. Most of us initially guessed a younger vintage. Not a very high score for a Cristal, but a very respectable effort for a 1993, with a lot of life still ahead of it. (5469 views)
Tasted by BradE on 3/21/2012: First time with the 93 Cristal. Over lunch at the office, a very enjoyable drink. Cristal typicity. Not mind blowing, but very decent, particularly for a reasonable price. (3697 views)
Tasted by Lype on 1/11/2012 & rated 92 points: Features of aged toasted champagne, a bit loose but still attractive. (832 views)
Tasted by KostaKats on 12/19/2010 & rated 93 points: Oinofiloi Xmas Tasting 15/12/2010. Light gold - deep lemon. Hardly any bubbles but this is by no means flat or lifeless. The nose is amazing - it's like walking into a Parisian Boulangerie/Patisserie. Concentrated notes of baking bread, biscuits, cake, apples, pears, hint of honey, honeysuckle & jasmine. Cashew nuts later too as well as a mushroomy aroma. It's a sparky entry, the CO2 is still in the building! Light medium body, velvet cream mouthfeel with a palate bursting with granny smiths apples, candied lemon peel & cake. Crisp appley acidity. A champagne to savour. Soulshine. (4915 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and A˙) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
