Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 146 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by OttawaB on 3/2/2024 & rated 94 points: Beautiful wine. So well rounded and balanced. Flavours showing blackberries, cherries, plums, prunes. Then the meatiness and herbaceaous side shows up. Dusty smooth sweet tannins. Juicy. Some dried fruits creeping in as well. Really enjoying this bottle. (401 views)
Tasted by ankitmehra on 12/4/2023 & rated 92 points: Having had this wine sitting in cooler for the better part of two years after getting it gifted to me, I decided it was time to finally open it up. With a lot of reviews saying it might be over-the-hill, I was still cautiously optimistic just based off of my experiences with mature Tempranillo. Turns out I was right to be optimistic as this wine was showing incredibly well on the evening. Popped-and-poured, the nose proved to be rather tertiary as cedar wood, jam and licorice dominated alongside hints of pencil shavings, smoke and white truffle. The palate was everything I love about mature Spanish wine as the rusticity of the wine shone through by how meaty and herbaceous it was. Accompanied by mild blackcurrant, prune, plum and red cherries, the fruit felt inevitably overpowered by the aforementioned notes as well as a good amount of cassis in the upfront. As a whole, this was a great deviation for my palate that has gotten used to Bordeaux and Burgundy, making for a new experience from the storied Spanish producer Vega Sicilia. (691 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 10/19/2023 & rated 93 points: Further improved since 2020, to a real treat, on top well matching our paella. Charming, opulent nose of noble cask notes and tobacco. Medium to full bodied, with intense cedar, chocolate, plum aromas, nicely balanced against herbal notes and liquorice, with a long, rewarding finish. (377 views)
Tasted by Darkman on 1/22/2023 & rated 90 points: The wine was over its peak, a bit tired. Not sure if it the bottle was not that good, would have expected this wine to have much more life (1451 views)
Tasted by Haze78 on 10/19/2021 & rated 93 points: Etwas heller, rotfruchtiger. Etwas sweet candy, schöne frische mit gutem Säurenachhall. Gefällt mir am besten vom 1. Flight. (3421 views)
Tasted by jocelyng on 7/10/2021 & rated 95 points: Wow ! What a lovely Alion. A lot of fruits mostly raspberry flavors . Silky long finish follows a rich mouth. Excellent now. (2902 views)
Tasted by SineQuaNon on 11/5/2020 & rated 92 points: Excellent, beautiful wine holding extremely well (3471 views)
Tasted by pjaines on 9/22/2020: Still big and burly. If you do feel like opening one now then I'd suggest serving just about cellar temperature. Big, black fruits and a wall of structure and sweet fruit. I've never been totally convinced by this vintage of Alion; the 2004 was much more elegant. This is more of an Alion on 'roids. (3532 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 6/27/2020 & rated 90 points: Pruney and pretty advanced. This bottle was coravined 1y ago which probably accelerated the development. (3291 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 5/16/2020 & rated 90 points: I follow this excellent Ribera since many years and it has been constantly evolving, combining Bordeaux-type elegance with mediterranean expressions. Although this bottle did not entirely match the excellent last one the nose is charming, combining subtle cask notes and tobacco. Medium to full bodied, with intense cedar, chocolate, plum aromas, nicely balanced against herbal notes and liquorice, with a long, rewarding finish. (2111 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 5/3/2020: Last of 4 bottles - opened, but did not decant, 1 hour before dinner.

Dark red/black color - throwing lots of sediment. On nose, sweet cherry, licorice, tobacco and mushrooms. On palate, full body, medium+ acidity (very refreshing), integrated tannins and very long finish. Flavor profile of sweet cherry, savory tones, tobacco and black cherry. Ever so slightly preferred to an '05 Pintia (Toro) had the night before. 93+/- (2049 views)
Tasted by ChateauDutremble on 12/14/2019 & rated 96 points: Tellement chanceux de pouvoir boire un autre 2005...merci Ronald ! Magnifique !! Longue finale. (2276 views)
Tasted by Stefan75 on 12/3/2019 & rated 92 points: From DMag, felt younger than the last bottle 1y ago, nice expression of Ribera region and not too modern for my taste, however clearly less sophisticated than the Ornellaia 2001 we had as well that evening. (1786 views)
Tasted by menegassi on 10/24/2019 & rated 85 points: Uma certa borra no fundo, mas excelente. (1621 views)
Tasted by pjaines on 10/9/2019: This is still big, primary and chunky right now. Very bold on the palate and a lot of density. Needs a lot more time - far more robust than the 2004 which was maturing nicely. This is like the bigger framed younger brother. (1873 views)
Tasted by ciesel on 8/13/2019 & rated 92 points: Well done, drinking very well. (1895 views)
Tasted by adipovino on 7/8/2019 & rated 94 points: Perfectly mature. Wood and tannin seamlessly integrated. Notes of dark fruits, graphite, cedar and mushroom. Drink up. (1663 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 6/15/2019 & rated 92 points: Seductive, impressive Ribera, combining Bordeaux-type elegance with mediterranean expressions. Beautifully evolved nose, of cedar and tobacco. Medium to full bodied, with intense cedar, chocolate, plum aromas, nicely balanced against herbal notes and liquorice, with a long, rewarding finish. (1529 views)
Tasted by ChateauDutremble on 12/31/2018 & rated 95 points: NY Eve tasting of 6 wines: Open nose of burnt toast, lots of red fruit, old oak, cigar box...gamy and vegetal notes...tomato leaves. Fresh acidity...velvety smooth flavours of red fruit, sandalwood, spices...celery salt. Very long finish...beautiful wine!! And ready! The number one wine of the evening for three participants. Average score from six tasters: 95 including a 96, 99 and 100! (2336 views)
(2429 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 10/6/2018 & rated 93 points: In a blind tasting this was difficult to locate, as it does not strike you with the typical Tempranillo nose. Very elegant and complex nose of ripe fruit, tobcco, leather, truffle. Medium to full bodied, with a silky palate, dominated by sweet, mature fruit, leather, licorice, delicate roast aromas and mineral freshness. Excellent! (2190 views)
Tasted by Tartiflette on 9/17/2018 & rated 92 points: Good thing all bottles aren't the same. This particular bottle was a real pleasure. At a great place right now and in harmony. This wine has it all. (2152 views)
Tasted by adipovino on 8/8/2018 & rated 94 points: Drinking great now. Deep purple color, nose of blackberry, mint and tobacco. Voluptuous on the palate with fully integrated oak and tannin. Hints of chocolate on the long seamless finish. (2399 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 6/13/2018 & rated 93 points: Ramat-Aviv quintet meeting (at my home): P&P
clear, deep purple
clean, profound mature dark fruits aromas with light minty hints, earthy & oak-vanilla
dry, high tannins, high acidity, excellent balance & harmony, very good structure & complexity, fine rich mature dark fruits flavours, eucalyptus, leather, tobacco, dark chocolate, long quality finish (2516 views)
Tasted by Stefan75 on 4/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Very generous as usual and a real crowd pleaser, however relatively more advanced than similar bottle 1y ago (then Mag, now Dmag). A bit fatty compared to a beautiful 2011 Merlot from Ticino which was also served that night.... (2537 views)

Tinto Fino

Tinto Fino or Tinta del País is the local name in Ribera del Duero for Tempranillo, probably Spain’s most famous grape. The name relates to the early fruit ripening, ideal for the harsh continental climate and short growing season of the region.

In Ribera del Duero Tempranillo yields smaller berries, loose clusters and tougher skin, which encourages more skin-to-juice contact and promotes full-bodied, powerful wines that still retain the grape’s renowned elegance. It’s a vibrant, aromatic variety that offers spicy, red fruit aromas and flavors.

The combination of power and elegance represents Tempranillo’s signature in Ribera del Duero, and the region’s singular contribution to winemaking today.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
