 Tasted by no oak on 4/26/2023 & rated 80 points: First bottle of 6. Upon opening, the aroma is an awful mix of damp socks and sherry gone bad. After keeping the wine open for several days, while the palate firmed up significantly, the nose did not improve so my low score is primarily based on this. The palate contains flavors of buttered popcorn, hazelnuts, minerals, figs, and oak. Best on day 3. After being open for 5 days, the wine had faded away. Now I've got to figure out when to open the remaining 5 bottles. Will the nose ever flesh out? (557 views)

 Tasted by KenK on 10/20/2014 & rated 88 points: Found a couple of these buried deep and was going to relocate, but reviews here had me worried, so popped one. Golden yellow, clearly showing some age. Aromas of hazelnuts, caphor, and dry fig had me worried regarding oxidation. Flavors are dominated by nutty, woody warm notes, dry, yet very full mouth feel. Enjoyable to a degree, but shows oxidative qualities some may find off putting, but I still found highly drinkable. Best to drink remaining bottle very soon for a crowd not too crtital of this profile. More interesting than yummy. Drinkable, but overall admit to being disappointing. (2676 views)

 Tasted by nortonnose on 5/2/2013 & rated 91 points: Tasted blind, PnP fr 750ml. Initial nose had me guessing chenin blanc, with a sweet slightly oxed apricot aroma. Very oily note - not only on the nose but definitely oily and viscous on the palate. Oak and caramel present. The wine looked and tasted much older than it was - I guessed early-mid 90's. No rush to drink these. 91-92 today (4054 views)

 Tasted by Saint Stephen on 12/8/2012 flawed bottle: Pisser. First, I thought I had purchased the 01 Ex Voto red, only to find out that I had actually purchased the white (don't ask). Then, I read all the reviews of oxidized bottles and crossed my fingers. Finally, I opened the bottle with friends to unanimous disapproval. Close your eyes and smell: it's like an inexpensive tawny port that's been left open for too long. In the mouth, it just gets worse. Expensive mistake.

I had half a mind to give this wine a score of 50 rather than 'flawed' to drag down its average rating, given the high number of ruined bottles apparently circulating. The average score is quite misleading, given that it represents an average score for the bottles that aren't ruined...

Does "Ex Voto" somehow stand for "extremely volatile?" "Ex voodoo?" "Extra O2?" It's also an anagram of "Vote Ox" - perhaps the winemakers VOTED to throw some OX poop in the mix. (3217 views)

Nose with ripe yellow fruit, orange peel, a hint of nut, some milk chocolate, damp straw, some mineral. Full bodied on the palate, oily, very spicy, oranges, a hint of bitterness, rather low acidity, slightly nutty, mineral and menthol. Comes across as fully developed. Rather far in its development for its age, if you factor in that it is a prestige Hermitage with good concentration. (3846 views)

 Tasted by Paul S on 11/29/2011 & rated 92 points: Rhone Night (Zeffir, Dunlop Street): This was voted the favourite of the four Rhone whites amongst most of the table if I recall correctly. I preferred the Caillou CDP blanc myself for being effortlessly yummy, but I certainly thought that this one was perhaps the more interesting wine. The nose was very rich and full, with deep aromas of honey and custard apple at the fore, some minerally earth and savoury meat scents, a touch of salty sea-breeze and, with time, whiffs of almond nut and dried flowers. Lots of complexity there. There was a lot going on on the palate as well. Again, there were nice deep flavours here - beeswax, roasted nut, ripe white fruit, a very floral uplift, and then a midpalate marked with more savoury notes of bread fruit and a touch of fig, all tailing away into an earthy, spicy and ever so slightly mineral finish. The seafood salad that we drank this with then drew out all sorts of perfumy florals on the back-palate. There was tons of creamy, almost oily textured weight here, but a streak of surprisingly high acidity somehow managed to keep it all very lively in spite of its size. An interesting wine, this was complex and full of character. It is a bit of a pity that its balance was disturbed by a ring of alcohol on the palate. Otherwise, this would have been very good indeed. CÔTE-RÔTIE

Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”



CONDRIEU

With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.



SAINT-JOSEPH

Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE

A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.



CROZES-HERMITAGE

A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.



CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE

These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

• The appellation stretches over 3 com­munes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of grani­te with alluvial quaternary delta depo­sits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the nume­rous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majo­rity of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maxi­mum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
