Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 49 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Guido L. on 2/18/2024 & rated 93 points: That was a great bottle (Magnum) and probably my best one until now. The wine needs air (decanted for 1 hr). Dark cherry, cassis, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, dark chocolate and cedar. Tannins left but well integrated. The wine will keep this level for another 5+ years. (78 views)
Tasted by Guido L. on 8/28/2022 & rated 93 points: Great wine. Needs air (at least 2 hours) until showing full potential. (379 views)
Tasted by Jaegergeister on 1/22/2022 & rated 90 points: Together with 2007. I am writing after my 2007-notes. I must say the 2006 is coming closer. Decant?!? However, very good wine at the 90-border. Further impression by tomorrow
Day 2: big step forward. Needs air. Decant. 90+
Can hold its form but wouldn‘t wait another decade. On top. (520 views)
Tasted by Bosbevok on 11/2/2020 & rated 87 points: Deep garnet colour. Notes of unripened green apple with underlying prune core, strange as that sounds. Not where I like my reds. Some darker mature fruits with a menthol liquorice thread. (1015 views)
Tasted by belfast taxman on 5/12/2020 flawed bottle: Crumbly cork and despite thorough straining whilst decanting there was a hint of cork taint (1108 views)
Tasted by belfast taxman on 4/6/2020 & rated 90 points: Last time I noted on this I suggested leaving for a while, so eight years later we tried it again and there is still plenty of life left in this wine. Prune and liquorice on the palate, some tannins but not dominant. Somewhat short on the finish. (1023 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 11/23/2019 & rated 92 points: Praelum - South Africa: Then and Now (Praelum Wine Bistro): Deep ruby with garnet fading edges. Strong herbal, twiggy, meaty aromas. Acidic and tannic, with intense twiggy flavours, grass, paprika, blackberry, raspberry, tar, and charcuterie. Fair length (976 views)
Tasted by jonflo on 11/1/2019 & rated 90 points: Very nice, fruit, power, bell pepper wood, very nice structure/backbone and spices. Long live ahead. Perfect to grilled meat. Not really memorable but nice (733 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 11/22/2015 & rated 91 points: Very dark cherry and chocolate nose - seriously kirsh style nose. Light dark dust in the finish.

Dry mid palate - dark, dark cocoa chocolate with a hint of salt. (1977 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 11/22/2015 & rated 91 points: Sunday Funday 1: Dark, opaque brick red. Clear. Moderate plus intensity in the color, compact rim, and no sediment. Wine breathed in bottle for 3 hrs. Very interesting nose, never would have guessed a Bordeaux Blend. Starts off with chocolate filled with alcohol. Lots of black cherries, vanilla, baking spices and dried fruit. A little savory on the palate and drying. A tad sweet too. Moderate body with moderate tannins (6/10). Texture is kind of like sand paper. Long finish. Nose was a little of putting for me. Would love to try this with more air time. (2543 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 4/27/2015 & rated 90 points: The wine was dark ruby in colour and threw some sediment. It offered dark fruit, chocolate, cedar, leather, tobacco, spices, cinnamon and vegetal notes on the very cedary nose. On the palate the wine showed sweet dark fruit, black currant, plum, chocolate, cedar, tobacco and spices, with medium to medium-plus acidity, medium-plus tannin, moderate heat from the alcohol and good length. The concentrated, full-bodied wine was reasonably balanced and drank better than the bottle I had about four years ago. Paired well with steak. Drink now through 2020. (2476 views)
Tasted by belfast taxman on 8/2/2012 & rated 89 points: not quite convinced by this wine - has it knitted together completely? I suggest leaving it a while yet - sweetish fruit with just enough tannic backbone but short on the finish (5191 views)
Tasted by Dybdal Inc. on 6/12/2012 & rated 91 points: Nice left bank Bordeaux blend from South Africa. (5090 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 12/1/2011 flawed bottle: Unfortunately this was heat damaged. Stewed fruits. Would have like to see if this was as good as claimed. (4551 views)
Tasted by erichrod on 8/18/2011 & rated 91 points: Good, but wait (5006 views)
Tasted by marcohurt on 5/31/2011 & rated 90 points: Beim Tim & Katie gedronk (5182 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 4/9/2011 & rated 90 points: Platter tasting (By UG): Beautiful deep bouquet with sweet fruits, mainly cherries and cedar. On the palate also mainly good very juicy cherries and some dark chocolate. There is quite much sweetness and soft tannin. Medium long finish. (3519 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 3/14/2011 & rated 88 points: Decanted for about 1 1/2 hours. The wine offered cherry, sweet dark fruits, cedar and liquorice on the nose, after further aeration also marzipan, and spices on the backend. On the palate, the wine showed currant, dark fruits, cedar, and lots of tobacco on the finish. The wine was full-bodied, chewy and well structured. However, the alcohol was out of balance and all in all the wine could have been rounder. I will allow my remaining bottles another year or two in the cellar. (3342 views)
Tasted by floydtp on 8/14/2010 & rated 92 points: Nice aroma of cola and cassis. Taste is spicy cassis with some nice tartness/brightness in the mid-palette. Great mouthfeel and very approachable tannin levels. The finish is the real treat here with a long spicy finish that eventually ends on notes of bitter coffee/chocolate. Tasted before and during a dinner that included a dish with prominent tellicherry seasoning, which seemed to bring out the spice in the wine. Great bottle and should continue to improve. (3806 views)
Tasted by Manus on 2/15/2010 & rated 90 points: Deep purple in colour. Powerful nose of black fruit, plum, oak, spices and pepper. Fine tannins and very smooth in palate. Has very concentrated and intense flavour. Good structure and long aftertaste. Recommended if you prefer powerful, intense and fruity wine. Would be better if it has higher complexity.

DE TOREN
FUSION V 2006

TASTING NOTES:

Mineral tones greet you at first, followed by sweet ripe blackcurrant, cinnamon, caramel and liquorish. The flavours that remain on the palate after it is swallowed are long lasting. Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Stellenbosch Wine Routes

Stellenbosch

The historical town of Stellenbosch boasts a winemaking tradition which stretches back to the end of the 17th-century.

Stellenbosch is the educational and research centre of the winelands. Stellenbosch University is the only one in South Africa with a viticultural and oenological department, and many of the country's most successful winemakers studied there. The Nietvoorbij Institute of Viticulture and Oenology is also in Stellenbosch and this organisation has one of the most modern experimental wineries in the world and, at its experimental farms (situated in several wine growing districts), important research into new varietals, clones and rootstocks is undertaken.

The mountainous terrain, good rainfall, deep well-drained soils and diversity of terroirs make this a sought-after viticultural area. The rapidly increasing number of wine estates includes some of the most famous names in Cape wine. The district, with its mix of historic estates and contemporary wineries, produces excellent examples of almost all the noble grape varieties.

The intensively farmed Stellenbosch district has been divided up into several smaller viticultural pockets including Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, Bottelary, Devon Valley and Banghoek.
