Tasted by Jimswinecellar on 5/31/2022 & rated 92 points: It was an excellent wine! (977 views)
Tasted by merlotsmile on 8/27/2021 & rated 90 points: Mörk frukt, plommon, tobak, lite kryddig, soja
I smaken inte så jättemycket koncentration med rätt sträva tanniner. Hyfsad finish.
85% cabernet sauvignon and 15% sangiovese (1466 views)
Tasted by Jimswinecellar on 8/2/2021 & rated 92 points: Deinking very well. More years left. (1368 views)
Tasted by traveldragon on 8/12/2020 & rated 96 points: Drinking well now and should have a few years left, despite some notes that it is past it's prime (1832 views)
Tasted by liber on 11/2/2018 & rated 90 points: Last of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, starting to lose fruit relative to last years bottle and tannins more obtrusive, may yet resolve though probably best to drink up. VGI (17). (2513 views)
Tasted by liber on 12/10/2017 & rated 90 points: 10th and 11th of 12, decanted an hour, perfect corks and levels, nice clean, but muted compared with the 99 and 2000 on same night and with less to it, still plenty of life, but can't imagine it improving from here. VGI (17). (3022 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 11/4/2017: I may even like this better than the Messorio, at least on the nose.

Although I think I still prefer the Messorio on the palate.

All in, pretty decent wines tonight. (2782 views)
Tasted by liber on 8/13/2017 & rated 92 points: 9th of 12, decanted 30 minutes, perfect cork and level, back to usual form. F (17.5). (2891 views)
Tasted by NNV on 4/29/2017 & rated 92 points: Lovely. Good, deep, fruit. Juicy blackberry. Decent acid. Tad hot. Nice long finish. Very enjoyable. (3176 views)
Tasted by liber on 4/26/2017 & rated 89 points: 8th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, not such a good bottle, browner, muddier, much less well delineated. At best VG+ (16.5). (2186 views)
Tasted by liber on 11/9/2016 & rated 92 points: 7th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, another splendid showing both technically and in terms of pleasure, the delineation, structure and texture (notwithstanding the slightly dry tannin) are admirable, if it carries on developing so well, expect an upgrade. A strong F (17.5). (2087 views)
Tasted by liber on 10/4/2016 & rated 92 points: 6th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, excellent showing tonight, aromatics developed beautifully since my April note and lovely silky, pure and nuanced mid palate, spoiled slightly by granular dry tannin on exit (a regular feature in many Italian wines I find), no rush to drink. F (17.5). (2016 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 8/5/2016 & rated 90 points: This bottle was firm and substantial, with gobs of old world charm. Really good. (2085 views)
Tasted by elledeca on 5/15/2016: nice wine, balanced and with dark fruit and herbs flavours. enjoyed? yes. Buy again? not sure. (2053 views)
Tasted by liber on 4/4/2016 & rated 91 points: 5th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level - as last year's note, attractive purity although could do with more dimension, a tad austere still, more pleasurable to my palate than the bigger but more tannic 97 on same night. Just F (17.5). (1949 views)
Tasted by Kmok on 1/15/2016 & rated 82 points: M+ brick-red. M+ intensity, tobacco, herbs, black fruits and pale liquorice. M- bodied. Rounded tannins with substances. Pepper on palate. Long after taste. Still structured and balanced after 24 hours although the acidity becomes more noticeable.

*Cab blended with merlot and sangiovese
*12-15mth in 12HL oak (no toast or medium)
*18-24mth in bt (1999 views)
Tasted by liber on 9/25/2015 & rated 92 points: 4th of 12, opened an hour, perfect level and cork, previous notes very good or better - garnet robe, bright, little rim development; classy bouquet now developing, cassis, black cherry, some truffle and tobacco; medium bodied, decent length and balance, grip, quite silky, well made, pure, seemed to lose some energy after 2 hours, but generally still on improving trend. (2135 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 8/12/2015 & rated 88 points: A bit soft and dull. Still enjoyable with nice dark fruit and a little spice. Suspect I waited a bit too long on this one. (1973 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 8/28/2014 & rated 89 points: Drinking very well, though I must say I was slightly disappointed with how much this has aged in the last few years. Last time I had it a few years ago, it was still youthful and powerful, and it is suddenly soft and mature. Drink now and over the next year or three. (2945 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 12/3/2012 & rated 91 points: Farewell Dinner for Margaret & Kevin (Chez Patrick Restaurant, 2/F, Garden East, 222 Queen's Road East, Wan Chai, Hong Kong): Very vibrant jewelled ruby red translucent colour. Nose is very alluring: soft velvety, violets, gamey in a great way and the epitome of "dusky"....like old lofts and Poinsettia petals. Palate is nicely acidic in cut seamlessly integrated with velvety resolved tannins and still a lot of fruit.....strawberries and redberries. Plush and sensual and overlaid all evening with a wonderful dusky scent whenever you raised the glass towards you. With extended time it opened up a lot to coffee aromas and milk coffee richness but still maintained a balance with lovely acidic cut. Moderate length, which was its only shortcoming. This paired beautifully with the Magret Duck Tartare. 91+ (4595 views)
Tasted by bablues on 10/27/2012 & rated 89 points: Took to Tuscany in Oakbrook. Not much at first, in fact at first impression I thought this was completely done. But after a little time to open up it was quite pleasant, but nowhere near the level of the 94 or the 03 which I absolutely love. (3907 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 10/14/2012: Excellent intensity and balance. This is 90% Cab Sauvignon, and I could have easily mistaken it for an excellent Bordeaux from a good ripe year.
Nice match with Tuscan style steak in garlic and rosemary. (3871 views)
Tasted by VTCellarDweller on 10/7/2011 & rated 92 points: Our only bottle, purchased in 2006 from a northern NJ shop specializing in Italian wines and kept in our passive cellar since. Decanted for one hour and served with dinner at home.
Medium deep brick red color with just a touch of browning at the edge of the rim. The nose was enticing but a little restrained in the beginning, and opened up very nicely with mature aromas of black fruits, grilled mushrooms, leather, licorice, and spice box during the next hour. Impressive focused flavors that seemed fresh, lively, and harmonious with a polished feel, good length, and superb balance at 13% ABV. This has enough acidity to keep it together for several more years with silky tannins that only started to become more evident in the finish at the end of the bottle. This is a very classy wine with several years left in it. A very nice pairing to the chicken provencal and cheese course that followed. 92+ (4740 views)
Tasted by CMz on 8/9/2009 & rated 92 points: Opened and decanted for 60 minutes. Deep ruby to the edge, nose of black fruit, mostly cherry & currant, and a smoky spice. Medium body but still a big wine with balanced tannins - a bit of burnt oak with a lot of cherry, black currant & smoke on the palate. For all of it's presence I think the '98 is a wine for the next 2-3 years - perhaps best now with at least an hour decanting. Enjoy with food! (3606 views)

Rockss and Fruit (2/7/2005)
(Castello di Rampolla Sammarco) Right off the bat it was very apparent that this was not as ripe as the '97. Which is not a demerit against the wine at all. Ripeness is not all. Still this was very opulent on the palate but the tannins were more there and less fine than the '97. The nose was a bit more developed than the '97 with great complex spice, menthol, black berries, cherries and mineral. Despite the wealth of tannins this was pretty accesible but has some legs.

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
