Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 44 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SadEdjo on 2/11/2018 & rated 91 points: Tar, dark fruits, good acidic balance. Dark notes. Nicely resolved tannins. Surprisingly youthful (2123 views)
Tasted by TudseFar on 2/1/2015 & rated 90 points: Very nice - almost bubbly. Should be enjoyed this year, but still very good. (3587 views)
Tasted by stoneb on 1/16/2014 flawed bottle: Another dumper (3908 views)
Tasted by PangurBan on 4/21/2012 & rated 86 points: I found this wine in the back of my cellar where it had been ignored too long. I expected it to be quit dead, but decided to give it a try before poring it down the drain. Dark black pit fruits with a hint of licorice on the nose and palate. Soft and smooth in the mouth but lacking the nice acid lift it had when younger. Sadly the wine is showing its age but was better than expected. (4721 views)
Tasted by rgrosz6 on 4/1/2012 & rated 90 points: Too bad this got lost in my cellar - it is definitely WAY past prime. After decanting, showed lots of blackberry and dark fruits. It was really interesting for about 1/2 hour, then it started to taste unbalanced. (4530 views)
Tasted by seejanecook on 4/10/2010 flawed bottle: turned bad (4143 views)
Tasted by grossie on 11/19/2009 & rated 90 points: The bottle started with a strange bite- not tannin, but almost like a spritz. After a couple of hours it has settled down quite a bit. It's dark colored, & smells dark too. Some spice & earth, as well as dark fruit. On the tongue it has still got a lot of power, huge blue fruit, sweet tannin, & a powerful end. It doesn't last too long, but it's not displeasing. I'd go with about the same 90 points I gave it a few years back. No improvement, but no decline either. (3391 views)
Tasted by CDStrombom on 8/14/2008 & rated 91 points: Nearing the end of its drinking window, but still a beautiful wine. Sweeter and smoother than I had expected. This was probably due to the the age. (3339 views)
Tasted by RonB on 8/1/2008 & rated 91 points: Excellent. Needs to breathe for 30 mins to an hour. Dark, inky color. Soft tannins with smokey, bacon flavor. Good with salami and cheese. (2909 views)
Tasted by PangurBan on 7/27/2008 & rated 84 points: A once outstanding wine that is now past its prime and moving on the downside of the evolutionary trail. Still has some fruit which hints at what it wine once was but now slowly becoming cloying. (3044 views)
Tasted by formula1 on 6/5/2008 & rated 91 points: Dense colour with lots of blackberry and dark fruits. Very long lingering finish. (2912 views)
Tasted by stoneb on 4/22/2008 flawed bottle: I bought 3 bottles of this after a friend served it at a dinner party (and I enjoyed it). First bottle was very lively soda pop; the cork literally blew off once I started to pull. The rest went down the drain. Went down to the cellar for a second bottle, and it was old soda pop -- not quite as fizzy, but still a dumper. Still have one left and hope it will fare better, but calling it a night on this wine. (2956 views)
Tasted by Mark on 2/21/2008 & rated 90 points: No tasting note. Slightly defective, a very small amount of fizz on opening. This seemed to go away after thirty minutes. Overall, not very nice, especially considering the price. This is a wine that has improved quite a bit since release. Lots of sediment. (3430 views)
Tasted by dmhoro on 2/5/2008 flawed bottle: Fizzy and bad. (3202 views)
Tasted by michelvl on 12/10/2007 & rated 92 points: Consistently strong. See my previous notes. Drink now. (3480 views)
Tasted by Combee1 on 11/2/2007 & rated 87 points: Took to a friends house. No formal tasting note. Just remember that it was very tight prior to aerating. Opened up after an hour. Big jammy with little complexity, but enjoyable. Nice value. (3592 views)
Tasted by MBannon on 5/25/2007 & rated 91 points: Wow, even after reading all the tasting notes, this was much better than I expected. Tons of earthy notes, like a damp forest floor, and all backed by solid fruit and structure. If this had been poued blind I would have pegged it for a SW French blend. Wonderful wine, outstanding value. (3628 views)
Tasted by michelvl on 5/20/2007 & rated 92 points: consistent. drink now. (3469 views)
Tasted by djs on 4/25/2007 & rated 92 points: Very good qpr (3920 views)
Tasted by SonomaFan on 1/27/2007 & rated 94 points: Fantastic. Decanted for an hour or so (thanks to your suggestions) and this wine was spectatular. Sad this was my only bottle. (3885 views)
Tasted by michelvl on 1/24/2007 & rated 92 points: see previous note. Needs 3 hours of decanting. (3807 views)
Tasted by coletrane on 12/13/2006 & rated 92 points: Wow. Loved it. Full of fruit, yet restrained. Would rate it higher except I need to leave room forTorbreck's higher end bottles, which I'm sure are loaded with "shock and awe." As long as they aren't corked. (4047 views)
Tasted by Stirling on 11/28/2006 & rated 85 points: Dark colour, nice nose of blackberry and currant but on the palate there was a burnt rubber taste dominating the fruit which spoiled an otherwise well made wine. Tasted twice with consistent notes. (4048 views)
Tasted by michelvl on 11/25/2006 & rated 92 points: Very deep crimson colour with crimson hue. The nose displays impressive varietal lift. Top notes of ripe plum and vanilla, followed by blackberry. The palate reveals notes of stewed plum, liquorice and spices, with the back palate being quite spicy. Fine grained tannins. Aftertaste of plums and stewed fruit. (4104 views)
Tasted by Dan M on 11/22/2006: Quite a reduced flavor upon opening. With a little time in the glass this went away and drank quite nicely. Typical woodcutters with staightforward shiraz taste and not a great deal of complexity. Always great QPR. (4204 views)
