Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Zweder on 6/9/2016 & rated 90 points: UWS (@ JB): In the bouquet cherries, plums, earth and rustic flavors. On the palate plums, cherries, sweet spices, soft tannin, well balanced and a good length. The wine is at its peak now and will not really improve anymore. (1834 views)
Tasted by kostaslonis on 4/23/2016 & rated 87 points: Nice but sadly fully developed (at least). Tannins had melted away, sweeet spices, a few oak splinters here and there, red fruits and with after quite some time, there were glimpses of the past with leather and a few more gamey nuances. Should have drank that one a couple of years ago.
Still, a nice experience (1406 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 2/22/2014 & rated 92 points: Most comments at tasting were that this was Grenache or CdP. Very nice red fruit on the nose and palate. This has matured beautifully, but was my last bottle. (1889 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 5/27/2013 & rated 89 points: Weekly tasting group #073; Red wines from the Mediterranean. (@ BD): Ruby red with a carmine rim. The bouquet is a bit dusty with ripe red fruits, chocolate and raisins. On the palate a lot of sweetness, ripe red fruits like strawberries, sweet spices and light acidity. A very joyful and easy drinking wine. Completely ready now. (2688 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 2/23/2011 & rated 92 points: Fantastic wine, ruby coloured, intensely aromatic - with fresh black fruit, coffee, spice, licorice and violets and very flavourful. Palate is medium to full bodied with sweet ripe but fresh fruit, black pepper. Everything is in balance, acidity brings freshness, tannins are ripe and soft, finish is long. I wouldn't let it longer in the cellar but there is not the slightest hint of fatigue in this wine. (2861 views)
Tasted by rjhilgers@gmail.com on 12/24/2009 & rated 92 points: old vine mourvedre. cherry, chocolate, anise, chalk, very little oak. beautiful wine. at the tasting, heard "oh, that's the stuff" from someone next to me. couldn't agree more (2733 views)
Tasted by Chateaunole-du-Pape on 12/5/2009 & rated 91 points: Beautiful nose. I spent a good 15 minutes just smelling it on and off before taking a sip. Black fruits and some spices on the palate. Very nice. Wish I had more... (2344 views)
Tasted by DianeR on 10/27/2008 & rated 91 points: Very good - much lighter and more fruit-forward than I expected. Nose dominated by berry flavors (currant, blackberry) and some earthy, spicy notes. Good balance and structure. Some sediment - probably should have decanted this one. (1980 views)
Tasted by nwood on 12/28/2007: Easy drinking, none too complex - soft with notes of vanilla (2032 views)
Tasted by winefornewbies-podcast on 12/30/2006 & rated 85 points: Very good, but nothing that stands out in my memory. I'd buy it and drink it again without hesitation. (2322 views)
Tasted by Kahalu'u Bob on 11/28/2006 & rated 88 points: Good Bonny Doon wine. Nice noise, good finish. Generally good fruit and balance. (2247 views)
Tasted by ken-yyz on 2/12/2006 & rated 93 points: Fantastic bottle! Deep, dense colour. Thick and concentrated yet very lively. Dark red and blue fruits with an outstanding, long finish.

I wish I had more than a single bottle! (2375 views)
Tasted by ggtirevite on 12/28/2005 & rated 80 points: Had at Jacqueline's. Nice nose, but nothing else. (2489 views)
Tasted by strulock on 11/16/2005 & rated 85 points: Pleasant medium body wine with pepper and roasted meat. Balanced fruit with little to no lingering finish. An easy drinker. (3262 views)
Tasted by andrewstevenson.com on 10/29/2005 & rated 96 points: A nice perfumed nose. Good, nicely perfumed palate with a gentle textured fragrance. Excellent. (3000 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 2/4/2005 & rated 90 points: Heritage: Blkberry, hint of spice but still fruity; nuance of horse blanket or smoke/taosty oak; Full bod, spicey mth w/good a’s; blueberry notes in there too; long fin. w/ med. t’s. (807 views)

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Producer website

Bonny Doon was sold in early 2020 to "WarRoom", a wine production and marketing entity formed in 2018. Per a January 2020 Decanter article - https://www.decanter.com/wine-news/californias-bonny-doon-sold-430550/ - "Graham will retain creative control of Bonny Doon’s wines, but production will change from 35,000 cases of 15 different wines annually to just four wines: the flagship red Rhône blend Le Cigare Volant; Le Cigare Blanc (based on Vermentino); Vin Gris de Cigare (a Rhône varietal rosé); and a 100% Picpoul."

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
