Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by scott davis on 10/19/2019 & rated 89 points: Deep golden in color, with ripe pear, honeydew, and marshmallow aromas on the nose. The palate shows a mix of vanilla oak and white peach, honeydew, and apricot flavors that turn crisp on the finish. Still showing life remaining. (604 views)
Tasted by 9500mesa on 4/29/2014 & rated 92 points: fresh and crisp, not a buttery Chardonnay (1826 views)
Tasted by mldiestel on 7/6/2012 & rated 88 points: Buttery and smooth but lacked the fruit I was hoping for after drinking a bottle a couple years ago. I think I missed it's prime but all in all a fine drinker with decent oak. (2409 views)
Tasted by winesnob4u on 6/28/2011 & rated 88 points: Good smooth taste.. Starting to turn a little dark in color. (3157 views)
Tasted by Fishboy on 6/8/2010 & rated 86 points: Alot of butter and some oak, vanilla and citrus notes. (3084 views)
Tasted by theduck on 2/19/2010 & rated 89 points: Oak, butter, vanilla, hay, nice spice finish (3121 views)
Tasted by DaveZack on 12/31/2009 & rated 89 points: Bought this bottle at the Napa Valley winery's tasting room for $46 and served with cream of roasted tomato soup before dinner. This is a classic rich, creamy, powerful, nutty, over-the-top Napa Chardonnay. The wine has a darker-than-usual golden hue with a nose of oak, pineapple, and caramel. The wine may have been fermented in barrel, based on the oaky, rich, caramelly (sp?) flavor notes (including tropical fruits (especially pineapple)). This wine didn't pair terribly well with the tomato soup (DOH!); it would have paired much better with scallops, lobster, or a seafood-pasta salad. But if you like rich, creamy, oaky Napa Chardonnays, this one's difficult to beat. It's fabulously delicious and creamy, and properly paired with the right food, would be a real winner. It's not cheap; we bought this untasted, based on the wine steward's strong recommendation (we fell in love with their Rose and Sauvignon Blanc and felt comfortable enough with their whites to buy this bottle without tasting it first). No matter how you slice it, this is a delicious Chardonnay. Just don't expect any stainless steal fermentation; this Bad Boy practically has oak splinters floating inside the bottle. The sub-90 score is based on the price. If this bottle were $30-ish, we would have scored it well North of 90 points. As all things in life, everything's relative...... (2442 views)
Tasted by clayfu on 9/2/2009 & rated 91 points: Tasting exceptional wines at Alpha Omega (Napa) (Rutherford, CA): a nose of peach, straw, and lemon with slate undertones. There is a tinge of butter on the nose but the most prominent characteristic is the straw and lemon. On the palate it has several soft silky layers of flavors, from a hint of butter that's typical of napa chard but there is a blend of lemon zest in the background that mixes with long acidity. Well integrated at this point. Very nicely done for the style (3460 views)
Tasted by twelch on 8/18/2009 & rated 87 points: Wish this had more fruit! Way too much butter for me and lacking in acidity. If you hadn't just drank this you'd never even know it was in your mouth it is so smooth and soft. I liked the AO red wines a lot but for the price of this I definately won't be buying any more.  Tasted by Eric Guido on 7/17/2009 & rated 91 points: Lemon tart and pine nut on the nose, a bit toasty. Full with bright citrus on the palate. Not tiring in any way. A lasting fresh finish. (2229 views)
Tasted by gripNsip on 7/10/2009 & rated 87 points: My first trip to Napa, Ca.; 7/9/2009-7/11/2009: Fresh nose of apple, citrus fruit with a large toasted oak component. Really silky in the mouth with toasted wood and popcorn flavors so large the fruit almost seems like a secondary player in the wine. Despite this is finishes cleanly. A clean oak-bomb, surprising I would rate it this so highly looking at my notes now but I must have enjoyed it at the time. (3698 views)
Tasted by subtlet on 7/10/2009 & rated 86 points: Napa Valley, July 2009; 7/9/2009-7/11/2009 (Napa Valley, CA): All kinds of oaky butter on the nose here, as well as a hint of cured meats. The oak is all over the palate as well, and is more butter flavored than vanilla. The acid is light, and, while powerful, the oak is smooth, but I want more fruit. (3719 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
