Community Tasting Notes (average 88.4 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 69 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Kenny_G on 5/23/2020 & rated 89 points: A mid $20s Napa Cabernet that is meant to be a moderately priced wine that gives the drinker an idea of how impressively tasty a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon can rightly be, enjoyable young while still being ageworthy, all without emptying your wallet. At 14 years old this wine has aged well. The cork was somewhat crumbly when pulled but without causing the wine to be flawed, largely thanks to the wine's having an opaque color with an inch pour, no oxidation. and a still sturdy tannin and acidity. with an enjoyable fruit of blackberry, black cherry, and black currant. Aging gave the wine both a smoother texture and better integration. (1525 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 3/4/2016 & rated 89 points: Decated an tasted, very big, rich, concentrate and of course extracted. Dark, dark fruits, sweet, but not over done compared to some styles, over the top for many but on the border for the most.. No Donald Trump but extreme in a GOP way! (4577 views)
Tasted by Duderino on 6/16/2015 & rated 93 points: Drinking wonderfully right now! (4103 views)
 Tasted by bluepeter2020@outlook.com on 4/25/2015 & rated 92 points: Phenomenal!!! (3448 views)
Tasted by Griffeyfan04 on 8/14/2013 & rated 89 points: from a 375. itwas a nice bottle with good tartness and cassis. A nice kiss of oak. this was ready to drink on opening. A decent finish that was pleasant to drink. (6439 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 6/22/2013 & rated 89 points: Good solid cab, plums, currants, cassis, smooth and ready to go. (5633 views)
Tasted by raypedia on 4/24/2013 & rated 88 points: Black fruit, currants and vanilla on the nose. Restrained tart black fruit, currant, and cocoa/vanilla mid palate, still a bit tight after 30-45 minutes in the glass but continued to open. Fruit began to reassert itself but never very boldly. Tannic and finishing long with a very tart and dry close. UPDATE: I had about half a bottle left, which I vacuum sealed and put in the refrigerator for about 36 hours. After returning it to room temperature, the fruit on the nose and on the palate were a little more evident. I also detected an earthiness on the nose that may have been there before, but was more pronounced after the resting period. It retained a spicy note towards the back of the palate and on the finish. All this suggests to me that it may still need a number of years in the bottle to reach its peak. Based on this additional experience, I'm going to increase my rating from 86 to 88. (3131 views)
Tasted by JBee on 3/9/2013 & rated 87 points: Let breathe two hours. Nose showed strong bell pepper and dark fruit. Mid-weight on the palate, fruit forward punch of candied dark berries, earth and bell pepper, with little to no finish. Vacuvin-ed last glass for next night and it showed hot tart thin sour cherry.
A low $20's purchase at Costco a few years back, happy to have held. (3924 views)
Tasted by Billiken on 1/14/2013 & rated 87 points: - Crimsom color with a medium finish. (3582 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 1/4/2013 & rated 87 points: Bright ruby appearance. The nose is a bit closed, but after a half hour in the glass, plum, black cherry, mixed berries, and leather come through and carry over to the palate. It's on the thin side of mid-bodied, but it's bright, fruit forward, and very fresh, displaying decent varietal typicity. Finishes with a short mineral note.

Paired with grilled Burgundy Tri-tip and salmon at the Aliotta's. Thanks, G and family! (2210 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 5/28/2012 & rated 89 points: Toned down from the last time I tasted this. Huge fruit bomb, with blackberries, bluberries, currants and cassis abound. Smooth tannins! (2572 views)
Tasted by SpoochMan on 5/26/2012 & rated 82 points: I think CT users are substantially too optimistic about this wine. It has some decent varietal character, but it is somewhat thin and short-finishing. We had this previously in a blind tasting and it didn't fare well then either. With a steak, this did take on a bit of weight and it was better with food than without. I did pick up a cherry cola note that I liked. But I think there are a lot of better cabs at $20-30. This is just mediocre. (2469 views)
Tasted by Klensing on 12/3/2011 & rated 89 points: Very nice on day 2. Not so much on day 1 (3053 views)
Tasted by Gandrews on 11/23/2011 & rated 87 points: The wine was very tannic after breathing for only a half hour. Lots of fruit on the tongue with cherries and rasberry standing out. The wine continued to get better over time (2hrs) ending up with a nice finish. I think this is a good wine in the low 20.00 range and could be better with more time on the shelf. (2912 views)
Tasted by Gandrews on 11/19/2011 & rated 87 points: Very tannic when first opened. After an hour the finish was better but not great. Nice tastes of berries and plum and a hint of cherries. A good medium bodied wine for everyday consumption. (2855 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 10/18/2011 & rated 89 points: Shy nose with dried cherry and licorice. Palate is rather high toned, with very prominent fine tannins on the backend with an austerity that forms an impressive backbone. Cherry and currants on the palate that hang for a lengthy finish with a hint of milk chocolate. Still rather backward and closed, but a Napa cab in a classic style. Backward, prominent structure, fine acid, and subtle oak. Needs 3-5yrs and should improve. (2708 views)
Tasted by redman77 on 8/13/2011: PnP... but Resealed for tomorrow either flawed or needs time to open (2854 views)
Tasted by psusfca on 4/10/2011 & rated 93 points: This was delicious. Softer tannins and nice fruit worked well with the Roast Leg of Lamb with Wilted Escarole course of the dinner party. This was the fourth course in the meal, we had 3 wine pairings before this, but I am confident that this was a terrific wine and a great deal compared to what most other wines cost. (3519 views)
Tasted by markandsusanw on 1/27/2011 & rated 90 points: Poured through Vinturi ... A very nice, full-bodied Cab with a beautiful nose. Rich, with big, up front fruit and a decent tannic backbone. The finish is a bit short, but otherwise a really nice wine and a great QPR at $22. (3807 views)
Tasted by AGenochio on 12/8/2010 & rated 89 points: first night was good but with tight fruit and a ton of tannins. Second night was great. The fruit really opened up. An hour or two in the decanter might help. Would by again. (4122 views)
Tasted by paindude on 12/4/2010 & rated 88 points: Needs to open up, strong tannins (3961 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 12/4/2010 & rated 89 points: Decanted and poured, good concentration, quite rich, with cassis, currants and a good dose of spicey oak, all nicely balanced. Moderate finish with some tannins to shed. 89+ (3915 views)
 Tasted by Bryan94 on 8/13/2010 & rated 84 points: - Dark fruits.
- Tart front, peppery finish. (2167 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 4/22/2010 & rated 88 points: Wine Enthusiast Toast of the Town. Nose of dark fruit, tasty but average for a reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, medium body and finish. (815 views)
 Tasted by Flav333 on 3/13/2010 & rated 89 points: Good (4958 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
