Tasted by CB wine on 1/24/2024 & rated 94 points: Still a flavor bomb. Very smooth tannins. I don’t see anything bad or off with this wine. Great way to experience aged wine. 1997 was an excellent vintage. Finished 3 bottles over 2023. Just purchased two more bottles for upcoming dinners. Getting a bit expensive at $397. My first few bottles were $297. For the $397, you can get the 2013 vintage which was also excellent and will still age. One of the 1997 bottles I consumed, the cork fell apart while opening. An aerator with screen saved the day. The wine was fine. Very smooth tannins, lots of fruit and very long finish. (355 views)
Tasted by CB wine on 11/10/2023 flawed bottle: Still tastes very good. Had flank steak Gouda cheese and salad. If priced right, will buy more. (510 views)
Tasted by Ruby99 on 9/28/2022 & rated 93 points: Just the slightest hint of lighter red color at the rim
The nose is musty/green tomato but with sweet dark fruit breaking thru
On the palate the wine is round rich and long with black cherry and black raspberry and a good amount of spicy tannin at the finish
Definitely a palate-coating and tooth-staining kind of wine
Despite it's age and being a "second wine" this is an excellent bottle and will be for another 10 years. Thoroughly enjoyable (1589 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 7/2/2022 & rated 91 points: PNP. Deep blood red. Big juicy plum and extracted fruits with mocha notes, orange rind, cassis and shaved bark. The wine definitely needs to be drunk in the near future if you still have any left. As the 2nd wine of Harlan, the structure is there but this wine seems to have a 20 year lifespan.

p.s. waygu filets with roasted cauliflower and Bibb lettuce salad (1794 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 1/12/2022 & rated 94 points: Open that bottle - Dan chooses 1997 The Maiden (My house): 30 minute decant. The profile seems dark and yet there is a lot of red fruit and acid. Spicy, leather, it has that soft Harlan structure that is both interesting and comforting. (2982 views)
Tasted by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine on 1/12/2022 & rated 95 points: Open THAT Bottle - at Joe's: About a 30 minute double decant - This was my first Maiden, and it was a very pleasant surprise! Nose was simply amazing! Palate was good, but did not quite reach the heights of the nose. All in all, a well integrated wine that is still drinking young, i.e., more fruit-forward, but also showing tertiary character. I like where it is now, i.e., a nice balance of fruit and tertiary flavors that tilts to the fruit end.

Nose was very perfumed with loads of blackberry pie, violets, some backing spice and sweet wooden notes. Palate showed black fruit, some earthy notes, sweet toasted oak, with some leather, chocolate and bramble. Texture was plush and velvety. Not quite as pronounced as previous Harlan Estate wines, but a little softer version of them. This was an impressive wine in its own right. Drink or hold, depending on your palate. Nose was a 96+ and palate was 94 - I scored the wine a solid 95. (3297 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 8/22/2021 & rated 93 points: Eucalyptus, red raspberry, rosemary, deep red currant and anise. Tannins with a firm, chalky grip. Ripe black fruits on the backend that get bigger as the wine sits. A fresh pour revives all the nuances - should be drunk soon. Pairs beautifully red meat.

p.s. prime beef sirloin with king crab and grilled zucchini (2989 views)
Tasted by Pinotfanbg on 10/1/2020 flawed bottle: Second bottle of three. Horribly corked and undrinkable. I've never seen a hollow cork like this one. When I pressed the screw in a bit of wine popped out of the otherwise intact cork. Quite a shame to hold this for 20 years and get this result. Purchased in a three pack on release. (2218 views)
Tasted by irvingn on 9/2/2020 & rated 93 points: This wine had amazing structure going for it. It was a little reticent when it was first popped but with some decanting really opened up. I decanted and drank over 3 hours. The last glass was the best. I like my wines older and felt this was good enough to hold for a few more years. (2109 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 8/7/2020 & rated 93 points: this note is for a tasting a week ago. A medium bodied higher acidity cab. It's holding up but time has robbed it of some of its fruit. drink sooner rather than later. (1784 views)
Tasted by Marc on 3/23/2020 & rated 87 points: Wedding and Birthday Celebrations (Pokai Parera, Ekatahuna, New Zealand): I note that my score have been trending down over the past decade. Massive in proportion, with think, ad chew tannins. The nose is completely dominated by VA, to the detriment of the overall experience. Ultra-ripe, sweet fruit, chocolaty, but also feeling slightly tired now. In the context of its flight (next to a stunning Pichon Baron 1990) and food, this felt opaque, whick and slightly dull. I can imagine that the wine woukd shine with a thick (and simple) BBQed steak. Context is everything with wine, but his wine feel unbalanced to me. (2189 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 3/13/2020 & rated 95 points: Decanted over cocktails and served. At 23 years, still dense and lush with brandied fruit and mature tannins. Super. (2017 views)
Tasted by Dawinelover on 1/13/2019: Still drinking incredibly well with loads of fruit. Lots of life left in this wine! (2586 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 7/7/2018 & rated 95 points: The 1997 Maiden surpassed expectations. Is this really a 21 year old "second" wine. Of course, I've scored several bottles of the 1997 Harlan Estate 100 points, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised! This has aged beautifully, and is significantly better than in it's younger years. Plenty of fruit, blackberries, currants, and black cherries, with some licorice, earthiness, and hints of mocha and herbal notes. An elegant wine, full bodied with nice complexity and a long finish. (3435 views)
Tasted by rrNYC on 2/10/2018 & rated 95 points: Excellent wine, has definitely softened around the edges since I last opened a bottle a few years ago. (3185 views)
Tasted by TXRhoneRanger on 11/12/2017 & rated 96 points: Really impressive bottle. Consumed over 2 days. Even on day 2 it was shining bright. Brooding black fruits balanced well with soft oak, and delicious earth component. Really stunning 20 years in. WOW. (2967 views)
Tasted by Marc on 11/7/2017 & rated 91 points: Very ripe and structured. Clearly in the Californian Cult style, I'n terms of generous alcohol and ripeness that flirts with over-ripeness. The massive tannins and acid structure adds definition. This is ageing quite well, showing excellent varietal typicity, caramel bottle age, a touch of cedar and plum/prune nuance. Extremely long. Viscous and complete. Certainly outstanding, if not quite as impressive as the last tasting in 2011. (2961 views)
Tasted by Fid on 2/14/2015 flawed bottle: Oxidized, Undrinkable. Another bust from wine.com. (7145 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 11/16/2014 & rated 92 points: Nice wine but slightly off balance and alcoholic. Ripe fruit, cotton candy, evident oak, a bit hollow..I don't see improvement. I bet this was much better 5 years ago. (5916 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 8/1/2014 & rated 96 points: Excellent wine! Very rich & dense. Motor oil like viscosity, dark purple in the glass. Very youthful, still has plenty of life ahead of it. (6062 views)
Tasted by floridawinedrkr on 7/6/2014 & rated 96 points: Outstanding! excellent mouth feel with loads of berries. A little sweet with a little heat at the end. Just popped and poured. I believe a 2+ hour decant on this wine would have made it even better. Plenty of time left on this one. Well worth the price. Best wine I have had in a long time. (6098 views)
Tasted by RickyT12 on 6/15/2014 & rated 95 points: Very dark purple color.Dill pickle, black berries on the nose. Good heavy weight coats the mouth big time. Great mouth feel. Medium low acid. A little bitter flavors. Nice dark fruit and eucalyptus flavors, also bubble gum flavors. WOTN for me against some older big dog Cali wines. (6414 views)
Tasted by SonnyChiba on 6/14/2014 & rated 94 points: The darkest wine of the night - very dark blackish/purple. Smelled fantastic, black currant, blueberry, a lot of tobacco. Very rich and heavy, this is the biggest wine of the night, and still heavy tannins. This will go the distance and was probably my 2nd favorite of the night. (2804 views)
Tasted by Pacalet on 9/19/2012 & rated 91 points: Very dark red color with slight brownish rim, mellowed down soft dark fruit nose with slight residual oak. Very ripe fruit and medium plus palate that is very pleasing and not a lot of depth. Very good 2nd wine and drinking very well. (5608 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 2/13/2012: This is one rich wine. Dense with fruit. Very youthful showing. With Laurent, Josh and Linda at Ciano. (5519 views)

Harlan Estate

Producer website - Read more about Harlan Estate

Harlan Estate was founded in 1984 by H. William Harlan with the vision to consistently produce a wine of the highest quality and great longevity from the estate – in essence, to create a “First Growth” of California. Each year, the wine of Harlan Estate strives to faithfully express the abiding character of the land, and the distinctive attributes of the vintage.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
