Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 52 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by M.Batard on 4/7/2023 & rated 91 points: Developing into a deeper gold color. Again, notes of peach, citrus, and slate. Seemed less sweet than I recall from earlier bottles, which was fine, but made me think the fruit may be fading too. Paired well with roast duck with Tamarind sauce at Origin Thai, (Basking Ridge) (545 views)
Tasted by chatters on 3/9/2023: Coravin fun - European Riesling (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Cream, peach, slight honey, a little mineral underpin, touch of spice. Very custard apple and ripe red apple on the palate with a creamy note. Off dry, generous without straying to the flabby, lovely (716 views)
Tasted by tantotinto on 1/18/2023 & rated 91 points: Rich and viscous. Apricot, Meyer Lemon and slate. Crisp acidity. (688 views)
Tasted by Domenick123 on 12/16/2022 & rated 94 points: Tart lemon-lime flavors, a really nice one (679 views)
Tasted by jkolb on 12/27/2021: For Eva’s 13th birthday.

Delicious. Everything we love about Donnhoff Spatlesen. More complexity with 1hr+ of air. Slightly short finish and ever-so-slight lack of acidity make me thing this should be drunk within the next few years. (1299 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 8/6/2021 & rated 94 points: From magnum, so it’s minor infanticide. Light gold color with no degradation. Oil fumes with underlying lemon-lime on the nose. Sweet lemon-like zest with petroleum notes. Really tasty. (1494 views)
 Tasted by berlinhotel on 6/25/2021 & rated 92 points: 92+ (1367 views)
Tasted by BillyRayValentine on 11/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Agree with flavor notes from Belissimo and Rossi. Exceptionally well balanced and complex long finish. I’m not sure this will improve, can hold for a while but there is no reason to wait. Paired well with Peruvian food and went down too easy. Wish I had more. (1371 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 4/25/2020: Bright golden in color, aromas leap out of the glass showing white flowers, tropical fruits and crushed rocks. On the palate, still good lift from the acidity, stone fruit, honey, tropical and citrus notes. Just a bit of oily viscosity and sense of sweetness.

Served with a chili glazed salmon meal and this absolutely cut through the heat. Strong recommendation. (1531 views)
Tasted by M.Batard on 3/7/2020 & rated 91 points: Still well balanced acidity and fruit—peach and citrus over stones. (1221 views)
Tasted by chatters on 1/18/2020: From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of marzipan, a touch of clay, muted fruit shows red apple and apricot underpinned by sulphur prickle and sweet spice. A sour lemon acid rather dominates the fruit sweetness here and the fruit is self is a little reticent. There is a tiny burr across the tongue. Bit short. Meh on this tasting. (1244 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 8/24/2019 & rated 92 points: Unfortunately my last bottle. Ripe stone fruit, honey, flowers, herbs and petrol on the nose. Lovely mouthfeel - rich, great concentration, excellent acidity and lots of minerality. Very vibrant, lifted and long. Drink or keep. 91-93 (1746 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 2/8/2019 & rated 93 points: Another great bottle - ripe yellow stone fruit, slight notes of honey, crushed stones, hints of exotic fruit, herbs. On the palate full of energy and lift, very mineral with lots of acidity. Great balance and length. Delicious. No rush drinking up. 92-94 (1646 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 9/15/2018 & rated 92 points: Very consistent with previous note. Lots of acidity, rather linear but absolutely delicious and vibrant. 91-93 (1746 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 5/19/2018 & rated 93 points: Yellow stone fruit, tropical and citrus fruit notes, crushed stones, herbs on the nose. Honeyed fruit on the palate, almost piercing acidity. Well balanced throughout with a bit of minerality towards the bright and vibrant finish. Delicious. 92-94 (2000 views)
Tasted by chatters on 7/1/2017: off dry but the acidity is very much freshining things up here…quite key lime pie with confectioners cream with a dollop of honey. Perhaps a little forward for what I expected though the cork was more than sound….I matched this (by necessity rather than choice) with a couple of rotisserice roast chicken, coleslaw and garlic aioli seedy sourdough rolls and the whole was bloody marvellous - the juxtaposition of the sourdough and sweetness, the clean sweep of the acidity against the fattiness of the chicken and the lime complimenting the aioli ennobled by the creamy texture of the wine and the mayonnaise was pretty special. What an unexpected and utterly enjoyable surprise. (2495 views)
Tasted by Stevelayden on 1/17/2017 & rated 91 points: From a magnum and it surprised me how advanced this was. If this was a blind tasting I would have guessed a 2000 or 2002. Still vibrant but most of the primary fruit had aged into it's secondary notes already. Dark golden color already as well. Lacking some of the prickly acidity that I associate with 2008.

Reminded me of how sad I am that Donnhoff parted ways with their Kupfergrube parcels as I really did enjoy these offerings quite a bit more than the Brucke or Felsenberg offerings. But they received more Hermannshohle in return, so a tactical move even if it did put an end to a uniquely beautiful piece of winemaking.

Delicious, but I'll probably pop my other bottle soon as I'm not sure it's keeping as well as expected. (3061 views)
Tasted by chatters on 7/20/2016: Tiny touch of frizzante on the palate but otherwise all that one would expect; length, abundant fruit, serene balance of acid and flavour. Positively evaporated with pork cutlets on a bed of fennel and apple. Yum (3156 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 1/22/2016 & rated 93 points: Another lovely bottle. Superbly balanced - so vibrant and full of energy. Sweet fruit, lots of acidity, mineral notes and a lingering, spicy finish. Drinking very well, but this will be great for years to come. 92-94 (3500 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 5/18/2015 & rated 92 points: Tropical fruit, yellow stone fruit, white flowers and minerality on the nose. Ripe fruit mixed with lime fruit on the palate, slightly sweet at first but there is lots of acidity. Wonderfully balanced. Mineral, precise, long. Delicious. Should evolve further. 91-92+ (3520 views)
Tasted by ekallio on 4/22/2015: Now I feel that this is as exciting as when it was really young - a seamless complexity that is now more seductive and less bursting with laser-like energy like before. Really excellent. (2797 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 1/17/2015 & rated 93 points: Impromptu dinner - 96 Krug, 02 Churchill, 02 Raveneau MdT, 67 Latour, 01 Mugnier Amoureuses & etc. (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Good mixture of fresh whiter fruits like pear and white peach with mouth-watering lemon curd. Excellent concentration, slightly fizzy, bright acidity, layered mineral and lovely sweet finish. Still a bit sweet. Simply delicious and yummy. Will improve. (3519 views)
Tasted by salil on 12/20/2013 & rated 91 points: Tightly coiled at first, there's a stony/dusty aroma over understated citrus and pear fruit, and rather restrained sweetness. Over a couple of hours it starts to open out aromatically, showing more fruit and mineral characteristics with bright acids and wonderful balance, but it always gives the impression that it's holding something in reserve and needs some more time. (3551 views)
Tasted by salil on 7/7/2013 & rated 91 points: I wasn't thrilled by this on release, but it's gotten a lot better in the last few years and it's drinking very nicely now, though still rather young with fresh pear, peach and citrus fruits gently accented with floral and mineral notes on a polished, medium weight frame. It doesn't have quite the complexity or depth of the Brücke or Hermannshöhle Spätlese, but the balance is lovely with a bright acid spine keeping it very lively and light on its feet, and good length. (3268 views)
Tasted by jasonbolton on 5/28/2013 & rated 91 points: delicious wine to be sure, but lacking a bit of expression. i'm guessing too young, awkward time. (2561 views)

Sommelier Journal, December 2009
(Dönnhoff Schlossböckelheimer Kupfergrube Riesling Spätlese, Nahe, Germany) This wine blew me away when I tasted it earlier this year. It is the perfect combination of balance, purity of fruit, and mineral depth. Because the 2008 vintage is much leaner than other recent years, the high acidity perfectly balances the residual sugar, allowing an arsenal of mineral and tertiary flavors to bounce off the clean and focused fruit. Truly a spellbinding wine. Sommelier's Choice: Top Releases of 2009

Dönnhoff

Producer website

U.S. Importer (add'l info)

As a help to those who purchase and cellar these wines, let it be noted that the 'Goldkapsule' does not ofen designate a higher quality bottling from the producer Dönnhoff. Herr Dönnhoff uses gold capsules on about 99 percent of the l bottlings of certain richer wines from the vineyards Oberhauser Brücke and Niederhauser Hermannshöhle and perhaps some others. Therefore it is usually unneccessary and misleading to use the term 'Goldkapsule' with Dönnhoff wines, currently. Although, just to be confusing, David Bueker mentions that there may be one or two exceptions, especially in 2001 and 2003 vintages, where Donnhoff produced "white capsule" auslesen from the Leistenberg and Dellchen vineyards (later Dellchen auslesen have gone to the gold capsules - e.g. 2006). To have to list my notes on a Cellartracker page that has a non-necessary and meaningless 'gold capsule' designation is highly irritating for me, as I feel that if I list it correctly it won't even be picked up by a search.

Another example of the confusion above is with the frequent multiple bottlings of Eisweine from the Brücke vineyard. There were at least three bottlings in 1998 and three in 2002. They occur when prolonged cold snaps allow harvesting on successive days. Usually one of these is designated the 'regular' Eiswein and the best one is sent to the Auction. Each typically has a different style. They are informally referred to by the day of the week on which they were harvested. Thus in 1998 there was a 'Samstag' Eiswein, and one for 'Sonntag' and also 'Montag'. The last named is extremely powerful, and extremely expensive; it is the Auction lot.

It is STRONGLY URGED then that when referring to Dönnhoff wines one refers to the AP number If this terminology is not used, identity can be impossible to determine. JHT

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Nahe
