Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.8 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SimonG on 1/13/2023 & rated 93 points: My 50th at the Ledbury (The Ledbury, London): Two halves, absolutely consistent. Mid to deep amber. Orange blossom, barley sugar and obvious botrytis on the nose. Still a good sense of sweetness on the attack, mid palate balanced with good acidity, and a positive mid length finish. **** (837 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 3/6/2021 & rated 93 points: Nose is pears poached with cloves, Seville orange, a touch of burnt sugar. Palate is lively, with good tension between the bitter orange marmalade/brûlée & the honeyed stonefruit. This is full maturity Sauternes, arrived at one of my favorite places for this style of wine without any varnish or other flaw. Had with ricotta gnocchi, sauteed asparagus, Reggiano in a lemon/vermouth cream sauce which was an adequate match. How this bottle ended up so delicious is a mystery. (1006 views)
Tasted by dream on 9/13/2019 & rated 93 points: This bottle was so perfectly mature with such delicate Sauternes notes of clove spice, dried apricot and crème brulee. Light and ethereal with a hauntingly complex finish which went so well with the Foi Gras. Hard to believe the quality from such a lost vintage. (1228 views)
Tasted by Margroot on 3/10/2018 & rated 93 points: Great dark orange golden color.
Sweet tones in de nose of some ripe fruit. In the mouth the orange zest bitters made it well balanced also because of the fresh acids from lime and orange were still very much present. Great wine! (1601 views)
 Tasted by europat55 on 9/21/2017 & rated 88 points: Nose: B++ Palate: B (1603 views)
Tasted by AMC Eagle on 4/4/2013 & rated 94 points: Dark golden brown; complex nose of very ripe tropical fruits, apricots, pears, and of course honey along with a light touch of acetone. The finish is medium-long with honeyed caramel, peaches, and ripe apricots; smooth. Good way to cap a night after dinner at the Buckhorn Exchange. (3579 views)
Tasted by Mackmoo on 2/23/2013 & rated 95 points: Light golden. Wonderful mature nose. Complex on the palate. Simply sublime! (3209 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 1/4/2013 flawed bottle: My 40th at The Ledbury (The Ledbury, London): Half. After a good and an excellent half of this, this one was spoilt by a huge dose of VA-like acetone. With vigorous aeration it did start to lift from the nose a bit, but the palate was still painfully acidic and completely unrepresentative of previous halves. (3529 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 4/9/2009: Half bottle. Good colour, lovely nose, all marmelade, a touch of botrytis and a hint of caramel. Sweet and smooth attack, beautfully balanced by fresh acidity. Good weight, medium sweetness. Long. Really lovely and excellent for a half of 73. Significantly better (especially in the balance) than previous half of this. ****1/2 (3416 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 3/14/2009: Half bottle. Good colour, holding up well, still reasonably sweet and vigorous, though obviously not as bright as the full bottle of 88 alongside. Pineapple fruit has given way to orange and marmelade, but the structure is good and it finishes resaonably positively. ***1/2 (3383 views)
Tasted by tim95030 on 5/1/2008 & rated 93 points: Wonderful nose full of honey, honeysuckle, vinyl or new GI Joe. Moderate Plus sweetness remaining where it is nicely sweet, but definitely not full on dessert sweetness. Meyer lemon notes on the palette with a long finish.

Tasted by wynnewood500 on 7/7/2007: Had a great bottle of the 1973 Coutet provided by a friend who purchased the wine at the winery in about 1976. It was moved about a bit over the years and never kept in ideal storage but was absolutely delicious tonight. A dark color, the wine had held onto its fruit well and smelled and tasted of apricots. Too bad there is no more where this came from. (2062 views)

Château Coutet

Producer website - Read more about Chateau Coutet

A prestigious 1er Cru Classé estate, Château Coutet is the oldest and largest property in Barsac. The estate has been owned by the Baly family since 1977. The name ‘Coutet’ is derived from the Gascon’s word for knife and the estate’s wines are renowned for their fresh ‘cutting’ acidity and crisp lively palate. Château Coutet has 35 hectares of vineyards planted to Sémillon (75%), Sauvignon Blanc (23%) and Muscadelle (2%). In their youth the wines show beguiling aromas of citrus, tropical fruits, white flowers, honey and ginger, revealing more candied fruit, gingerbread notes with age. The wine is matured in oak barriques for 18 months.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
