Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 51 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Snag One on 9/3/2014 & rated 89 points: This was an impressive wine and a great value. Good nose and nice layers of ripe fruit, toast and vanilla. Well integrated acidity and minerality. (373 views)
Tasted by bzukaitis on 10/26/2013: Last of 8 bottles. Sad I didn't but more at $17/bt (781 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 7/1/2013 & rated 93 points: Showing even better than the last time I had it. So poised, rich and classy; a velvety feel to it. This is one of those wines that begs the question 'why pay more'... (1013 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 1/12/2013: Belated New Years Celebration (Mark and Erica's - Roehampton): Love this producer and this wine. A stolid Syrah that isn't overdone, well knit and confident. Drinking perfectly and considering the peppery firmness on the long prominent finish, there's no rush. (1343 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 1/8/2013 & rated 91 points: Quite impressed with this. Not super fruit forward, but rather a bit aloof and showing backbone, almost dry. Lovely concentration, quite decadent. Excellent for the price. (1325 views)
Tasted by green-steve on 11/18/2012 & rated 88 points: This wine rocks - a great QPR. Blue fruits, spice, some "meatiness" - very nice. (1145 views)
Tasted by LFCHALA on 10/7/2012 & rated 85 points: Good flavors. But without strength and complexity. (1053 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 6/16/2012: Fat and rich. Yummy good. Like before. (960 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 3/3/2012: Scott Farm (965 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 2/2/2012: Had with pizza, didn't work. But still fabulous. Needs a couple of hours in the decanter. (1014 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 12/11/2011: Really is terrific wine, especially for the price. 91 (1266 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 11/29/2011 & rated 88 points: Good qpr. (1388 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 11/11/2011: This is on sale for $5 off a bottle at the LCBO so I bought 10. First time in a couple of months but this is as pleasing as ever. Really an unctuous, beautifully rich experience but not at all overdone. This is really starting to show some signs of maturity - the pepper notes are starting to deepen and are not as superficial as back when we first tasted. Really pulling together as great drink to sit around and sip. Will see how it pairs with a tomato based pasta. Solid wine with good interest. 91.

Note: Didn't perform so well with the pasta. (1366 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 11/11/2011: Kept going. (1405 views)
Tasted by bzukaitis on 11/10/2011 & rated 89 points: Drank with mustard rubbed, grilled rack of lamb on top of grilled tomato and polenta. Perfect match with the rare lamb. Glad to have 5 more to enjoy over the next year. (1347 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 9/17/2011 & rated 91 points: This drinks as well as wine twice its price. You could convince me this is Northern Rhone. Worth seeking out. (1413 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 7/22/2011: Really smoothing out. Thick but not syrupy, really quite a brute. There are some signs that this is actually Syrah. The immense alcohol is handled fairly well. 90+ (1556 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 6/13/2011 flawed bottle: This one was corky too. (1729 views)
Tasted by Montsant on 5/30/2011 & rated 88 points: This wine has gotten a bit one-dimensional, lots of blue fruit, some oak notes, but the typical Novy Syrah notes are not showing right now. Still a nice wine and great QPR. (1967 views)
Tasted by Tarrant on 5/28/2011 & rated 89 points: Very good, another example of LCBO alc. label conflict with the back stating 14.3%, the front indicating a whopping 15.7%, tough to believe as this was barely noticeable - Dark, full bodied with a nose of plum, blueberry, cherry, pepper and vanilla, nicely made and integrated, a touch simple, fruit forward style, sweet, smooth on the palate with very good length (89 Points). (1861 views)
Tasted by Gestalted on 5/17/2011 & rated 92 points: Wow, now this was a find! Smoky, peppery, Jammy fruit on the nose, midpalate is full and rich, finish is rich, jammy, lingering with touch of vanilla. This could actually pass for a Jaffurs, and for $18 a bottle, this is a great find.

Consumed at at cellar temp: 60°-65° F. Friends don't let friends drink red wine at room temp! (2126 views)
Tasted by lumpkins on 5/15/2011 & rated 90 points: indy dark with lots of blackberry & pepper notes. (2045 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 4/22/2011 flawed bottle: Scott Farm: The slightest bit of TCA but still enjoyable. (1964 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 4/11/2011 & rated 90 points: Problems pairing this with food (always do with Cali) but this was great - firmly Syrah, great concentration and smokey notes. 90+ (2001 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 4/3/2011: Staggering QPR. Buy. (2018 views)

(Novy Family Wines Syrah Napa Valley) Group's #8 (my #1) – 104 pts; 2, 2, 0, 0 - dark red violet color; tight but intriguing black fruit and tar nose with a touch of green peppercorn; nice, ripe and tasty blackbery, mulberry, berry and tar palate with good texture and balance; medium-plus finish (declassified Page Nord fruit, 70% from young vines and 30% from older vines near the river; Adam's #1 wine of the 10 at the tasting too, this will be a tremendous value at $20 or so on release)  93 points

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in over 100 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
