Tasted by davudvl on 5/15/2020: There was something off. Not terrible, but not very good either. Sweet aftertaste. Maybe opened too late. I have another one and will see if it’s the same. (594 views)
Tasted by bablues on 7/11/2019 & rated 92 points: Consistent with previous notes. (797 views)
Tasted by Dylan Tyler on 10/19/2018 & rated 92 points: last bottle. Sangiacomo was always my favorite Sojourn pinot. This one still had tons of fruit. Very soft on the palate. lucious attack and mid palate. long finish. Was afraid it would be over the hill but still lovely. Not as elegant as I remembered because it was very vibrant. (1085 views)
Tasted by Whine-oh on 9/21/2018 & rated 92 points: P n p. Soft new world Pinot. Red fruits on nose n palate. Alive and well. Not too complex but easy drinking alone and w grilled meat tonight. No need to hold, drink up and enjoy! (1118 views)
Tasted by bablues on 12/9/2017 & rated 92 points: 7th Annual Christmas dinner and cellar raid (Naperville, IL): Part of Christmas wine dinner and cellar raid and didn't take detailed notes. Sojourn delivers all the time and this was no exception. WAs the crowd fav of the flight (1604 views)
Tasted by JS199 on 12/23/2015 & rated 90 points: Unfortunately, this is too candied. Not much structure, disappointing. Nothing like the last bottle in October. (2707 views)
Tasted by JS199 on 10/11/2015 & rated 94 points: This bottle was just singing. Classic Sangiacomo funk, mushrooms, forest floor, herbs, not much pepper. Lots of unique flavors, I can't think of another Pinot that is similar. Absolutely delicious, 93/94 (2620 views)
Tasted by ljl203 on 3/28/2015 & rated 91 points: Cola cola cola. Soft hint of strawberry, honey , rhubarb but long middle of cool with integrated tannins, slight bitter finish. (2814 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 1/17/2015 flawed bottle: Popped this for my sister at her birthday party. I didn't taste anything this time vs my last note. The wine was tangy. I'm guessing it was flawed. (3034 views)
Tasted by danscellar on 11/27/2014 & rated 89 points: OK, maybe I am a bit tough because I am not usually a Pinot fan. But this is a nice spicy pinot with some nice red fruit to boot. (2720 views)
Tasted by brucerob on 11/6/2014 & rated 91 points: Drinking nicely now but fruit may be ready to go - drink up (1494 views)
Tasted by Pipcelot on 5/11/2014 & rated 92 points: Third time is the charm. Same flavors as previous reviews but congealing better with age. (2471 views)
Tasted by daniel.jay on 3/21/2014 & rated 92 points: Soft and supple, smooth, very easy drinking. Drank with no decant. Thought this opened quickly but started to lose its fruit at about 90 min. Drink now. (1994 views)
Tasted by wirelesswine on 2/23/2014 & rated 92 points: Great balance of new world pinot with a touch of old world earthiness and overall cohesiveness. Big on the cherry with a hint of spice, a very nice bottle. (2069 views)
Tasted by zinnut on 2/20/2014 & rated 94 points: This wine is in a great place. Perfect to drink now. Huge fruit profile of raspberry, cola, black tea. Very complex and utterly delicious. (1932 views)
Tasted by Wine Sparty on 1/24/2014 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured with spaghetti and meat sauce. Aroma has red cherry and some barnyard and slight cola. Taste has the cherry and bits of cola, but isn't a heavy cherry cola type pinot. This even had some black pepper going on. This is quite an interesting wine but may have too much of a CA style for some. A bit to much acidity on the finish - I'd be interested in seeing how it is in a couple years, but this was my last bottle. (1970 views)
Tasted by stevenjstein on 11/29/2013 & rated 91 points: Similar notes to previous bottle. Big, ripe, and not especially subtle, but tasty. (1572 views)
Tasted by CarpeVinum on 11/3/2013 & rated 93 points: Spectacular and evolved nicely since last tried. I think it drank beautifully. Can't imagine it getting any better. Suave and elegant. (1512 views)
Tasted by kennyd on 10/13/2013 & rated 94 points: SIMPLY AWESOME! A little like our 'Horns yesterday in the Cotton Bowl against Blow U! All kidding aside, this proved a theory of one of our wine country cru: buy all the Sojourn Sangiacomo you can find on release, lay it down for a couple of years, and then come back to it. Your efforts and patience will be well-rewarded. Nice job Craig and Erich! Thank you. Just wish I had more than one bottle of this vintage left in our cellar. (1606 views)
Tasted by ctjared on 9/18/2013: Consistent sojourn (1969 views)
Tasted by ScottGoodwin on 9/14/2013: Brighter red fruits. Medium weight. Darker red fruits. Chocolate. Candied fruits. Sweet fruits on the palate. A little minerally. (906 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 8/28/2013 & rated 89 points: We drank this at my daughter-in-laws birthday dinner in NYC. I was expected to be blown away, but after 3 years in my cellar, this can still use some time. Beautiful color when I poured the wine. Call it a sangria-ish. There was some acid, and a bit of heat in my mouth. I could taste spice, fruit, and cinnamon. This took 40 minutes to open up. I'd suggest a decant. I'll hold my other bottle for at least a year. (2122 views)
Tasted by stevenjstein on 7/18/2013 & rated 91 points: Big, ripe, dark red fruit. Fairly heavy-bodied for a Pinot, with a lush, silky, texture. Some spice notes and moderate acidity. Overall, not terribly complex or subtle, but pretty tasty. (1714 views)
Tasted by Mr.Overhill on 7/15/2013 & rated 90 points: Rich, deep pinot. Decant for a good three hours for the best results. (1564 views)

2008 Sojourn Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Vineyard

Producer fact sheet

This wine builds on the exceptional previous vintage, providing the same creamy texture and deep concentration, with rich fruit and spice components. Our 2008 Sangiacomo Vineyard Pinot noir is sourced from two distinct blocks within the vineyard located on Roberts Road at the western base of Sonoma Mountain. Climate is key to this vineyard's ability to produce noteworthy Pinot noir, and 2008 was no exception. Our most complete effort to date from this storied vineyard. 580 cases produced

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Sangiacomo Vineyard

Winemaker Notes:
Green Acres Hill
This vineyard is owned by the prominent wine growing family, the Sangiacomos, and is located in the Carneros appellation, which overlaps the Sonoma Coast appellation. This area is well suited for Chardonnay having both a cool climate and well-drained soils. The Green Acres Hill block was planted to the Sangiacomo Wente selection in 1991. The rocky, well-drained soils are reminiscent of those from Burgundy. The vigor of the vine is kept in check by the shallow, well-drained soils, which in turn maintains low yields. The vines yield less than 7 pounds per vine which is an extremely low yield for Chardonnay. This in turn makes for a very concentrated wine. The characteristics of the wine are concentrated tropical notes.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
