Tasted by cns on 3/23/2015 & rated 93 points: Ooohhh ... what a wonderful wine. Riesling at its best. This is both very dry and ever so slightly laced with a hint of sweetness ... almost teasingly so. It's aged enough so that the texture is slightly viscous and it retains enough acidity so it does not taste flabby, but lively and fresh.
This wine, with some slightly spicy food, is heavenly!!! (299 views)
Tasted by Nosey Nose on 1/6/2013: No real notes. This is pretty gorgeous now but has some life ahead of it. Lovely balance. (1313 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 1/5/2013 & rated 89 points: Beautifully mature and a bit reductive in the bouquet which also shows yellow fruits. On the palate ripe yellow fruits as well, a touch of sweetness. A very good wine and I am a Knoll fan, but one way or another this bottle did not really impress. 89 (55 views)
Tasted by mjfaulkner on 11/3/2012 & rated 92 points: Rich and full bodied. Decent minerality with a nice honeyed finish. Good qpr. (1158 views)
Tasted by cct on 2/29/2012 & rated 90 points: Almost a little green hue to the golden color. A touch fresher and cleaner than the gruner with more cut. Tons of stone- mineral, fresh lime, grapefruit, and citrus pith. Richly textured but with enough acid to keep it fresh. This has great impact on the palate, and when served a bit cooler shows better. Full bodied and it carries it well. This has a more-ish flavor and is quite long on the finish. 90pts (1574 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 7/2/2011 & rated 95 points: This is a glorious full throttle wine. Lovely golden color. Smells of stone fruits and minerals. In some ways this tastes like a dry dessert wine. Laser like acidity cleanses the palate beautifully. (1793 views)
Tasted by vespa110 on 3/2/2011 & rated 85 points: Giallo paglierino carico, naso fruttato giallo con note di fumè e minerali pocco accennati, leggero sentore lattico. Bocca fresca, sapida e chiusura leggermente pannosa come il naso. (1943 views)
Tasted by mdodd on 12/6/2010 & rated 91 points: good mineral (1273 views)
Tasted by wickedwax on 7/5/2010: aromas of lime, white peach and white flowers and strong chalky minerality that closed down after a couple of hours. taught and angular with tons of acidity, with a sheen texture and peach and tropical fruits on the palate. this one seems to be meant to go for the long haul and i'm sure it will be a beauty. i doubt i will open another bottle for at least 3-4 years. (1456 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 5/3/2009 & rated 97 points: A luminously vibrant, chalky, white-fruited beauty, cuts like a light saber and holds so much glistening metallic stoniness under the surface that the mouthfeel is downright gritty. This has exactly the same ingredients to it as the '88 and '94 Knolls we enjoyed recently at Seasonal which rendered everybody either totally speechless or unable to contain their enthusiasm. Smaragd

Wikipedia about Smaragd (german)

From what I understand, these wines (very ripe, dry, late-harvest, etc.) were going to be designated Honivogl (after a kind of bird found in or near the vineyards, meaning 'honey bird'. However, the Honivogl family was involved in the wine trade in Austria and objected that this would cause confusion and weakening of their trademark. Another creature was therefore selected (the green lizard called Smaragd) to be the mascot (sort of ) for this kind of wine in the Wachau.
