Tasted by Fftjr on 9/15/2022 & rated 94 points: Very well balanced. Lite tannins blackberry and cherry fruit. Last bottle. 😕 (871 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 8/24/2022 & rated 93 points: 2.5 years since my last bottle. This has great balance and finish. There’s still quite a bit of dried fruit hinting at its age. Hardly tertiary notes though. This is near or in its prime with a couple decades of enjoyability. Revisit 2030. (949 views)
Tasted by Fftjr on 7/15/2022 & rated 93 points: A bit brown around edges. Perfect cork. Perfect fill. Beautiful blended berry nose. Absolutely delicious, blackberry and cherry with well balanced tannins likely at its prime, not rolling over yet. (936 views)
Tasted by Fftjr on 2/18/2022 & rated 90 points: I’ve enjoyed on many occasions. Still enjoyable but losing a step. Had a heavy must nose which disapated quickly. (1145 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 1/31/2020: La Festa del Barolo Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): Another one of ours and it was drinking particularly well (although I was more partial to the Burlotto I think). I get sandalwood and maybe a hint of cinnamon and some red fruits in here. Interesting and a slightly different style than some others on the table, but it worked. Very well integrated and just overall in that perfect drinking spot which is always fun to find in a bottle. (2450 views)
Tasted by kenv on 12/3/2019: [Double-decanted at 10am.] Smelled great. Only a little sediment. (1969 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 11/28/2019 & rated 93 points: Needs a 5 hour decant and then this beauty is pure Barolo. Very smooth with a long finish that paired well with Thanksgiving dinner. Certainly in prime and will home for a decade plus. Revisit 2022 (1666 views)
Tasted by osordal on 8/22/2018 & rated 90 points: Decanted for two hours. Not too much primary fruits left. Cherries. Truffle, leather and licorice. Quite light and not so long lived and not very vibrant. Could be bottle variation as it seems over the top. (2214 views)
Tasted by acidqueen on 5/11/2018 & rated 95 points: Another great bottle. Still young and lots of time ahead, but is a pleasure to drink now. I recommend a long decant; give it at least 2-3 hours or more. Same notes as last time - starts out with earth, dust but then opens up to a sweet cherrry liqueur. Tannins are fine but still present, and they get firmer later in the bottle so more indication that time is required. I have 3 bottles left and will hold for a few years if I can resist. (2446 views)
Tasted by ShannonC on 12/26/2017: Upon opening the smell was a blast of chai/thanksgiving spice. The palate was green pepper. After an hour it settled to white pepper and sweet tabacco. Strong tannins. Very nice. (1971 views)
Tasted by christyler on 11/16/2017: Nice color. Showing its age but still dark and youthful. Nose is dark, tarry, grainy. Nice medium+ body. Again, very dark and chewy on the palate. Mostly really enjoyed this, but the tannins are too much. It seems to have the oomph to outlast the tannins, but for now they spoil the fun, at least for me. Also, I notice the 13.5% abv.

In a nutshell, strong showing but reminds me why I don’t have a ton of Barolo. (1983 views)
Tasted by JWG on 9/2/2017 & rated 95 points: A little less spectacular than the last bottle, but still delightful, wonderful, meaningful juice. Definitely peaking, so glad (in a sad way) that this is my last bottle. Nose of ripe nebbiolo with tar and cedar. Palate is dense, chewy, ripe fruit with dark chocolate underneath. The tannins are still there, but a little less aggresive than last bottle. (1956 views)
Tasted by JWG on 2/5/2017 & rated 97 points: Beautiful nose of ripe nebbiolo wafting out. Nose is huge, dark, tarry and earthy notes, with a background of violets and an aftermath of cedar. Palate is dense, chewy, ripe fruit with bittersweet chocolate underneath. The tannins kick in a little later and really take the tongue on a tingling trip. I'd say it is at its peak, so I'm going to use my last bottle this year sometime. (2312 views)
Tasted by acidqueen on 1/1/2016 & rated 94 points: Dark red. Beautiful and harmonious cherry liqueur, earth, tobacco. Tannins present but so fine that they did not impede the silky smoothness of this wine. This is drinking so nice right now, but still has years ahead. Excellent. (3426 views)
Tasted by HowardNZ on 6/28/2015: Ristorante Bovio, La Morra: But there was a big step up in quality with the Monprivato ... Deep but radiant ruby colour. An exquisite, multi-layered nose of red cherry liqueur, subtle five spices, dry underbrush, tobacco leaf and cooked meat juices. A lovely bouquet! On the palate, after a relatively sweet entry, there were layers of red berry fruit, cooked smokey meats, red liquorice and high cocoa chocolate. In fact, in some ways, the wine seemed more primary than the Azelia. Viscous and velvety in the mouth, the wine had serious fruit weight and dry extract. There were big tannins but they were fine grained and well integrated. Elegant and refined. The Monprivato paired beautifully with my duck cannelloni. The wine finished long, dry and savoury. I got the impression it was just reaching its drinking plateau now ... Excellent! (4261 views)
Tasted by JWG on 5/30/2013 & rated 96 points: This is extraordinary. Just opening the bottle has a bouquet of ripe nebbiolo wafting out. The actual nose is one of the great noses of barolo -- huge dark tarry and earthy notes, with a background of violets and an aftermath of cedar. Palate is dense, chewy, ripe fruit with bittersweet chocolate underneath. This develops into a long building up of a tannic aftermath that just keeps on going and slowly dissolves, leaving my mouth sated, happy, thrilled.
(Note: this bottle actually has "Monprivato" on it, so not sure if this wine is categorized correctly in my cellar. (5779 views)
Tasted by Docdave on 5/19/2012 & rated 92 points: Slow O for 7hrs. Nose was fantastic with notes of leather, meat and cranberry. On the palate, very nice structure with cherry and light mushroom hints. Long Barolo finish. Wish I had more than 1 bottle left (6873 views)
Tasted by BillB656 on 7/20/2011: #8070 Way more menthol and mint notes than I've ever had in a Monprivato. Fairly dominating and distracting really. Gritty, tannic structure. This is just an odd bottle and is from a different planet than the last two bottles of '95 I've had. (6412 views)
Tasted by antiwood on 5/6/2011: 1995 Barolo with Usual Suspects: Classic barolo aroma tar and roses .. broader/looser. Body is slightly less precise and definitely not as deep as the G. Conterno, but balanced, fragrant, mouthfilling, and ripe. This is extremely pleasurable and surprisingly mild mannered. Fairly mature but no hurry, I'm sure. (6634 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 4/12/2011 & rated 90 points: 1995: Barolo Retrospective (i Trulli, NYC): The nose showed cranberry, meaty broth, stone, minerals and something I can only describe as blood sausage. On the palate, I found a rich and dark expression of strawberry fruit and mushrooms that turned more angular and structured into the close with earthy notes. The finish was long with staying fruit, yet lacked dimension. (6308 views)
Tasted by salil on 10/31/2010 flawed bottle: Corked. (3972 views)
Tasted by markjanes on 7/13/2010: Relaxed dinner with old wine/anesthesia mentor (Reno, NV): Very light in color, very aromatic with loads of cranberry and barely ripe cherry aromas framed by flowers and tar/stoney minerality. On the palate very firm and focused and not yet showing its full potential. The next day the wine was amazing with any structural rough edges rounding out adding loads of depth of flavor and length of finish. Barely "outstanding" wine the first night that will one day be "extraordinary" based on what it was like on day 2. (4178 views)
Tasted by thomaskeil on 7/11/2010 & rated 92 points: Not decanted. Brownish orange-red not quite opaque. Enticing nose of crushed dried leaves, tar, anise with cherry-fig fruit. Enters palate with a precise sense of cherry fruit, an iron minerality with a firm texture. Fruit layers and penetrates with floral and earth notes emerging. Balanced tannins and acidity. Nice complexity, leans towards the feminine in its elegance. Good length. (3644 views)
Tasted by BillB656 on 11/12/2009: #8045/13568 You enter a room only to find that Kate Winslet has just left. What remains is this faint coyly seductive aroma of the most subtle, intoxicating perfume. Dried orange peel, dried violets, fennel, wild flowers notes that present themselves so wistfully. The presence is light, almost fleeting, with subtle flavors of dried and fresh cherries. The tannic grip is still fairly clenched which is seemingly at odds with the gentle nature the wine has presented so far. But that grip quickly gives way to a floral, cherry, acid-tinged finish. (3754 views)
Tasted by baroloboy55 on 5/29/2009: I had my long-suffering wife open this bottle late morning today, as she was staying home for some work and a rare Shabbat-Shavuot family dinner of brisket. When I got home around 630, I was anxious for the first pour. It had beautiful aromatic red cherry fruit with a distinct clay-soiled minerality, verging on but not quite reaching the geranium floral notes that typify this wine, rounding out to subtle inflections of anise, at times some fleeting, almost flinty or ferrous minerality, all bound together by an invigorating elevated alchohol, altogether a ripe, somewhat fleshy but very well balanced wine, the palate was still a little tight and showed moderate finish with still noticeable tannins. This wine has absolutely gorgeous aromatics and seems a smaller-scaled version of the otherworldly 85 Monprivato. Seemed surprisingly young and with a great future. Really special stuff, and perhaps more striking than when tried last fall. A beautiful, profound bottle.. (3975 views)

Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello

Producer Website

Praelum: “One of the last remaining traditional giants of Barolo. Old Botti ferments and ageing. Mauro took over in 1960 from his dad and is ranked amongst the greats of Conterno and Bartolo Mascarello. Rustic, powerful coming from the famous single vineyard of Monprivato in Castiglione Falleto.”

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
