Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 152 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bigbass250 on 3/31/2024: Had with Easter dinner casual mini meatloaf, potatoes and corn. A little rough at the open decent in the middle and ended with sediment. The 2000 we drank recently was better. (65 views)
Tasted by vespasian on 12/10/2023 & rated 93 points: Very impressive for the age - this has a great core of fruit still but has the lovely developed smoke and meatiness of fine Syrah; tannins fully resolved, perfectly delicious. We didn't decant (though there was a fine sediment) and the wine was still opening up as we finished the last glass. (397 views)
Tasted by Buddy318 on 9/10/2022 & rated 93 points: Still very good but likely not a lot of time left. Soft tannins and stone fruits (965 views)
Tasted by Grapetomeetyou on 5/1/2021: 2002 in 2021 still strong 2 hour decant (1673 views)
Tasted by RumRunner on 5/16/2020 & rated 96 points: Really nice now. Calm tannins and dried fruit flavors. Patience is rewarded. (2091 views)
Tasted by Enworb on 4/24/2020 & rated 90 points: Still very much alive with, imho, no need for further cellaring. Will drink my last bottle of the case before the year is out. (1981 views)
Tasted by pgm on 5/19/2019 & rated 94 points: Bright, dark, youthful looking purple, which was promising from the outset. Deep blackberry bramble leafy tea aromas and flavors. Some forestry woody notes, but not age-related. Still lots of ripe, persistent tannins yet to fully resolve. Very fine sediment. Can go another 5, even 10 years maybe. Excellent drinking right now. (2357 views)
Tasted by jhawkfan on 1/7/2018 & rated 89 points: Definitely past prime. Still nice but lacking the usual depth and finish. (2995 views)
Tasted by danscellar on 9/14/2015 & rated 91 points: Big, dark, inky!! Very nice nose, great complexity and structure! (5381 views)
Tasted by research1 on 8/24/2015 & rated 92 points: The wine looks inky colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, red currant, plum and fig. The body is medium/full. The wine has polished texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity. (5105 views)
Tasted by budman on 3/12/2015 & rated 92 points: Not even close to over the hill... yummy!!!! (5577 views)
Tasted by Coachron13 on 2/19/2015 & rated 92 points: An excellent syrah. Big and jammy, still well within its primary drinking window. Inky dark, big bold fruit. (5222 views)
Tasted by Julius Squeezer on 10/3/2014 & rated 93 points: Tremendously impressive on this night. Although the grip on this feels like many more years somehow I get the feeling it will never be better than it is right now. Love the blue fruit on this. This wine is starting to develop semi Cote Rotieish Port/fat notes which I find enchanting. Overall.... what an outstanding effort. (5669 views)
Tasted by Tarpon222 on 3/10/2014 & rated 92 points: Doesn't get much better than this. May go awhile longer but you will absolutely enjoy now (3572 views)
Tasted by SineQuaNon on 1/28/2014 & rated 92 points: Lovely, if still young wine. Rich with good syrah-character. Could use a bit more lift. Almost a 93. (3886 views)
Tasted by KristianT on 1/24/2014 & rated 93 points: Wow. Not very Shiraz like at all. Come across much younger than it is.will definitely develop or a decade or even more. The alcohol is a bit intrusive, but the total experience is very good. (3197 views)
Tasted by sraders on 7/10/2013 & rated 94 points: This vintage just keeps getting better and better. Great blend. (4196 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 3/12/2013 & rated 94 points: If you didn't think this wine was this good... you didn't wait long enough! I actually believe this hasn't peaked yet... but it is already incredible! (4109 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 9/26/2012 & rated 93 points: A remarkably potent and substantial wine. Spicy food doesn't stand up to it! (4576 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 5/20/2012 & rated 95 points: Deep, dark maroon color. Blackberries, smoked meat, black pepper, licorice, Asian spices, vanilla, dark chocolate, and fresh ground coffee on the very inviting and exotic nose. Medium to full body with fairly solid, ripe tannins and nice acidity. A big hit of berries on the palate then waves of savory elements grab the palate. Long, lingering finish with the spicy berries giving way to the dark chocolate and espresso. Outstanding! (4635 views)
Tasted by Colima74 on 5/9/2012 & rated 90 points: No mistaking this for anything but New World Syrah... big, juicy, almost sweet, but not. If anything since the last bottle, this has gotten bigger. Maybe a few more years resting would make this more to my liking. Or maybe not. Well made, but a style I don't have a hankering for anymore. At the Playground. (4558 views)
Tasted by llink on 3/30/2012: Popped and poured. Black as night. Deep earthy nose, showing smoked meat, white pepper, blackberry, and camphor notes. The palate is rich and spicy, with a heaviness that borders on being ponderous and a little cloying. The 20% petite syrah in the blend may be contributing to the muddled palate and lack of acidity or focus. Long finish, with a little heat. (4116 views)
Tasted by JOJ on 3/24/2012 & rated 93 points: Blackberry, boysenberry, camphor and wet rock on the nose. Palate really unfolded after several hours in the decanter. Juicy blackberries galore, with notes of anise and smoke. Decent acidity and chewy tannins. Still something of a beast at age 10 -- has a long life ahead of it. Paired well with a spicy bbq sauce. (3675 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 3/15/2012 & rated 93 points: No decant. (3339 views)
Tasted by Dr. Pato on 12/31/2011 & rated 93 points: White pepper and ripe dark fruit. Taste almost like a cab- syrah blend. There is some rich cassis as well. Has many years left. (3632 views)

Shafer

Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

Syrah Blend

The 2018 is 40% Merlot and 60% Syrah.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
