Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 80 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bcquinn on 12/22/2022 & rated 93 points: PnP. Delicious. Classic, mature meritage nose with a hint of meat from the Syrah. Tannins fully resolved but the fruit is still fresh. Wish I had a lot more of this. (286 views)
Tasted by wino121 on 11/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Vinturied into decant, consumed over several hours.
In a good spot now, mid life +, slight bricking, but other than that it’s great juice.
The Syrah is front and center with the cab adding slight tension.
I’d drink now thru 2022. (1025 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 5/27/2019 & rated 92 points: Similar tasting note to previous bottle. (1397 views)
Tasted by williamswhine on 5/31/2018 & rated 91 points: Inky hue. Mix of syrah, cabernet, and merlot. Oak, eucalyptus, dark fruit nose. Spice, dark fruit, nice structure, lighter finish than I remember. Perhaps a little past prime. Seems to be more medium bodied with medium finish. I liked it better the first go around. (1971 views)
Tasted by SeattlePaul on 5/18/2018: Delicious, big, fruity, enjoyable. Not too old as feared. (1768 views)
Tasted by Jack667 on 1/15/2016 & rated 92 points: Alec's Blend was one of my first wine loves as I got into it several years ago. It was always really, really big, but this '07 seems to have mellowed. I'm in aggreeance (Southern term) with Cuellarstyle on all but that my bottle seems to have medium acidity, to my taste. I might not be getting as much fruit either, and I'm certainly not getting all the smoke and leather that I used to get with Alec's blend. It seems much more balanced now, and not as much of a punch in the face. To me, that's a bit of a disappointment. To others, the more refined status of this is probably welcomed. Still a great bottle, though. Cheers! (3231 views)
Tasted by Cuellar's Cellar on 9/17/2015 & rated 93 points: A great bottle, and perfectly ready to drink.
The wine looks inky colored. The legs are medium. There is heavy sediment in the bottle. It smells like strawberry, blackberry and blueberry. It tastes like strawberry, blackberry, blueberry, cranberry and raspberry. The body is medium. The wine has silky texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. (2832 views)
Tasted by mdfuller on 5/15/2015: same as before - no change (2615 views)
Tasted by folsomarndt on 5/9/2015 & rated 92 points: Decanted for an hour. Big, delicious and food friendly Syrah blend. Good complexity and drinking nicely at this stage! (2256 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 3/20/2015 & rated 93 points: Delicious blackberry and cassis on the nose and palate with firm oak notes and long finish. Over oaked? Yes, but paired well with BBQ pulled pork! (2447 views)
Tasted by thelostverse on 11/16/2014 & rated 90 points: Opened at Anvil. Consistent with prior bottle, although there is no noticeable oak on this night. (1840 views)
Tasted by chiefilliniboy on 8/21/2014 & rated 87 points: sort of disappointed by the wine--perhaps waited to long to drink. great color--and had all the hallmarks, but it just sort of falls flat, and shallow. more of a disappointment than anything bad. (1974 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 6/6/2014 & rated 86 points: Inky color. Aromas of lavender, black fruit, spice and vanilla- wow there is a ton of oak in this wine (well, in most of the wines in this flight truthfully). Black fruit, vanilla and spice becoming more sour and ripe and it sits. Not my style of wine. Guessed Syrah. (2133 views)
Tasted by Superjack29 on 5/1/2014 & rated 92 points: Drinking nicely right now. (2122 views)
Tasted by Wino from Michigan on 3/9/2014 & rated 93 points: Drinking AMAZING right now -- great balance of fruit and structure. Loved it! (2162 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 12/11/2013 & rated 92 points: Still big. Still brooding. Has not lost a step. Drinking well and should cellar even longer. (2147 views)
Tasted by jjgallagher on 12/2/2013 & rated 93 points: The perfect wine for Thanksgiving, and the day after, and the day after that too!! (2030 views)
Tasted by thelostverse on 11/23/2013 & rated 90 points: Opened a day earlier, but holding well. Pepper and game notes with black fruits. This probably could use a few more years in the cellar. (1794 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 6/20/2013 & rated 91 points: Needs 1 hour of decanting. Big. (2388 views)
Tasted by Fraleigh on 5/10/2013 & rated 95 points: Great wine, decanted for 3 hours before drinking, spice was added to the full fruit flavor, didnt drink it with any food but it could have done a good steak great justice! (2332 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 4/12/2013 & rated 90 points: no notes. (2418 views)
Tasted by konadog on 4/2/2013 & rated 92 points: better on night 2 showing black fruit, brown sugar and some camphor notes. full bodied, rich. (2405 views)
Tasted by Surfdoc on 3/7/2013 & rated 90 points: Flavors of maraschino cherry, leather, eucalyptus, camphor, plum and smoky, toasted oak. Medium-full body and moderate tannins with some alcohol heat on the finish. Nice complexity of flavors but a bit too much oak for me. (2430 views)
Tasted by mdfuller on 2/24/2013 & rated 91 points: drank at dinner w/ '07 Hudson Syrah ... Alec was very good, but just not as enjoyable as the Hudson. Both are really well balanced and big mouthfuls of flavor. Really enjoyed both and they were a bit hit at the dinner ... both were preferred over Two Hands Syrah '07 (1771 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 9/23/2012 & rated 92 points: Decanting for 45 minutes is a must. This wine is rich and does not disappoint. (2272 views)

Syrah Blend

The 2018 is 40% Merlot and 60% Syrah.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
