Medium/dark ruby with tinge of purple.
Nose of strawberry, black cherry, anise. Nose is quite delicious.
On palate, black cherry and sour cherries, very slightly jammy, oak tannins, sort of tobacco and cigar box. Slightly hot. Decided to give it a little time out in the glass to aerate somewhat. Body is a bit thinner than I expected from the nose.
After a half hour, was a little less aggressive, though I notice the finish is quite short - tho tasty.
A good value, but I'd probably appreciate just a bit more ripe fruit body.
Postscript: An hour and a half later, this became really delicious. Still had a little bite on the tongue, but this actually improved the finish, which became more spicy and fruity. (4199 views) |
| Tasted by Rob MacKay on 10/12/2010 & rated 91 points: A stunningly good wine for $14. This 100% Carignane shows a unique nose of toasted coffee beans, new leather and some blackberry. Low acidity and some nice dark berry and plum elements on the nose with a slightly spicy note at midpalate. Very little tannic influence on the finish. Great both with and without food. I'll definitely add a few more bottles of this to the Italian rack of the cellar. (4262 views) |
| Tasted by InVinoMomentum on 3/3/2010 & rated 90 points: I was stunned by this 100% Carignano as I had relatively high expectations to begin with, and I wasn't disappointed. Great nose, somewhat unusual, bits of leather and well roasted espresso. A hint of dark fruit. On the palate this wine developes some wild fruit expressions without getting unbalanced. Hardly any tannins. Wine probably has 2 more years in it before reaching its absolute peak. Food pairing: any grilled meat will do - but I drank the Grotta Rossa by itself. Some cheese would've been welcome, but not necessary. Overall: great value for money, and the Carignano shows once more what a great variety it is. Looking forward to drinking the Rocca Rubia next before finally reaching the Terre Brune. (2875 views) |

| Tasted by docvin1107 on 12/3/2009 & rated 87 points: My first wine form this part of Italy and I am certain it will not be my last. Bright red fruit, light and smooth texture, the carignano variety showing almost "pinot noir"-ish or "gamay/beaujolais noveau"-ish characters - especially on the palate. Rather short finish and simple but should be a lovely summer wine to enjoy with friends in the garden. (2596 views) |
