Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by BordeauxSt.Louis on 1/26/2022: Drink it now.....offered a little cassis, earthy tones and tannins are GONE! Acidity is low. Color bricked out. Still an enjoyable bottle from the days of Warren. Purchased at winey. Impeccable cellared at 55 degrees. Cheers🍷 (1326 views)
Tasted by I1bearup on 11/13/2019 & rated 88 points: Meh. Mostly done and really not much excitment outta this one. (2326 views)
Tasted by eporres on 10/3/2018 & rated 94 points: Crushed its competition, a 2015 Realm Moonracer. Drank like a 10 year-old Cab, not 26. (2685 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 5/18/2018 & rated 90 points: Bring a Very Good Bottle (Kenwood Restaurant): Splash decanted. This was WAY more youthful than any of us predicted. It was also a big in your face Napa cab. (3397 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 5/17/2018 & rated 90 points: An Interesting Mix (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Very dark red color. Splash decant, drank 1 glass over an hour. This was interesting, licorice, heat, big, black raspberry liqueur and scorched earth on the nose. The palate has bold black fruits, black berries, black berry liqueur, chocolate, almost luxurious, oak, full body and good length. A bit bigger than expected,90-91pts, others may like this style more. (2760 views)
Tasted by wagonwine on 5/17/2018 & rated 90 points: Dried fruit and leather. Well past its prime. Some primal aromas and flavors came through with time, but the near complete lack of fruit, nuance, and energy left me wishing I had tasted this 10 years earlier. (3095 views)
Tasted by asteff on 5/1/2018 flawed bottle: At first, flavors were muted and felt corked. Some of the cardboard blew off and fruit came forward for some time, then it kind of plateaued and eventually tightened up again. While still drinkable, it wasn’t a stellar showing. (1703 views)
Tasted by Blake Brown on 12/20/2017: 1992 STAG`S LEAP WINE CELLARS FAY VINEYARD NAPA CABERNET SAUVIGNON- I remember buying one bottle of this and the 92` SLV and Cask 23 wines once released and the occasion presented itself to open this one and see if that was a good decision or not; it was a brilliant decision.

The colour was a medium hue of crimson; the nose, taste and mouthfeel components were strongly suggestive of elegance and finesse; this charming wine gave up aromas of plum and blackberry with mild accents of milk chocolate, talc and sandalwood; this is also pretty much what the taste revealed along with some blueberry; it was in perfect balance, had a smooth, silky texture, soft tannins and a medium weight thereby tenderly caressing the palate; I assume there is some Merlot in this and probably a touch of Petit Verdot as well, but the softness and velvety character says more Merlot complimenting some very mild Cab Sauv (750 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 3/27/2016 & rated 93 points: Quite enjoyable. Very soft with no hard edges and tannins completed melted away. Vibrant mouth coating fruit with some mature cabernet notes. Not overly complex. Feels light on its feet despite good viscosity. (2676 views)
Tasted by coremill on 10/10/2015 flawed bottle: Something wrong here, this had a distinct and off-putting plastic aroma and taste. (2915 views)
Tasted by RCS73 on 3/10/2014 & rated 92 points: Had a heavy funk upon first opening the wine, some concern ..

Did not decant. After time, the barnyard notes blew off and the wine improved dramatically. Nice and complex, tannins fully integrated

Holding up well after 20+ years (3587 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 9/6/2013 & rated 93 points: Garnet core with a bit of bricking, definitely an older wine. Aromas of herbs, tobacco, currants and dark fruit with a saline quality too. This is integrated and balanced, with very pretty red fruit and herb qualities. Lengthy finish. 93+ pts. (3731 views)
Tasted by goldgarf on 1/26/2013 & rated 87 points: A nice jammy cab, although a bit acidic. I was hoping for a bit more. (3648 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 10/6/2010 & rated 85 points: Group de Degustation Diner, Octobre 2010 (Chez Patrick, 26 Peel Street, Central, Hong Kong): Served blind with no indication of age or country of origin. Deep purple, nearly semi-translucent in colour. Lovely fully mature nose of mushroom, earth and wet bracken. Palate is very sharp, cold but exceptionally precise blackberry. Uncontrovertabally a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Bordeaux blend but a bit dilute and green. Thinking Bordeaux, this is a tart, well-made offering from a very wet year......guess is Cos D'Estournel 1991 (because it's not even as good as the 1994). The nose pulled this up into 85-point territory for me. Many may rightfully feel I have damned this wine with faint praise.....especially at one-third the price of the 1992 Cask 23. (3988 views)
Tasted by Gabegie on 8/14/2010 & rated 95 points: Delicious ripe cherry. (2342 views)
Tasted by eporres on 4/3/2010 & rated 92 points: Drink now for a trip down classic Napa Valley lane; toasted cherries, tannins good to go, and nod to Duke win same yr! Seriously, Stag is a great choice if you want to see the evolution of ~20yr or more Napa (Dominus terrific too), and prices these days are competitive for a touch of life. (3155 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 1/13/2010 & rated 90 points: WIML90

Tasted January 13, 2010 at an offline. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of char, dried herbs, light notes of espresso and some added notes of plums. Flavors of red currants, tart cherries and a little red berries. Light to medium acidity, somewhere between medium and integrated tannins, medium body. Dirnk now. (2706 views)
Tasted by eastover on 3/6/2009: Friday "Steakhouse Night" - Steaks on the grill, creamed spinach, hash browns and mushroom custard - with Lee and John - one of 3 1990"s Cabs (Stag's Leap Fay '92, Ferrari Carano Tresor '95 and Chateau Montelana '94). Stag's Leap good, not great - Montelana - clear wine of the night. (2930 views)
Tasted by dbg on 8/1/1997: superb, dark red, cherry, berry, leather, forest floor, hint of mint,
bit of cedar, medium to full bodied with most of the aromatic
components reinforced on the palate, moderately tannic finish (2741 views)

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars

Producer website
NOTE: This is easily confused with Stags' Leap Winery, but Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is a different winery. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is considered one of Napa Valley's first-growths. "We were founded by Warren Winiarski and his family in 1970 and are best known for our estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons — CASK 23, S.L.V., and FAY. Over the years, our wines have become some of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide. They are fashioned to express classic elegance, structure, and ageability, and to reflect the place in which they are grown." Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was known only in the Napa Valley until the now-famous 1976 Paris Tasting, when Winiarski's 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon, the first wine produced at the new winery, bested four top-ranked Bordeaux entries, including first-growths Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Haut-Brion. The tasting landed Stag's Leap Wine Cellars squarely among the ranks of the world's most noteworthy Cabernet producers and placed Winiarski among the ranks of world's most respected winemakers. It also fundamentally transformed how Californian wines were viewed worldwide [StagsLeap See details here].

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
