Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 391 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bon vivant on 4/21/2024: Sep 2019 Disgorgement, a fine bottle which is at a good place for current consumption. The style of the wines from this house has gotten more precise over the years which is also reflected in this base NV. More cut and structure and a little dryer and while this bottle had the advantage of a few extra years of cellar time I would recommend that this is one to drink before it gets too advanced. That said there is no particular rush as bottles of this disgorgement date should be in prime shape for another 2-3 years especially if you like your bubbles with a little rounding off due to aging. Solid grower juice. (79 views)
Tasted by Rixon on 1/21/2024 & rated 91 points: Inga noter. Men den pĺtagliga brödigheten har definitivt slipats av. I bra balans. Mycket bra. (550 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 1/6/2024 & rated 91 points: No formal notes taken but it was quite enjoyable and fresh and the bottle disappeared quickly. (483 views)
Tasted by Dulcie and Aylwin on 12/12/2023: Tart, orchard fruits, lush mouthfeel. (623 views)
Tasted by Peter Kleban on 1/2/2023: ***

Gorgeous! What a pleasant and interesting Champagne. Lovely mousse, long, delicate but strong palate. At once open but focussed Big hit!

Disgorgement 4/19/22. (1518 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 12/24/2022 & rated 89 points: Christmas eve bottle.
Very good with the cold starters tonight.
Apples, orchard fruit, lemons, still quite autolytic.
Good acidity and lift. (107 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 6/27/2022 & rated 92 points: This is the latest version of this wine. There is no degorgement information. Clear medium light yellow with huge mousse. Very approachable nose, green apple, lemon, yeast and pastry. Delicious and dry flavours and finish. (2064 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 4/24/2022: My last bottle of the June 2011 disgorgement. It was "misplaced" for a bit, so that I thought it was gone. Glad it was still there! It's certainly mature, and for some no doubt overly mature, but I love the nutty caramelly character, and it's still vibrant. Salty finish, and lingering nut/apple skin notes. Delicious. (2158 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 4/8/2022 & rated 89 points: P&P
Still young and has more to reveal.
Apples and bread, yeast, lemons, quite autolytic, some almonds and lemons on the finish. (81 views)
Tasted by jtdavidson on 2/11/2022 & rated 91 points: Pear, not too dry. (1965 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 1/7/2022 & rated 89 points: Nose with bread and bakers yeast and lots of apples.
Palate very much follows the nose.
Freshly baked bread, yeasty with yellow mashed apples, citrus, creamy with quite high acidity. (92 views)
Tasted by maderay on 1/1/2022 & rated 92 points: Apples, pears, toast (1992 views)
Tasted by Rixon on 12/27/2021 & rated 90 points: Samma noter som senast avseende brödigheten i denna cuvée. Men, den här gĺngen i pairing med kycklinglevermousse, fuet och Delice de Bourgogne och dĺ plötsligt flyger det pĺ ett annat sätt. Även nästa flaska kommer jag att inta med feta och proteinrika snacks. Mycket bra i sammanhanget. (1476 views)
Tasted by affordableCollector on 12/14/2021 & rated 90 points: white gold, in color. active bubble stream. apple, tangerine, lime, lemon, pear, bread dough, pastry, yeasty, cream, saline, sea shells, mineral. fine mousse, red apple, rich pastry cream, on the finish. (1194 views)
Tasted by Rixon on 12/5/2021 & rated 90 points: Väldigt ljust gul. (1017 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 11/24/2021: Clear light yellow, intense mousse. Great nose, bread dough, broth, lemon and pear. Dry orchard fruit flavours and a dry citrus finish. (1049 views)
Tasted by bergkamp10 on 11/12/2021 & rated 91 points: Brioche on the nose, with a touch of baked apple. Lush mouthfeel, with bread notes, baked fruits and hint of ginger spice with an almond note on the finish. On balance there’s plenty of fruit, acidity and freshness to generate a interesting package. Powerful stuff, and food friendly. The 11g of dosage shows and this not a racy champagne but it’s well balanced and worth considering.

Better on night two. Still fruit forward and powerful, but more harmonious. (804 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Monthly Tasting Group: Chardonnay (Oceanaire, Mpls, MN): Well this was dandy tonight. Loving the richness, deep apple and red fruits, yeasty, creamy palate, apple peel and steely minerality. I've has this a number of times and this was the best bottle yet. 91+pts. (1247 views)
Tasted by GTFreek on 9/12/2021: Delicious. Perfect middle of the road structure, strong fruit. (964 views)
Tasted by racerchris on 12/31/2020 & rated 91 points: June 17,2020 Disgorgement.
A little yeast on the nose. On the palate, tart and fruity attack followed by stone and mineral. Very dry. Lengthy finish. (1323 views)
Tasted by yaCellar on 12/31/2020 & rated 92 points: Light amber color. Seashells, sea salt, cold morning ocean air, funky hard cheese, light bread crust. Strikes at the front, wrapping around until finishing with light sweetness mid-palette. I’ve always enjoyed this grand cru grower bottling, and during a Champagne visit, found the family quite generous and welcoming. (1518 views)
Tasted by Château de Farmer on 12/26/2020 & rated 92 points: Wow, cannot believe I haven't pursued this before. Such creaminess in the texture. Gentle, tiny bubbles. Great value. (1234 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 11/27/2020 & rated 90 points: Yellow apple and pear with notes of lemon citrus and bready yeast, with a fine bubble and good acidity. This is a good value at about $45. (1378 views)

(NV Henri Billiot Brut Réserve) ($62.00) This 2/11 disgorgement is 50%’08 and 25% each ’07-’06; it is wincing from disgorgement and hard to read, as happened last year. It needs coaxing. The substance is clear from an Extra-Brut tasted alongside that had four months on the cork. Still, no NV Brut in all of Champagne has a better track record for excellence than this one.

Producer Website

N.V. H. Billiot Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Réserve

100% Grand Cru, particularly satisfying Pinot Noir here. Fresh, bracing red-grape Champagnes with long, swollen mid-palate flavors. Just 5 hectares in size, so availabilities are scarce! Billiot does not filter his wines, and they never undergo malolactic fermentation. That makes them very frisky and reductive when they’re first disgorged, and ccasionally a Billiot bottle will show a slightly metallic aroma for the first few minutes. That’s rare and nil if you hold the wines six months after disgorgement. Billiot seems to want liveliness most of all, as he can presume upon lavish and deep fruit flavors. If you know the wines of Egly-Ouriet (Billiot’s friend and neighbor) they couldn’t be more different.
Egly pulls you down into its mealy-ripe depths; Billiot lifts you up on a billowing fountain of fruit. His wines have marvelous stamina and brightness. They’re hedonistic but not sloppy. Too firm and impeccable to be sloppy!

Champagne Blend

"Champagne blend" is a classic grape blend that typically includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier in any proportions.

However, this blend can also include Arbane, Fromenteau (Pinot Gris), Petit Meslier and/or Pinot Blanc as well.

Le Champagne (Le comité interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne) | Grandes Marques & Maisons de Champagne (Union des Maisons de Champagne)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and A˙) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
