Château Boswell

Producer website

In 1979 Richard Thornton Boswell’s vision was to focus solely on the noble Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon varietal in his hand hewn stone winery nestled along the Silverado Trail in Saint Helena. Today our family, under the direction of Susan Boswell, continues those valiant efforts, though we have vastly diversified our portfolio to include wines from many of California’s most treasured vineyards in the Napa Valley for our Cabernet, the Russian River Valley for our Chardonnay and in Sta. Rita Hills for our Pinot Noir. Our pursuit remains true, to craft, quite simply, the greatest expression of terroir.

40 years ago, famed winemaker André Tchelistcheff graced our winery with his immense knowledge and directed our first efforts. It is with a great sense of history and continued quest for excellence that we continue on this path under the tutelage of winemaker Philippe Melka with Allison Nunnikhoven as assistant winemaker.

Our vineyard designated wines are true to their source with each of these wines being very limited in production with less than 350 cases per wine produced. We never lose sight of the fact that smaller lots equal higher quality no matter how tempting it may be to increase production to meet demand.

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
