Tasted by srwatters on 4/10/2024 & rated 95 points: Short decant to avoid any fine sediment (and the big chunks too). This wine is perfectly balanced and in a perfect place for enjoying with or without food. Tasted next to a 2007 Mayacamas Cabernet and both wines were spot on their home terroir. The Rubicon was classic Rutherford with soft and polished dusty tannin and perfectly balanced fruit and acidity. I love Rubicons at 15 or so years old. Drink up if you have them. (120 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 3/26/2024 & rated 91 points: a little hot (I usually try to keep my Cali cabs 2000 and before -- ie before everyone went crazy for hi sugar harvest, hi alcohol, in your face palate, etc) -- and a little dull on the palate... wasn't so much "in your face" as hot but with mild palate that was low to medium volume and four square (ie not elegant per se, and without palate complexity)... an interesting enigma for me for a post 2000 Cali cab... didn't perform to expectations sadly, but that happens (146 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Very dark red color, 2mm clear edge. PNP, drank a couple glass over 3 hours. Dried earth, cassis, black cherry, plum, crushed violets, with hints of blueberry on the nose. The palate is singing, cassis, licorice, tart juneberry , pencil, ultra fine tannins, and nice spices that linger on the finish. In fine form. (622 views)
Tasted by Oldworldvinofile on 10/21/2023: Excellent wine (560 views)
Tasted by BobKat Cellars on 8/15/2023 & rated 94 points: This wine is peaking now. Enjoy (758 views)

Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 12/26/2022 & rated 92 points: Big and full bodied but really showing the style of the time in a bad way. Loads of cassis and sweet vanilla. It’s dense, extracted and almost syrupy. Nonetheless it’s tasty for what it is. Still some structure here to make it longer. (1540 views)
Tasted by rpfaffjr on 10/31/2022 & rated 85 points: Flat, single-note, lacking any real complexity. The high alcohol stayed in front the entire time, which lasted over 2 hours, plus a 3 hour decant. Maybe a bad bottle? (1082 views)
Tasted by sonodoc on 9/28/2022 & rated 94 points: Very enjoyable! This wine is aging very gracefully. Soft tannins. Some black and dark red fruits still noticeable, with earthy, leather flavors added in, and smooth finish. Should still have a few good years left, but in a very good place right now. (1234 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 6/10/2022 & rated 94 points: It’s in a great drinking window

Black fruit, red fruit, blue fruit, graphite, cassis, chocolate, pepper, leather, tobacco, well balanced silky smooth. A (1391 views)
Tasted by Brent25 on 5/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Clear deep purple/garnet; clean pronounced nose of leather, barnyard, dried blackberries, balsamic and florality; dry; high acidity; medium plus tannins; high alcohol; full body; pronounced flavour intensity; palate is tarter with addition of coffee and tar; long finish; drink now or in another 5 to 10 years; soft, velvety and divine; tasted at winery cafe (1207 views)
Tasted by AnK33321 on 4/3/2022: Wow… what a wine. This is a great example of an excellent Rutherford wine. Big bold fruit flavor, round tannins, and lingering finish. This wine is outstanding right now but I would drink the ‘07 now before it is past it’s prime. (929 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 7/1/2021 & rated 94 points: Very dark red color. PNP, drank a couple glasses over 3 hours. 94%CS, 4%PV, 2% CF. I brought this to the lake to drink with my dad for his 90th birthday. Had this with some Akaushi Tenderloins on the grill & some sauteed morels that were all fantastic. The Rubicon did its job beautifully living up to it Bordeaux Blend heritage. Drinking really well, this had an inviting nose of dried earth, cassis, black cherry, fine pencil, and leather. The palate was suave and silky with classicly sleek dusty tannins and impeccable balance to the mix of dark fruits of cassis, blackberry, and black cherries; pencil, dried spice and a long satsfying finish. Drinking well, this should go another 10 years. Most mportantly, my Dad loved it (1811 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 6/12/2021 & rated 92 points: Black fruit, cassis, chocolate, cedar, leather and earthy notes. A/A- (1486 views)
Tasted by jimyeni on 5/10/2021 & rated 95 points: So good. So elegant and you can taste the age coming through. In a really good spot. Not a bruiser as you would expect from the vintage and what was popular back then but it bucks that trend with an elegant and restrained style. Super glad to have more bottles (1581 views)
Tasted by Jefferyist on 2/15/2021 & rated 95 points: Yum. Give it 15 mins to air out. Fresh blackberries on the nose, big bold red fruits, velvet tannins, low acid, med oak and med vanilla on the finish. Can sit for another two years but really good right now. I don't think much more can be gained from aging longer. (1658 views)
Tasted by bjwca on 11/6/2020 & rated 93 points: Strong oak flavor, with classic rutherford cab notes. Perfectly aged. (1762 views)
Tasted by robertgf on 11/5/2020 & rated 94 points: Rocknroller is being modest as this was his wine. It's a solid 94. Otherwise he's right on. Such a luscious big full bodied wine, that held up over time. Plenty of life ahead. (1175 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/4/2020 & rated 93 points: This is The End....The End My Friend (Home): VEry dark red color, no bricking. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 2 hours plus. This has that immediate sense of prestige and grace; fragrant on the nose, damp earth, pure cassis, dark red berries, flroal essence, and pencil notes. The palate is medium bodied plus, dark fruits, cassis, bright, mulberries, pencil, sleek and crisp, with silky tannins and a long finish. This stands out tonight. 93+ to 94pts. (1558 views)
Tasted by eags25fla on 8/15/2020 & rated 93 points: I've always found something very pleasing and comforting about Rubicon - a quintessential Napa Cab that shows power and elegance without being an over the top fruit & oak bomb. Nose of black currant, campfire smoke, sweet oak w/ touch of vanilla and a bit of tickle in the nose from the 14.5% alcohol. Black and dark fruits with gravel and anise on the finish, drying tannins that are well integrated. Drinking very well right now - an hour+ decant and can go for 2 - 3 more years before it starts to fade. (1118 views)
Tasted by NephroBoy on 8/12/2020 & rated 92 points: Decided to Coravin a glass to drink over 30 minutes because I felt thirsty. The wine still pours out a deep purple in color and there is minimal evidence of bricking. On the nose, I smell soft cedar and vanilla notes but the fruit is very muted. On the palate, it has a medium mouth-feel but is very soft and silky with minimal tannins. Again, an intense fruit profile is lacking while in the mouth as I pick up mainly rose pedal, hints of blueberry, and soft oak flavors. The wine is very easy to drink but I wish the fruit was slightly more intense. I can't see this getting better...drink up!!!! 91-92 points. (879 views)
Tasted by srshane on 7/18/2020 & rated 93 points: It needed two full hours to really open up. (735 views)
Tasted by jimyeni on 5/12/2020 & rated 95 points: Wonderful wine. Red cherry and I swear more of a strawberry component. Very well balanced, leaner for a Napa cab and elegant and silky. So yummy. Enjoyed quite a bit (1126 views)
Tasted by Tonythefish on 1/25/2020 & rated 92 points: See prior notes. Had with ribeye a couple years later. Still great after being opened for 40 minutes (1303 views)
Tasted by Tonythefish on 10/12/2019 & rated 94 points: See prior notes and similar to 2017 meal. Dark fruits and cassis, with light floral notes and some baking spice. Last 30-40 second finish (1369 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
