Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 69 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by burgburgburg on 3/9/2024 & rated 91 points: While the aromas may not be intensely pronounced, it still offers glimpses of ripe cherries, forest floor, and subtle spice. On the palate, this wine delivers a solid performance—good but not exceptional—with well-integrated fruit flavors. Although it falls short of greatness, it remains a commendable village-level wine, worthy of exploration and enjoyment. (286 views)
Tasted by Rechrom on 3/5/2024 & rated 92 points: Drinking well from my passive cellar, but starting to fade. Drink up. (339 views)
Tasted by gtonn on 11/9/2023 & rated 92 points: Beautiful. Truly (606 views)
Tasted by Winemaker51 on 8/3/2023 & rated 89 points: Yes, I drank a lot, and it was very quaffable. Was it complex and moderately ripe no. Could have some upside though. Red cherry and some earth and some sauvage ness if you let it air out. Would recommend a decant and slight chill. A very elegant style and tannins are in check. I’ve had better vintages of this amazing vineyard. (765 views)
Tasted by GuanYu on 2/28/2023 & rated 90 points: Redcurrant, plum, tobacco and earth. Concentrated and youthful. Hint of vegetal, and a little commercial. Plenty of aging potential. (1091 views)
Tasted by Genghis88 on 12/25/2022 & rated 91 points: Shortish decant
Translucent ruby in color
Medium-minus body
Faint nose. Iodine and some remnant of red fruit.
Thinning out for sure. Better consumed cellar temperature and with food at this point. Drink up.

Scratch Salmon Wellington for dinner. Perfect pairing. MERRY CHRISTMAS.... (1208 views)
Tasted by gtonn on 12/22/2022 & rated 95 points: Truly wonderful!
Garnet colored. Nose of bright red fruit, cherries and a touch of strawberry. The forest floor clearly comes through. Long finish.
Clearly has years ahead of it but drinking well. (1160 views)
Tasted by burgburgburg on 2/3/2022 & rated 91 points: Allowed around 1 hour of bottle breathing. Very ready now for an easy-drinking L'Enfant Jesus. Very fruity with good mineral and acidity. Moderate structural. Lovely effort. (1977 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 10/7/2021: My bottle shared with friends at an outdoor dinner in Minneapolis. Opened when we sat down at the table got around to this maybe after an hour of sitting open. Darker red fruits, baking spices, nice acids but still needs time or a good decant. Always a treat! (2209 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 10/7/2021 & rated 92 points: Still dining outside in MN October (St. Genevieve): Lots of red fruit, strawberry and raspberry. A touch of smoke, some floral elements and good acidity. (2156 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/7/2021 & rated 92 points: Mixed WTDS: AKA "Bring a Nice Bottle" (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN): Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 2 hours. As expected this took longer to evolve. Brooding at first with darker fruits, dark red fruits and black cherry, evolving slowly to show baking spices, underbrush, orange rind and mineral notes on a dense, layered more powerful frame. Very good and surely benefits from air right now. 92+ to 93pts. (2173 views)
Tasted by schan109 on 5/19/2021 & rated 93 points: Bottle breathe for 1 hour. Medium body. Nose with fruit and branches. The palate is integrated red fruit, red currant and wood. Some chinese herbs. Really to drink (not tight). Complex and long finishing. (2122 views)
Tasted by fmaldari@bigpond.net.au on 8/19/2020 & rated 94 points: Delightful , delicious and delectable - fine , balanced , great mouthfeel with a lot of moreishness about it (2305 views)
Tasted by sdchevs on 8/3/2020 & rated 91 points: 2008 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus. Mid ruby, amber edges; red fruit, cherries, red currant, mineral nose; mid body mid plus acids; still a little hard; long tight complex finish. 16.5 UC Davis scale, 91 other scales (1754 views)
Tasted by jbs712 on 8/1/2020 & rated 94 points: Drank over 3 days (Coravin). Nice balance and structure, with distinct notes of strawberry, raspberry and a touch of menthol. It’s in a really sweet spot right now, with still more upside. Excellent burgundy, particularly given the price point. (1801 views)
Tasted by Rechrom on 5/9/2020 & rated 93 points: A blast of bright fruit hit me as i was decanting this. After a double decant, bright fruit on the nose. A light and vibrant palate with cherry fruit and earthy notes. Clean finish. Not profound, but lovely. Has some tannins to resolve, god acidity, at the beginning of drinking curve is my guess but well wirth opening now. (2078 views)
Tasted by tak4 on 4/18/2020 & rated 90 points: Popped and consumed slowly over several hours after bottle had been open for an hour. Did not decant (maybe that is a mistake).

Fairly clear wine. Light color. Evolving towards brick-red.

On nose, red fruit, bit of smoke, and an earthiness which reminds me of cooked lamb.

On palate, that lovely smoky-tart Burgundian note really comes across. Still red fruit forward. Earthy-smoky finish.

Overall, a very nice wine! But for my money and palate I would have difficulty justifying this against, for example, the Aubert PN I had last night, or a Beaux Freres. But, as has been helpfully pointed out by others, I might be a philistine, so interpret my comments with the appropriate level of caution. (1894 views)
Tasted by Highlander on 4/16/2020: Just Lovely with a 3 hour double decant. in addition to the normal Pinot flavors, I got a some cedar and mild tobacco on the finish. I also tasted mild cherry and just a hint of lemon peel. Very complex, still has tannins to carry it a few more years. I would greatly contrast this with some of the American Pinots that (while being very tasty) are sweeter and somewhat cloudy. This is crystal clear and razor focused on the palate. (1444 views)
Tasted by JWG on 11/4/2019 & rated 93 points: A beautiful smooth bit of Burgundy. Incredible nose of floral, berries, fresh earth. Palate is soft and balanced, with good acidity. (1998 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 10/11/2019: Organised by 1855 The Bottle Shop & Vinicole Asia, presents Discovering The World of Pinot Noir. Speakers Jeannie Cho Lee, First Asian Master of Wine. Fresh, vibrant, youthful, red fruits. Medium acidity. 2008 is a good vintage for white Burgundy. Herbaceous. Owned by Henriot Champagne. (1305 views)
Tasted by scamhi on 7/23/2019: soft tannins and tart cherry fruit. lightweight and very drinkable (2164 views)
Tasted by Papies on 9/4/2018 & rated 91 points: Soft albeit a touch dry at times, or maybe lean is a better word which shows a bit of the 2008 vintage. Still a decent dose of oaky dynamic on the back ground but complementary to the wine. Good wine with decent length and healthy fruit just starting to show a secondary side. 90-91 (3308 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 6/5/2018: Good>Very good. Seemed more complete than the 2009 at this stage. Medium-bodied, subtle yet firm tannins, good, fresh acidity. Red fruited, this is chock full of forest, tea and sous bois notes. The finish is clean, of average length. I like this bottling as I find it to be consistently good at representing both the terroir and the vintage. That said, this was never striking, nor was it dull. I'll settle for pleasant, and a really good partner to food. Drink now or in mid-term. recommended

Double-decanter 4 hours prior to service, served non-blind. (4489 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 10/24/2017 & rated 91 points: Consistent notes - nice 1/2 bottle that delivers solid quality and experience. From 750ml I am sure this is still drinking young. The benefits of having multiple format sizes. Will hold my 750s for a few more years at least before pulling the corks. (4323 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 9/20/2017 & rated 91 points: Needs a few minutes to open up but a very nice burg here. From 1/2 bottle. Nice cherry and spice. Some wood on the palate but not overly done. Medium dark color. This is still quite primary even from 375ml. Nice texture with a rich and supple mouth feel. Think this can improve with further age. (3917 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
