Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 158 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by anstruletz on 4/8/2024: This was pretty good, but not for the price. Day 1 it only showed graphite, leather, earth, etc, with barely any fruit. Day 2 had a tiny bit of fruit, but I couldn't tell whether this needs more time, or if it's just not going to get there. (733 views)
Tasted by edjBoca on 3/9/2024 & rated 92 points: Still hugely tanic with a closed nose after a 90 minute decant....needs much more time. There is enough fruit to last 10 years. (1102 views)
Tasted by stayhappy21 on 3/8/2024 & rated 94 points: Tasted this at the Chateau Lagrange Wine Dinner with Mattieu Borders at Famous Treasure hosted by Infinite Supply.

An uplifting nose. Delivers pleasure on the nose and palate. Some oily brick wall notes. Ends with a tinge of mocha with caramel. (1151 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 2/20/2024 & rated 93 points: Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow": Pauillac and St. Julien (By me @ the factory): Uncorked the day before the tasting and double decanted approx. 3 hours prior to the tasting. The bouquet is still youthful and lactic with cherries, blackberries, blueberries and some marzipan. Same on the palate, beautiful cassis, oak, dark chocolate, beautiful and juicy acidity and round tannin with a good bite. Is still a bit too young, but already delicious. Try again around 2027. 92 – 93 (1495 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 2/6/2024: Ripe fruit and balanced. Fresh still, and with good power to it. (1919 views)
Tasted by Barolo Freak on 12/8/2023 & rated 90 points: I decanted and strained, and then I let it aerate for two hours. My initial reaction was not very good. The wine was locked up and unpleasant. On day two the wine had opened up considerably. It took on an entirely new dimension. It was very pleasing and had quite a bit of fruit. This was the last of three bottles that I purchased many years ago. I can't recall what I paid for them, but I can assure you that it was money well spent. (2155 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Commanderie de Bordeaux: Chateau Lagrange with Mathieu Bordes (Paris Dining Club, Mpls, MN): Very dar red/purple color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. CS75, M25. Ripe and very plush, layered and powerful, polished firm tannins, decadent, very primary, velvet texture, bold structure and a little volatility especially notable with food. I will take the '10 right now overthe '09 by a good margin. This needs a good bit of time 92(+?)pts. (2482 views)
Tasted by JChan on 10/20/2023 & rated 92 points: Pnp, Ripe sweet black fruits, full bodied, smooth and silky, drinking pleasantly, just a bit lack of aroma and finish. (2496 views)
Tasted by winecoffee on 9/26/2023 & rated 94 points: Infectious nose of mushrooms and blackberries. Beautiful palate. Slightly tart. Chocolaty. Voluptuous. Like watching a chocolate waterfall in the midst of damp earth with overpowering rain.

Reminds me of a DRC. 2009 Lagrange is that good!

Didn’t decant. (2314 views)
Tasted by BcDuncan on 8/28/2023 & rated 92 points: lovely smooth wine, displaying good fruit; it is ready to be enjoyed now (2606 views)
Tasted by zorglub123 on 8/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Nez assez doux, sur quelques épices. Toute aussi douce est l’attaque, qui enchaine sur une matière riche et profonde. Très grande persistance en bouche et d’un final long et tellement fin ! Extraordinaire cette année. Et le plus grand LAGRANGE que j’aie goûté. 92/97 (2150 views)
Tasted by Paul@bbott on 8/8/2023 & rated 91 points: Deep garnet, cool nose on opening, dark fruit and coconut. In the mouth it’s clean, not over ripe. After an hour hints of cedar emerge. Fairly long finish. This is a pleasant reasonably mature Bordeaux, but it lacks any complexity or excitement; none of the recent class of Batailley or funkiness of Pedesclaux. A bit disappointing, perhaps 91 points or ****-. Perhaps it still needs keeping. (2132 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 8/6/2023 & rated 89 points: Precis så bra som en bättre noname Bdx Superieure. Ingenting att skriva hem om. (2055 views)
Tasted by spillwine on 6/6/2023 & rated 90 points: Un peu déçu, un peu vert, je m'attendais à plus de matière. (2418 views)
Tasted by J'agnes on 6/3/2023 & rated 90 points: Good closure. Deep claret with a fairly indistinct nose. Palate packed plenty of fruit with surprisingly light tannins. Curious butterscotch taste in the mix palate. Possible slight flaw to this bottle or maybe the wine is in transition? First of a case of 12 received from bond and will maybe leave alone for another year. (2211 views)
Tasted by Krisbivin on 4/22/2023: Digg, klassisk bordaux stil… god frukt. Drukket sammen med Victor til entrecote (2611 views)
Tasted by Krisbivin on 4/22/2023 & rated 91 points: Digg, klassisk bordaux stil… god frukt. Drukket sammen med Victor til entrecote (2449 views)
Tasted by edjBoca on 4/12/2023 & rated 92 points: opens over 3 hours ....medium to light body. ready for the next few years...like many 2009 bordeaux, now is the time to enjoy warm fruit and some complexity and finish. A good if not great vintage ...heat of the vintage shows in the lighter fruit and the more red fruit to even this L bank wine....Enjoyable and elegant. (2581 views)
Tasted by Staufer on 4/1/2023 & rated 92 points: follow up to our last note from last year.. opened 3 hours ago.. tannins feel more integrated ..clearly improved (2279 views)
Tasted by tzelmer on 3/31/2023 & rated 95 points: Chateau Lagrange (St. Julien) visit with GM - dinner and tasting (Raleigh, NC): This is outstanding. Aromas and flavors of all the red and black fruits you can think of + slight cedar and dry earth notes on the finish. The concentration and definition are really impressive here. The broad mid-palate, silky tannins and impressive length just keep you coming back for more. This is the best Lagrange I have tasted. May not be a wine that lasts another 20 years but it sure is great right now. If you can get some you should try it. 95 now maybe 96 over the next 5 years and then will peak in my opinion. The 2010 is a very different wine but will live longer. (2750 views)
Tasted by stepchoihk on 2/12/2023 & rated 93 points: Can't go wrong with many reputable Bordeaux 2009 vintage. Great mid palate with great fruit forward with aromas depicting the hot vintage. Good QPR but isn't a keeper for the ages like many 2009. But is a crowd pleaser. (2030 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 1/16/2023 & rated 94 points: Tasted blind, this example of the 2009 Lagrange showed very similarly to my last encounter with this wine in 2020. This is really something - I love the vibrancy of the mixed berry fruit here, more red than black; there's a fine perfume, augmented by mineral and cedar. Really vivacious without any heaviness. 93-94 points (4019 views)
Tasted by Chimer on 12/26/2022 & rated 95 points: Colour still deep, fruit dark and young, packed with energy, still very youthful but tannins are integrated and approachable. Lovely black plum with super lift. (2506 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 12/18/2022 & rated 93 points: A nice juicy mouthful of sweet, ripe, round textured cassis, made even better by all the cedar, spice, espresso, flowers, and blackberries. Full-bodied, with soft, ripe tannins, and plenty of fruit in the mid-palate and finish, this has upped its game over the past few years. Drink from 2023-2045. (4240 views)
Tasted by Staufer on 11/16/2022 & rated 91 points: still young .. on the nose amazing .. vanilla, marzipan, berries ..on the palate still too many tanins and a bit tard ..if tannins improve wine could be a stunner (2964 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
