Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 151 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by platpeeps on 3/22/2024 & rated 93 points: Now showing at its peak this offered up an incredible flavour profile that almost exploded on the palate. There were notes of botrytis, honey, barley sugar, apricot, almonds and caramel. Rich and unctuous, there was sufficient acidity to cut through any cloying sweetness, so it remained fresh and lively right though to a very fine finish. At 15 years old this is now close to perfection, and in my book a very fine Sauternes. CHP 93 pts (781 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 1/19/2024 & rated 92 points: Honeyed and unctuous, there was grilled almond, apricot and barley sugar, kept in balance with a lively streak of acidity and freshness. The finish as would be expected was rich and lingering. Light on its feet, it never remotely cloyed. A delight. CHP 92 pts (1223 views)
Tasted by d'Yquembe Mutombo on 11/23/2023 & rated 90 points: From 375ml. Notably darker in color than the rest of my '09 Sauternes but still tasted young and fresh. Absolutely delicious profile of brulee vanilla sugar with loads of tropical fruit and just enough acidity to balance. Touch of baking spices and botrytis throughout. Paired perfectly with both the pumpkin pie and apple galette. This is an average-great sauternes and will stun the pants off of a casual wine drinker who has never tasted a proper desert wine before. Loved by all at the table. I'm never disappointed with this producer. (1208 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 11/5/2023 & rated 94 points: Lovely apricot, honey, balanced acidity, and long sweet finish (1452 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 10/25/2023 & rated 95 points: Deep yellow. Honey, sweet orange, tangerine and a super long sweet finish. (1525 views)
Tasted by Darbus123 on 6/23/2023 & rated 90 points: from half bottle. Golden colour, good acidity, strong flavours of honey and peach. Not especially long. Overall a nice wine, purchased for a very reasonable price. (1740 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 6/4/2023 & rated 89 points: Mid-yellow colour. The palate has flavours of lemon and honey; medium weight, with good acidity, not especially complex but with the potential to develop further. (1793 views)
Tasted by Swintonblade on 2/26/2023 & rated 88 points: Nice but as other notes say, somewhat simple with a slightly drying finish. Despite this still an enjoyable drink with apricot/peach/honey. (1848 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 1/13/2023 & rated 91 points: Tasty, good acidity, not very complex despite the vinatge. Will likely improve but just fine right now (3059 views)
Tasted by OmiyaDrinker on 1/1/2023 & rated 89 points: Xmas & New Year in Japan; 12/19/2022-1/6/2023 (Japan): This felt a little shallow and has perhaps regressed since the previous bottle 10 years ago. Fine but a little mediocre. (1988 views)
Tasted by franinnyc on 11/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Delicious after our thanksgiving dinner. What a bargain (1570 views)
Tasted by OenophilistMN on 11/17/2022 & rated 92 points: This time a .750. Similar profile as my notes of 6-24-2021 and 5-26-2022. (1051 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 11/5/2022 & rated 92 points: Deep golden color. Nose of dried apricots and peaches with a bit of creme brulee sugar crust, pineapple and honeysuckle. Similar flavors on the palate with lush stone and tropical fruit balanced out with high acidity. Mouthwatering sauternes that I think still has room to develop but just delicious now and paired great with some blue cheese and honey. (1541 views)
Tasted by OenophilistMN on 9/1/2022 & rated 92 points: Same profile as my notes of 5-26-2022 and 6-24-2021. (1024 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 6/8/2022 & rated 92 points: Showing a lot better than last time. Quite sweet but flavourwise ultra classic with saffron, orange, candied lemon, apples and marzipan. Pure without any burnt notes. Good acidity that balance the sugar. Quite energetic and not without grace. Very good lenght. Lovely! (2249 views)
Tasted by OenophilistMN on 5/26/2022 & rated 92 points: Identical serving conditions and rating as my note of 6/24/2021. (1998 views)
Tasted by AMC Eagle on 5/26/2022 & rated 90 points: Pnp and served chilled. Medium clear yellow-gold in colour. Nose of dried apricots with some honey and orange marmalade. On the palate, there are honeyed sweet peaches, brown sugar, and a touch of sweet tangerines. Light-medium bodied with a medium+ finish; a bit one dimensional though it is drinking well right now. (1935 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 5/15/2022: The nose on this at 37 degrees Fahrenheit—right out of the fridge—is from the most colorful and serene astrological plane. Kaleidoscopic, turning sweaty and dank before purring back to sultry angel food cake.

The honeyed palate features brown apple and pineapple. And its cloying intensity recommends big sniffs and tiny sips. (1988 views)
Tasted by Loathesome on 5/9/2022 & rated 92 points: An advanced golden colour and like so many 2009s there is an immediate rush of rich, voluptuous caramel, complex fruit flavours. A little restrained but the balance is excellent and all is in place for a long life. I cannot remember another vintage so well balanced since 1988. (1885 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 3/21/2022 & rated 90 points: Light gold colour; rich, honey and citrus flavours (lemon and a touch of orange); very pure and with just enough acidity to balance the sweetness. This is developing well and is now showing some maturity. (1911 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 11/19/2021 & rated 93 points: Prior bottle was 3 years and 4 months ago and the wine continues to show well. Orange, pineapple and honey notes on the nose. Between medium and full bodied with orange and pineapple the prominent fruit notes. Some light honey comes in towards the backside of the mid-body and there's very good density here overall. Tart citrus notes and acidity on the backside provide contrast and structure. The balance between fruit and structure notes continues to be a strength for this wine. Given how well the acidity has been retained since my last bottle and how well defined the fruit continues to be, this wine has a number of years ahead of it. I'll plan to open my next bottle in June/July 2022. (2441 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 7/27/2021 & rated 89 points: Light to medium yellow; the palate is medium weight at best, with honey, apricot and a hint of butterscotch; an engaging, elegant wine, which is pretty rather than profound. It may put on more weight over the next year or two. (2616 views)
Tasted by OenophilistMN on 6/24/2021 & rated 92 points: From a .375. Put in the refrigerator for one day, on ice for 2 hours and then opened and allowed to warm for 30 minutes. Beautiful golden honey color. No tartrate crystals. Nose was wonderful: citrus fruits, pineapple, caramel, dried apricots and almonds. Good weight and nice balance on the tongue. More apricot, pineapple, butterscotch and an almond finish that was moderately long. Wine had a great balance to keep all those sweet things in check. After the first sip, we skipped a sweet dessert and just had the restaurant bring us a wedge of blue cheese for afters. (2566 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 4/30/2021 & rated 90 points: Deepening color and palate. Some secondary notes with pineapple, mango and candied orange. Very pleasant and enjoyable. (2701 views)
Tasted by Front Royal on 3/23/2021 & rated 94 points: Absolutely luscious, but not in any ostentatious way. Balanced between sugar, acid, rich fruit, and botrytis complexity. Perfectly even throughout. This has been charming since the git go, and is in a perfect place right now. You don’t hold Doisy forever, you know. (2800 views)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
