Tasted by AboveAvgBro on 12/2/2023 & rated 90 points: 15 years and it is still going! It may be past it’s peak, but it still has vibrant acidity and lively fruit. Tannins are still there, though they have mostly resolved.

Old-world inspired, but still very much new world fruit. Raspberry & cherry, blackberry with aged salami with a finish of light white pepper and stewed fruit medley.

Overall still worth drinking given this particular bottle’s stellar storage conditions. Your mileage may vary. (151 views)
Tasted by Bwalter17 on 3/16/2021 & rated 91 points: Inky very dark red. Luscious nose with Plum, licorice, charcoal. Chewy and smooth in the mouth with blackberry, blood orange, slight heat on finish. Not terribly complex but enjoyable, and has a few more years left. (500 views)
Tasted by jbaron on 8/10/2019 & rated 92 points: Tasty. Kevin says “big and balanced” and would have given it a 94. (714 views)
Tasted by ey1294 on 3/30/2019 & rated 93 points: - Slow forming legs and aromas of blackberry, black currant, cherry and fig. It's balanced and has flavours of blackberry, cherry and black pepper with a full body. Smooth texture with a long finish - Decanted one hour. Big, food friendly Syrah. Delicious. Rich, black cherry finish. (760 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 12/27/2018: 12 Days of Christmas - 2018; 12/21/2018-1/1/2019 (NYC, Vermont, Lake Placid): Another fire pit wine. Popped and poured. Bought these back at release and have never tried, pleasantly surprised. I was expecting mor syrupy extraction from RRV, but this had dark fruit with lots of savory notes and black pepper, clearly new world but in balance. (1258 views)
Tasted by jbaron on 2/4/2018 & rated 93 points: Still takes time to open, maybe 45 minutes. Once accomplished, the wine is rich and quite fleshy and tasty, with both good earth and good fruit. The nose is good, the length is good; both are a bit short of the excellent showing of the mouth.

No telling what this wine will do in the future but it’s in no danger of turning downward. (956 views)
Tasted by leslievb on 1/14/2017 & rated 93 points: Love this wine. Silky mouth feel, great balance of fruit and minerality. (1514 views)
Tasted by ey1294 on 11/21/2016 & rated 94 points: - Brick color with slow forming legs and aromas of cherry, black currant, blackberry and smokey. It's in total harmony and has flavours of black currant, blackberry and cherry with a full body. Polished texture with a long finish - Decanted three hours. Big, rich French nose. Showing well now, can continue to cellar. (1503 views)
Tasted by drrobvino on 7/12/2016 & rated 91 points: Delicious RRV Syrah. No formal TN, but there was ample dark fruit profile (not overly fruity), some charred wood notes, peppery spice, and med acidity to support the longish finish. Nicely integrated, rounded tannins allow the wine to be enjoyed now through 2020. (1835 views)
Tasted by drrobvino on 1/1/2016 & rated 92 points: PnP- Enjoyed this wine while watching OSU put the thump on Notre Dame this afternoon.
Black as night at the core, fading to a med purple rim. Still looks painfully young.
Smells of black pepper, alcohol (heat), bacon fat, brussels sprouts, licorice, and smoked meat.
The palate shows a wine full in body, with flavors of tart black raspberry pie, smoked meat, peppery spice, and wet rocks.
There are fairly supple tannins showing good grip and structure, becoming more noticeable with air; med acidity, and a satisfying finish that puckers the mouth with black fruit and smoke flavors.
This is a very nice Syrah, well-made and bridled back from being a full-throttled bruiser. It is well balanced, shows nice complexity, and still has a lot in the tank. Drinks exceedingly well now, and will continue to do so through 2020. Delicious. (1542 views) (411 views)
Tasted by jbaron on 11/27/2015: Seems closed even after an hour of air. Big wine. Good fruit, long way to travel yet. Reticent nose, good mouth, excellent length.

Try the next one in, say, 2 years, late 2017...? (2140 views)
Tasted by nba1017 on 10/18/2015 & rated 94 points: Old school.

Black fruit and olives/cured meats on the nose. Definite bresaola notes. Little funk and shockingly easy drinking for 15.2% abv, with no obvious heat. Finish goes on for a good 30 seconds. Old world nose with a clean California palate of blackberries, currant, and smoky olives--think gin soaked anchovy olives. Awesome.

Pairing: soy/ginger/garlic/lime/chile marinated flank steak with honey ginger carrots. (2058 views)
Tasted by gesusser on 9/2/2015 & rated 92 points: 4years later this has smoothed out a bit: dark rich red:still has plenty of room to go (1542 views)
Tasted by clutj on 7/13/2015: Very rich and concentrated (1534 views)
Tasted by Spencer on 1/29/2014: Big and heady. Needs time. (2290 views)
Tasted by khmark7 on 4/6/2013 & rated 89 points: Concentrated, dark with white pepper and somewhat sharp tannins. You can smell the sweetness from the alcohol, but the high acidity keeps everything mostly balanced, but not perfect. This is a big wine, but an upfront red that would go well with juicy burgers rather than traditional southern Rhone style dishes. (2244 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 11/23/2012 & rated 90 points: Probably had a little too young - but wanted to have a go with some turkey and leftovers. This is a nice intense wine, medium bodeid but full of blackberry, currant and black cherry fruit. there are firm tannins and lots of acidity which hides the 15% alcohol very well. This does not veer to the jammy side (the dark side) but stays pretty nimble for a big tasting wine. Only complaint is that it does not have that much complexity. Very good none the less. (2498 views)
Tasted by brianngibson on 11/21/2012 & rated 93 points: Age has done this well. It was great all along, but I think it is in a special place. Great burst of pepper, game and smoke, but with beautiful dark fruit still present. (2362 views)
Tasted by davudvl on 10/21/2012 & rated 91 points: Smooth and balanced (2313 views)
Tasted by stbraunt on 8/25/2012 & rated 91 points: Decanted for an hour, but still very strong. A hint of sweetness and a thick, dark color and texture. Rich and delicious. (1808 views)
Tasted by St Paul on 12/26/2011 & rated 90 points: Coffee, Chocolate and fire. The alcohol is coming through in the aftertaste. Maybe it lacks a bit of fruit and balance to keep up with over 15% alcohol. Needs heavy food. (1961 views)
Tasted by gesusser on 10/27/2011 & rated 91 points: Tannic even after one hour decant; still very nice & got better as we opened a 2nd bottle; give it more time (1996 views)
Tasted by brianngibson on 7/13/2011 & rated 91 points: Meat, smoke, and earth. Excellent. (2123 views)
Tasted by stantheman on 2/16/2011 & rated 92 points: This was not a huge as I anticipated, but was still wonderfully balanced and rich and delicious. (2067 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
