Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 10/22/2018 & rated 91 points: Prior bottle was a bit over 10 months ago and this bottle probably showed the best of my original four. More black cherry (as opposed to red) on the nose this time, mixed with mineral qualities, some light earthiness and a touch of vanilla. Remains medium bodied, but black cherry being the dominant upfront note with some brighter, lighter red cherry qualities behind. Mid-body showed some very nice mineral qualities, good acidity and fine grained tannins. Blind, I still don't think I would peg this as a Rhone, but the fruit and structure notes felt more in balance here than they have in any of my prior bottles. The fruit notes shine through while the tannins and acidity provide structure and tartness, especially towards the backside, but without an overly drying or harsh, astringent notes. Drank upon opening and over the course of the next three hours, I felt it showed better like this than letting it breathe. Given how the various elements showed tonight, it does have the possibility of future improvement and while it will never be a blockbuster (despite the 15% ABV), as it continues to integrate, it should show all its elements to better overall effect.  Tasted by Doctor Koulodare on 7/8/2018 & rated 94 points: Now 10 years old, this lovely Chateauneuf-du-Pape has raisin and plum notes, with the camphor olive hints of the appellation. The tannins have mellowed, but they are there, complementing the sweet spice and jammy notes. (2029 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 12/5/2017 & rated 90 points: Prior bottle was just over a year ago and this time, it showed a bit better. Red cherry and mineral notes on the nose. Medium bodied and very soft and open upfront with red cherry and some brighter red berry notes upfront. Rounds out a bit through the middle before adding some structure on the backside. Tannins provide a good backbone, but were more in balance than previously and the oak was better integrated. Mineral, earth and tobacco notes on the finish. Accessible within a half hour of opening and I thought it actually showed better initially as the longer it was open, the more the tannins and oak became dominant. Still not particularly impressed with this wine as it lacks the power and complexity that I'd expect from a CdP. However, my mistake last time was clearly letting it stand open too long. This isn't fading or drying out as it clearly has enough back-end structure and front-end fruit to last, but just not sure that patience will be rewarded with something considerably more than what you have today. I will probably drink my last bottle within the next year. (2290 views)
Tasted by pipetree on 3/23/2017: Blind2: semi-lucent ruby with a brownish tint and sediment, petrol like, strawberry, seed oil, alcohol on the nose: medium acidity, dry, medium furry tannin, medium alcohol, medium+ body. oky, Boxwood. Okay finish. (3036 views)
Tasted by WineCPA on 1/3/2017 & rated 88 points: Very structured and full of red berry on the palate. Unremarkable. (3261 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 11/18/2016 & rated 90 points: Red cherry and earthy notes on the nose. Medium bodied and 15% ABV. Even after being open for several hours, this wine remained very rough and disjointed upon entry. Rough, harsh, unbalanced tannins and woodsey notes upfront, but behind was a very pretty, nearly elegant wine showing blackberry, red cherry and adding currant, tobacco and earth on the back. Overall, this wine was softer and more refined that what I'm used to for this region. It lacked power and perhaps complexity. The mid-body into the finish were very nice, but don't make up for the problems upfront. I try my next bottle in about a year and see where we go from here. (2114 views)
Tasted by blakel on 9/9/2016: This was very disappointing... Just a run-of-the-mill Rhone red. If I had to rate it I would say 88 but maybe it was flawed so I won't give it a score. (1902 views)
Tasted by beatles on 4/1/2016 & rated 91 points: light, elegant - and a point to drink now, best after some air. While this is not your blockbuster gôut americain neuf, it has lots of local feel with garrigue and red fruit galore - it reminds me of the VJ of old, when the domaine was less hyped and ambitious. Will keep 5 years easily. (2467 views)
Tasted by ebpayne on 2/9/2016 & rated 91 points: Nearly black. Dense, firm, high in acid, and tannic. Dark fruits. Improved and opened up over a couple of hours. This one has a lot of life left. (2009 views)
Tasted by kylerogers on 12/24/2015: Nose: Black currant, tons of eucalyptus, leather

Palate: Black currant, blackberry, tobacco, old leather (1499 views)
Tasted by wirelesswine on 11/8/2014: Really enjoyed this but no formal notes or score. (2592 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 8/12/2014 & rated 90 points: Light in color showing floral and cherry notes with freshness. The light, elegant textures serve up an easy to drink wine that will be best in its youth. (3014 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 7/22/2014 & rated 92 points: Plum and cherry on the nose. Nearly full bodied and very soft and open at first, but strong tannins on the finish. Plum and blackberry upfront backed with raisin and spice on the finish. Still very tight at this time, but should open up and shows quite a bit of promise. (2105 views)
Tasted by ddahl on 4/13/2014 & rated 95 points: Excellent and true chateauneuf du pape. Smooth fruit and balance. (2501 views)
Tasted by cr84 on 4/21/2013 & rated 92 points: Is 2008 supposed to be a weak vintage? Well, this Chateauneuf du Pape doesn’t care as it’s nothing short of very well made. Having this modern, elegant, and feminine mouth which defined all the wines I’ve tasted from this estate, this Vieille Julienne 2008 shows a nice, not that evolved, nose. Then, well, it’s a delicate, soft, experience that unfolds on some fresh red berries, red currant and some bits of pepper. Similarly to the Combes des Fous 2008, the tannins here are hidden, melting.

I loved how Jean Paul Daumen worked on having a superbly delicate mouth, elegantly displaying its stuff.

A solid 92 pointer. (3353 views)

Over the last decade, Jean-Paul Daumen, proprietor/winemaker at Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, has emerged as one of France’s most compelling wine producers. He is a driven man that will sacrifice anything for quality in his wines. For example, in the rain soaked 2002 vintage he harvested only 50% of the crop, and then rejected half of that. One-fourth of a crop does not make economic sense, but Jean-Paul has his eye on a much longer-term goal. All his wines are labours of love.

Jean-Paul farms 10 hectares in Northern Chateauneuf-du-Pape and 5 hectares in Cotes du Rhone “lieu-dit Clavin” for Vieille Julienne, including the ancient vines his family planted at the turn of the century– all biodynamically. Daumen’s winemaking philosophies are remarkably simple – old vines, tiny yields of around 20 hectoliters per hectare, no SO2 during vinification, aging in neutral tanks or wood, and bottling without fining or filtration — and they combine to give Vieille Julienne’s wines their distinctive character.

“I strive to find the best practices rather than set myself a goal in terms of a finished product. All of my decisions are made for the future. What motivates me is to install our wines in the long run, even if the path is longer, more complicated and difficult.

We have the distinction of being located exclusively on terraces in the northern part of the appellation Châteauneuf du Pape and this site provides freshness, balance, depth and minerality naturally- from there one must understand and respect the context of the vintage. This is important if one seeks the right balance.” -Jean-Paul Daumen

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
