Tasted by Castle Peak on 1/19/2024 & rated 94 points: Ageless! Drinking beautifully. Elegant power!!! (498 views)
Tasted by Winowhyno on 9/10/2023 & rated 94 points: Cellared since 2010....worth the wait. (893 views)
Tasted by tedcholl on 7/30/2023 & rated 93 points: A big, bold wine ,75% Syrah, 25% Petite Syrah , 15.6% abv. A commanding presence, very rich and concentrated dark fruits, blackberry plum blueberry. Lots of spice, cinnamon, baking spices. This 2008 seems to be on it's downward descent after recently peaking. Long finish. Wonderful nose (886 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 6/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Found this to be delicious and not at all on the decline. Paired with duck. Full bodied - but not teeth staining - new world syrah that is smooth and complex. (1126 views)
Tasted by tedcholl on 4/17/2023 & rated 94 points: Having recently drank this vintage I gave it a 2 hr decant which wasn't enough. This wine really evolved over the time it was open. Incredible wine, rich flavors, blackberry pepper raspberry leather blueberry . Great balance and a long finish. (1301 views)
Tasted by Montana on 3/21/2023 & rated 93 points: This was an almost overpowering bottle of wine. Extraordinarily rich and powerful. Great legs, great fruit forward taste and very long on the palate. (1108 views)
Tasted by tedcholl on 2/26/2023 & rated 97 points: Drank this incredible wine during a visit by my sister and brother in law. Named #1 by Wine Spectator in 2012. 15 yr old and in perfect drinking condition. 75% Syrah, 25% Petite Sirah. Perfectly balanced, very long persistence on the palate, intense rich aromas and flavors, and incredible complexity. Brother-in-law said best wine he's ever drank. What a treat. Wine of the visit. (937 views)
Tasted by novie1234 on 2/18/2023 & rated 91 points: Good, not great. Definitely not as great as a few years back. (879 views)
Tasted by mowtod on 2/12/2023 & rated 89 points: Still good drink up (856 views)
Tasted by pmk on 1/9/2023 & rated 90 points: fruity but overpowered by spice and toast - prefer others (848 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 12/17/2022 & rated 95 points: Still purple color. Blackberries, black cherries, chocolate and hints of floral in the nose. Deep, concentrated fruit in the flavor, black cherries, black raspberries and spice notes in the flavor. Full bodied, complex, very well balanced and a long smooth finish. (258 views)
Tasted by AMG4RPM on 12/17/2022 & rated 95 points: Drinking beautifully right now but likely has years to go. Richness and delightful. (727 views)
Tasted by tfesmgk on 9/26/2022 & rated 95 points: Even better with age. And even better the next day. Lots of dark fruit with the petit Sirah bite. Drinking great. (1174 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 5/23/2022 & rated 93 points: Deep saturated purple color. Inky, ripe red and dark fruits with sweet, white oak and firm tannins. Still drinking quite young with pretty strawberry flavors and has a lovely mouthfeel. The big inky nose contrasts the smooth, enjoyable palate.

p.s. leftovers (1640 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 2/25/2022 & rated 94 points: Delicious. Buy/drink (1812 views)
Tasted by culater on 9/12/2021 & rated 94 points: Still at peak IMHO. Decant from bottle into glass. 18C, Reidel Syrah glas. (2443 views)
Tasted by Uncle John on 8/28/2021 & rated 93 points: Beautiful but could use a decant for sediment. (2252 views)
Tasted by Les Kangas on 5/6/2021 & rated 97 points: Wow, what a different a few years makes with this wine. We had two bottles over the years and our last last night. You have to like Petite Syrah or this will be overwhelming to you. Reidel Syrah glass with bbq steak. I think it’s at its peak, as it was best after 1/2 hour and was not as good an hour after that. (2467 views)
Tasted by Bozekt on 1/5/2021 & rated 95 points: Deep violet color with slight garnet rim, fabulous nose of black fruits, dried rosemary and thyme, camphor, black pepper, and a slight hint of roasted game. Complex and silky palate - again, blackberries and black plum gave way to herbs de Provence, game, black pepper, and just the right amount of oak. Structure was amazing - moderate, yet silky tannin, acidity was med, full body, and long, smooth, and complex finish. Just a touch hot, but awesome nonetheless! Drink or hold up to 3-4 more years. (2671 views)
Tasted by culater on 11/27/2020 & rated 94 points: Coravin: like a very good Bdx in its structure. Normal new world shiraz taste n nose.

No Need to decant. Perfect now. Match with red heavy meat. (2408 views)
Tasted by WineCPA on 9/7/2020 & rated 95 points: Huge black and blue fruits. Tannins are integrating. Smoothing out with a decant. Drinks very well now. Can't see tremendous improvement so will drink my last by 2024. Great finish that's not hot at all. Plum, leather, bittersweet chocolate. (2420 views)
Tasted by pgm on 8/31/2020 & rated 94 points: Awesome nose, rich smoked meats, blackberry and cassis, classic syrah profile, with lifted bright orange peel and rose floral notes. One that you just want to sniff at for an hour.

In the mouth, it a big dense ball of flavors, needs some time to unravel. So sniff it a few hours before you drink, but with a decant, this is pretty much ready to go. (2369 views)
Tasted by Quarked on 7/29/2020 & rated 94 points: Reminded me of the Penfolds St. Henri - a deep, powerful syrah with real complexity and not overpowered by oak. Great wine! (2060 views)
Tasted by Montana on 7/23/2020 & rated 95 points: A powerful, deep rich wine still with plenty of tannin. Think it will be drinking well for several more years. (1692 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 4/12/2020 & rated 97 points: Coravined glasses last night and tonight. Dark red to purple. Big nose of spice, pepper, and blackberries. Still has big time tannins, balanced oak, blackberries, hint of blueberry and cherry but the blackberries dominate, and a long and pleasant finish. (2283 views)

Shafer

Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

2008 Shafer Relentless

maker's notes: The 2008 is like midnight in a glass. With abundant aromas and flavors of juicy purple fruit, smoked meat, spice, smoke, black plums and berry, it hugs the line between extract and elegance. In the mouth it's full and seamless from first taste through the long finish

Syrah Blend

The 2018 is 40% Merlot and 60% Syrah.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
