Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 7/10/2015 flawed bottle: Another warning for leaving too little wine in the bottle after using the Coravin. Was tapped multiple times, and I think that let to the oxidation. No score. (915 views)
Tasted by PopularCar on 7/5/2015 & rated 95 points: I'm holding my other bottles for another 2-3 years as the secondary favors are starting to emerge. This bottle was fantastic and worthy of the high praise. (1036 views)
Tasted by dedwards on 7/1/2015: still great and powerful (1043 views)
Tasted by Americana on 5/29/2015 & rated 94 points: Outstanding. Strong fruit on nose. Needs time to open up. (1500 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 5/23/2015 & rated 98 points: Wow! Retasted from the bottle that was opened by Coravin 6 weeks ago. Still wonderful. This is good stuff ! Sad to see the price going a little crazy after all of the positive press. (1425 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 5/22/2015 & rated 97 points: Coravin - consistent notes (1276 views)
Tasted by wetlandwino on 5/1/2015 & rated 91 points: Lovely wine overall. (1456 views)
Tasted by blakeangove on 4/28/2015 & rated 93 points: Well worth the wait. Full but light enough, like an offensive lineman. Dark fruit and secondaries starting to emerge, long finish. Drink or hold. (1571 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 4/22/2015 & rated 97 points: Consistent notes. Gorgeous blue fruit. WOTY worthy considering the reasonable release price. Hold for 3-5 years. (1460 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 4/13/2015 & rated 97 points: Graphite, lead, mineral, silky tannins, dark blue fruit, SOOO different than the Cayuse we're comparing it against. Night and day. Young. Blue fruit. Concentrated. WOTY worthy. (1402 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 4/11/2015 & rated 98 points: Tasted from a large tasting pour, and tasted twice.
Dark purple. Huge aromatic nose of spiced fruit. Vanilla, dark fruit, minerals, blueberry compote, the complex fruit flavors go on forever. Massive finish! Wow! WOTN for me. Deserves the accolades. I had given these bottles time before opening. Glad I have more. Probably even better if given more time to open up. (1228 views)
Tasted by bovinum on 3/17/2015 & rated 96 points: Decanted for 2.5 hours. Dense and rich with the blackberry fruit only really shining after 2 hours in the decanter. There is a melted creamy marshmallow component that is interwoven with the black cherry and blackberry fruit. Very good. (1760 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 3/6/2015 & rated 97 points: consistent with notes of 10/5/2014 (1562 views)
Tasted by slippytoad on 12/27/2014 & rated 93 points: Phenomenal drink, port like. Silk. Dark. (2166 views)
Tasted by carisua78 on 12/24/2014 & rated 94 points: Tasted blind with 09 Relentless. On the nose both have a similar aromas black berry, black cherry and black licorice. On the palate two very different wines...the 08 very muscular and rich with firm tannins. The 09 felt more approachable than the 08. I'm not planning to touch the other 08 bottles for a few years.

During the blind tasting I have to say I enjoyed more the 09 because it felt more approachable (although I was thinking it was the 08). Very two nice wines! I have to go back and check the % of Petite Sirah for both of them. That should be the key! (1922 views)
Tasted by Uncle John on 10/30/2014 & rated 90 points: Had this with 2 friends and it never quite came around. Not sure if this was an off bottle but it lacked the depth of previous bottles. (3106 views)
Tasted by pauljr1121 on 10/24/2014 & rated 97 points: Poured two 4oz pours into two glasses and then put rest in decanter. Stayed in cellar for about 1.5-2 hours. Upon initial sniff, huge blue and red fruit, mostly blueberry and black cherry, and finely integrated oak offered a beautiful touch of vanilla. It just continued to soar as time went on. Power with finesse and not a speck of heat. The final few ounces were the best. Just unreal. I would suggest a 3-4 hour decant and then enjoy. Outstanding!!! (2732 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 10/5/2014 & rated 97 points: consistent with prior notes...firing on all cylinders, could use a case more. (3076 views)
Tasted by Uncle John on 8/8/2014 & rated 93 points: Opened an hour before dinner but this needed another hour to fully open. Dark rich fruit with an expansive palate and 30 second finish. I would decant for at least an hour at this point. Went great with NY Sirloin on the BBQ with seared scallops and arugula salad. Happy man :-) (3236 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 7/26/2014 & rated 97 points: consistent with notes of 5/18/2013 (3356 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 7/23/2014 & rated 94 points: Wow. Full bodied, powerful Syrah blend with stunning flavors of black fruit, tobacco and roasted meats. Great structure and long finish. (2786 views)
Tasted by RickyT12 on 6/8/2014 & rated 90 points: Super sweet. Cherry jubilee lots of alcohol. Lots of mint. A little bitter. Nose black berry. chocolate cherry, really bitter chocolate. This flavor was swinging all over the place as the night went on. Went from very sweet to quite bitter. I am not a huge fan of this wine, but it has it moments. (3578 views)
Tasted by SonnyChiba on 6/5/2014 & rated 92 points: It was interesting to see the post just below as I was thinking the same thing. I have had this 4 times now in a relatively short time span and this was clearly the best showing. It has really come together and settling down. Still very rich and delicious, and best served with food. (2448 views)
Tasted by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on 6/5/2014 & rated 90 points: Popped and let sit in the bottle for one hour. Inky purple. Big nose, big flavor. Heat! Blackberry, mint, other berries. Glad we chose to drink this one last. (3057 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 4/24/2014 & rated 94 points: WOW! This is better than it was 6 months ago! (2894 views)

John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

2008 Shafer Relentless

maker's notes: The 2008 is like midnight in a glass. With abundant aromas and flavors of juicy purple fruit, smoked meat, spice, smoke, black plums and berry, it hugs the line between extract and elegance. In the mouth it's full and seamless from first taste through the long finish
