2010 DRC Tasting

Introduction

This was a retailer hosted event, where we tasted a 1.5 oz pour of each wine. All of the wines showed exceptionally well, I've been attending this event since the 2005 vintage and I can't recall a better tasting set of young DRC. All the wines were fresh and intense with middle weight concentration. The balance was impeccable with very seductive textures and expressive aromas. DRC hit it out of the park in 2010, but unfortunately the prices are up from 2009 quite a bit.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Corton Domaine Prince Florent de Merode

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Bright cherry nose showing some orange rind and spice notes. The palate shows sweet and sour fruit notes at one moment tart and acidic and then the next moment sweet and full. Overall there is a very interesting interplay of flavors, with medium weight concentration and a seamless texture. This is very DRC, as compared to last year when it showed as an adopted member of the family.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Similar to the Corton showing spicy cherry and orange rind notes, with the addition of a white pepper note. It displays a richer and more luxurious palate than the Corton, showing an impeccable texture and very deeply pitched flavors. This is a first rate Echezeaux.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Deeply pitched aromas, less bright fruit than the first 2 wines but with a beautiful spicy nose. The aroma here is earthier with some plum and white pepper notes. The palate displays a deep black-fruited flavor profile, more serious and brooding than the first 2 wines. The texture is silky with and almost saline like quality to the mouth feel.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

The RSV shows a very consistent nose with the previous wines, bright cherry fruit, orange rind and lovely spice. I detect some heat on the nose however, which detracts from the aroma in my book. Bright cherry flavors, full and ripe on the palate with a curious hole in the middle that then leads to a finish showing fine grained tannins that have the most grip of all the wines in the lineup.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

A more closed nose that is not revealing much and shows some reduction. There are dark cherry and plum aromas masked by the reduction at the moment, but you also get some of the earthiness and depth that was displayed by the GE. It has a really spicy palate with a tightly clenched core of red fruit. There was not a noticeable step up in quality from the last 3 wines.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Now we see a big step up as the LT shows a beautiful Asian spice box nose over a core of red fruit aromas. The nose here is really singing. There are deep, rich and perfectly balanced flavors on the palate that display a wonderful intensity without an ounce of heaviness. This is a wow wine and really quite special.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

Another wow nose, very spicy but dustier and then sweeter than the LT. Intense flavors wrapped in a lovely middleweight texture that is slightly more brooding, concentrated and deeper than the LT. Very tight with wonderful fine grained tannins and flavor intensity. The RC displays more of everything but all in balance.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Poured last after the reds. This has a tropical fruit note with some richness on the nose, with some banana notes. No sulphur or reduction, you would not confuse the Monty from DRC for a Coche or Leflaive white. Rich, ripe and showing lots of dry extract with some tartness on the palate, again with an oily tropical fruit feel to the texture. The fruit is balanced by a saline and mineral feel on the back end.
