Black fruited with hints of black olives on the nose. Well structured but showed some elegance. This was quite a bit more perfumed than the Serrette it was paired with but also had more rustic tannins. This got better and better as it sat in the glass. A really solid bottle of traditional Cornas. Great to try this now, but this needs 7-10 years. Excellent. 90+
This showed extremely youthfully (it is young, but this was almost like a barrel sample) and was completely outclassed by the Alain Verset. Slightly jammy black fruits with some warmth on the palate. This doesn't seem fully modern, but definitely doesn't taste super traditional, especially when paired beside the Verset. A bit simple for me. Good.
High toned nose, almost like a band-aid or chemical/hospital smell, with dark fruits underneath. The high toned note, with time, transformed into a strong note of mint. Fairly well structured with raw acidity. I'd put this in the 'tweener' camp: not fully modern, not fully traditional, but somewhere in the middle. This was better with food but compared with the 01 Clape, this seemed a bit simple. Very youthful and should get a good bit better with 5-7 years. Good. 87+
Okay, now we're in the zone. Salty and savory nose with lighter black fruits and quite a bit of elegance on the palate that's back by firm structure. Very long on the finish. A good time to check in on this but ultimately this needs a few more years. Excellent. 91+
At first the nose on the '97 stole the show but after 15-20min in the glass this '96 showed all the classic syrah notes: black olive tapenade, savory meats, iron and dark fruits...everything I want in a syrah. Beautiful and complex on the palate with well balanced acidity and tannins. This bottle showed more youthfully than the bottle I opened last year. Outstanding.
This came flying out of the gates with a classic Northern Rhone nose of black fruits and savory elements. The fruit profile on the palate was sweeter than the '96 and was a bit more refined and mature. A beautiful wine that's at peak now, but a notch or two below the fantastic '96. Excellent.
Beautiful nose. Classy and refined and almost a blend of the classic '96 with a bit of the sweetness from the '97. Sappy black fruits on the palate with excellent length. For the most part the structure has softened and moved into the background but there's still a touch of rusticity lingering around to remind you what you are drinking. Overall a bit richer than the '96 but definitely cut from the same cloth. Outstanding.
