Flight 1 - I. Warm ups (5 Notes)

  • 2008 Ceretto Langhe Arneis Blangé

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Deep golden yellow color. Initial aroma is of apple juice, followed by wet stone. The palate, though rich in texture, mirrors the bouquet with its apple juice notes. Perhaps too old? Revisiting this before it was unveiled, the apple juice qualities had softened, leaving pear and stone notes. Had no real guess here- you could have told me OTH Chardonnay or a Rhone varietal or just about anything else and I'd not have argued with you.

  • 2012 Domaine Bourillon Dorléans Vouvray Vieilles Vignes La Coulee d'Argent 85 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Deep color- looks older like the first wine. Aromas of white fruit and florals, with a wet stone quality as well. Here again, apple juice on the palate, though there's a spicy flavor that lingers through the finish; plenty of acid too. Guessed Italian variety.

  • 2002 Rubicon Estate Blancaneaux 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Lemongrass and citrus notes; has a sweet quality too, almost like Lemonheads candy, along with mineral and stone. Toasty, charred quality on the palate, followed by apple and orchard fruit with a butterscotch note on the finish. Guessed Bordeaux blend.

  • 2013 Loveblock Vintners Ltd Sauvignon Blanc Awatere Valley 88 Points

Pale color with notes of jalapeno and cat urine along with sour lime. Tangy acidity on the palate with lime and jalapeno flavors. Obviously Sauv Blanc, and I incorrectly guessed S. Africa.

  • 1986 Château Sociando-Mallet 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Soft garnet color. Red berry fruit with Wyler's bouillon cube undertones. The palate follows the bouquet; tired red fruit on the finish. The bouillon qualities soften and almost disappear, leaving some ripe, but tired, dark fruit. Guessed old Zin.
