Introduction

In attendance: Dick, Matt, Jon, Jill, Allan, Marlene, Paul. These wines saw minimal aeration; we watched them develop in the glass over time.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1999 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A bit of funk initially on the nose, which blew off after some time. Lots of tobacco, woody spices, and cassis grace the rich, gentle nose. The palate, forward and elegant, is less expressive than the nose. The mid palate is rich and leads to a pleasant graphite finish.

  • 2002 Château Pontet-Canet 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Excellent minerality reminiscent of rough-cut stones is almost stronger than the rich dark fruit aromas. The palate shows good fat and concentration, nice fruit, ripe tannins and a pleasing finish of more minerality. Fairly tight at this time.

  • 2001 Château Gruaud Larose 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

At first there was a fair amount of funk showing, but this blew off with some air. The nose is elegant, with subtle, smokey, focused minerality and nice fruit. This was a bit hollow on the mid-palate, but the forward, fresh-tasting fruit made for a pleasant drink.

  • 1999 Château d'Angludet 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

The interesting chocolaty oakiness of the wine was its most noteworthy characteristic. The nose and palate seemed a bit underpowered and dilute. Very understated, with a short finish.

  • 1997 Château Léoville Barton 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This showed a lot of funk, which did not entirely blow off with some air. The nose was pleasant, exhibiting rich, fresh cassis and hints of cedar. Very soft, sweet, and forward on the palate, some green notes, with a moderate, somewhat thin finish.
