It's a shame Cliff Lede increased the price of this wine from $50 to $60 for the 2006 vintage. This is not a very good wine. It has distinct caramel nose, and the palate is fat, soft and unfocused. Nothing seems to fall in line with this wine. I've recently seen this wine heavily discounted, and now I see why. The professional critics got it wrong with this one.
This is an excellent wine, and I wouldn't argue with anyone whose own preferences place this in the 90+ point range. This wine was unanimously preferred over the Cliff Lede 2006 at a dinner during which both bottles were opened. The John Anthony had focus and depth, which the Cliff Lede lacked.
