I attended the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux tasting in Chicago on and tasted 45 2003 Red Bordeaux and 7 2003 Sauternes. I tasted about 25 of the red Bordeaux and took about a 30 minute break to grab something to eat and rest in the hopes of refreshing my palate. I then tried another 20 red Bordeaux before moving on to the Sauternes after another short break. My impressions of the vintage is that it is not equal to the 2000 but a fine vintage with some impressive wines. Some estates made better wines in 2003 than in 2000 but they are the exception and not the rule. Certainly a vintage to buy if you have not already done so. Much less tannic and more approachable in my opinion than 2000. Many of the wines exhibited a sweetness among the fruit that was not present in the 2000's at this stage. The best wines showed good concentration and depth. An exceptional vintage overall for the red wines. Based upon the wines I tasted, it seemed to me that the Left Bank preformed better than the Right Bank. Most of my top scoring wines came from Pauillac and St. Julien. I was less impressed with the Sauternes and will post notes on the seperately.
