Introduction

My turn to bring the wines, everybody else tasted double blind.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Viña Cono Sur Cabernet Sauvignon 20 Barrels 90 Points

    Chile, Maipo Valley

Decanted for an hour. This was amazingly dark, almost black with a garnet tinged edge. The nose was very expressive with lots and lots of cassis and a hint of oak coming through, some even thought there was petrol in the aromas. On the palate also lots and lots of cassis, but in a good way, not a disjointed fruit bomb, but lots of fruit and good acidity to back it up, also nice smooth tannins. I bought this a couple of years ago and it has been in the cellar since. A very nice full-bodied Cab with lots of everything in nice proportions. Great stuff! 50+5+11+16+8=90

  • 2005 Château Senilhac 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Decanted for an hour. A really dark purpley red, almost black. The nose has cassis, but is not very expressive, also a hint of vanilla, nice. On the palate more of the same, subdued cassis, almost watery in the beginning, but picking up substance with airtime, lots of tannins. Perhaps this could get better with cellaring, but perhaps not, I tried to think about this as I tasted it, but my impression was that it probably won't get much better than this. 50+4+10+15+8=87

Closing

My intention was to bring a good Cab (the Cono Sur) and one that has gotten good reviews (the Senilhac). The latter is going for about 14€ in Finland and I was wondering whether I should get some for the cellar for the short term (2-3 years). But nah, I don't think it is worth getting more of it. The Cono Sur was really good, even though it was BIG, it was still in balance.
